  I agree with Bruteye...I would like to see stability in the program. I don't know much about Indorf, but if a Dalton grad is likely to stay longer then that is a good thing. What does he teach again? Does he have a family? Where do they live?
  I would disagree that hiring Doty would send players away. He done very well as defensive coordinator. Our defense is good and consistent over recent years with him there. The kids that complain about Doty complained about all the coaches at one time or another. And everyone complained about Ram, too. Yet you can't argue his record. I think Doty would do fine and is the most likely to stay put in Dalton a while.

  I've said it before and I'll say it again.....Doty is NOT head coach material. He is too much of a hot head, not a good quality for a head coach. It's like he has something to prove. He makes an a## out of himself all the time. You would be suprised on who said they wouldn't play if he gets the job.
  As far as our defense goes, anyone would have had success with the talent we have had on that side of the ball the past few years. Mike Berg was a far better defensive coach than Doty. We can't even get our pass coverage to work.
  The boys actually liked Ram.

  Mom,
  Ask your son about Doty. I know of many guys on the sidelines who'll tell you about Doty's cursing about players. That's not the type of person I want representing my Bulldogs.

  Hopefully a decision is made in a few weeks.....very interested to see what direction they go.

  Dalton does not at this time have a coach who does not curse. Excepting maybe the girls' sports. I would love to see us not have that type of person representing our school. Someone who believes that motivation comes from more than swearing and listening to nasty music to make kids angry enough to hit hard. That would be awesome. Would reduce the number of personal fouls and unsportmanlike conduct calls all around.
  I'm afraid though, that held to that criteria in this society we would have no applications at all. Big Stutz is our worst. Doty not so bad comparatively, even Berg swears sometimes....and you are telling me Ram doesn't have a temper and doesn't curse!!! Dream on, I've heard him from the stands. I'm not saying Doty is best for the job. I'm just saying if we are looking for someone who will stay long term, Doty probably would because he's local. Bleed, my son got a long fine with all his coaches.

  That's a hard trait to quantify. You almost have to go on what you've seen...and that would only impact current assistants. Unless those applicants from outside the program go in to the metting cursing...you have no way of knowing.

  There's a difference between cursing about something and at someone. Any coach ever calls my son a "piece of ****", I'll be across the fence and in his face in no time. There's no place for that on the sidelines, or in the classroom.

  I agree, that is poor coaching. Yet it is the currently common method coaches use to get someone angry enough to work harder and compete "better". I think if coaches knew that those boys lived and died by what is said about them, they would control themselves better. To a kid "piece of ****" comes across as Coach hates me and he'll never send me in again, I'm no good as a player. Consequently, we as parents need to teach our kids confidence in themselves by example. This is what I've had to do with my son. I would not go over the fence and get in the coaches face....that is not helpful to me, my son, the team or the coach. I tell my son it was a wrong thing to say, but he doesn't have to accept it as truth. I go to coach in private and share my thoughts. I cannot change that man, but I can teach my son how to look at the facts about his ability and not recieve a negative comment as truth. I have spoken to Mr. Beatty on this issue and I do hope it is on the minds of the selection committee. I don't want a "soft" coach, but I would like one whose mouth is clean. Bleed, I still say that if you think Doty is the only coach with the issue you described you are mistaken.

  The thing with Doty just isn't his swearing. Swearing happens in almost every sport, but the way he aims it at players has to stop. He has little mans syndrome, it's his entire attitude. He believes he is a football god. Coaching doesn't mean you have to be an idiot to motivate players.
  
  I'm sure there are better qualified coaches to coach our defense. Our pass coverage is horrible, we seem to always be in the wrong coverage. We hardly ever stunt or show different looks, not to mention blitz.
  In the weight room, he is a joke as well. Boys doing the same workout all year. There are some that varied and have had success.
  If you think I'm bashing Doty, oh well, speak to some of the dads of our players, you will get an earfull.
  
  As far as calling players a piece of @#$%.....go ahead with a son of mine. I've had enough of his "leadership", his position will be the last he will worry about.
  My high school head coach never swore, never! His assistants would, but not around Coach. The man was a true motivator!

  What makes this hire especially interesting to me is not who the new coach will be but who will replace him. Hear me out, following the logic that coaches use Dalton as a stepping stone, and the new coach isn't going to stay there as long as Ram did, are they also looking to bring on an assistant coach who isn't necessarily as loyal to the new head coach as some others might be, to groom him to continue the program that is being put into place? You find a guy you like that maybe doesn't have as much experience as you want, and let him work with the new coach until he decides to leave, and the coach that has been groomed takes over where they left off? Does that make sense to anyone but me?
  
  I guess I am just thinking of consistency that has been mentioned here. You had the same coach for 25+ years, you have to find someone who is going to continue the winning tradition of Dalton football for the next 25 years. Can you do that in today's coaching environment with just one coach or do you need to look one or two hires down the road?

  I think that's a good point. Still wondering why Phillips is hired with his background if they aren't thinking of using him at some point.

  Take this for what it is worth, but today I heard that the candidate from Perry has at least been offered the job. The source I heard this from was told directly by a varsity player on the team. Time will tell if it is true or not, but I wouldn't doubt it. Beatty and the principal both have ties to Perry, and Beatty seems to hire people who he worked with in the past or people from places where he worked in the past.

  Both Beatty and Case can go back there as far as I'm concerned.

  That is why the never even interviewed Indorf. They must of known who they wanted from the start.

  I spoke with one of the guys listed in the paper as one of the final eight and he said during his interview football was not even discussed. I find this very odd. He found out in the past day or so that he is no longer a candidate.

  bruteye - I think the way they are going about this is first, they sifted through the candidates resumes and selected the eight they thought were the best. They then had a round of interviews about teaching, to be followed by a round about coaching. Possibly this person you spoke to did not align with their teaching philosophy in some way.

  who was the coach with the state titles
