Should the Cavs make a trade?

Do It! Jamison would be nice!

Ferry has to make a move for next year as much as this year. He is going to have no big expiring contracts or free agent money for next year, so if he doesn't make a move now and they don't win a championship, he is stuck bringing much the same team back with no real way to improve it.

Loyalty to Z is nice, but he is the last best shot to bring in a difference maker for both the stretch run this year and beyond.

You never want to plan for next year during the current one, but Ferry has to be thinking about that. It becomes a tough sell on Lebron if they don't win a title this year, and have no assets/cao room to materially improve the team. Don't think Lebron wouldn't be looking at sitting on a massive trade chip like that 2 years in a row as a positive when figuring out what he is going to do.

You do what you can at this point to get Jamison. He will be here for the next 2 years, so it is not as if it is a total go for broke you're screwed if it doesn't work move. Plus, Lebron won't sign for any more than 3 years, so at least it will give him Andy, Mo, and the AJ as a core for that time.

You just have to think after standing pat and coming up short last year that this year you have to make a move. There will be just a sea of what ifs should they not win it all after this year, and to have a chance to have made a major addition each season and passed is just not going to cut it. You have to go down swinging when you have a chance to make a move.

We already are facing a situation for next season where we will have little to no cap space left after resigning LeBron, so if there is any chance for us to really get a solid player or two in a trade now, I definitely do it, and don't worry at all about our cap situation. Unless we trade guys like Gibson, Varejao, West, etc. for expiring deals, which isn't going to happen, we may have a few million dollars left to spend in free agency. As others said, we played the waiting game last year, when if we would have made a move, it would have definitely improved our chances of winning.

As far as what position to improve, I say it doesn't matter. I'd like a stretch 4, hell I'd like to get any 4 that can be relied on to score 10-15 points a night and give us quality rebounding. At the same time, LeBron has the size and strength to be put against most of the 4 players in the league, so if we got Rip Hamilton instead of a 4, I would be fine with that. I'm in that group that feels we don't NEED to make a move, but if you have the chance at improving overall talent, why wouldn't you?

If an opportunity comes a long for the Cavs to move some pieces, most likely Z, JJ and possibly a perimeter player for a guy like Jamison or West I don't see how Ferry can't make that move. That would fit a need of another midrange scorer either off the bench or in the starting five without doing major damage to the teams chemistry. The Cavs need another scorer to space the floor. A guy like Jamison or West would be perfect for that because they can create their own shots off the dribble.

Forget the quote "If it's not broke, don't fix it". Just because it's not broke doesn't mean you can't add improvements.

If the salary cap for next year goes down as expected, here is what the Cavs are looking at next season.

    Estimated 2010-11 Cap: $53,000,000

    Cavs Payroll 2010-11
    D. Gibson $4,088,500
    D. Green $457,588
    J. Hickson $1,429,200
    D. Jackson $736,420
    J. Moon $3,000,000
    A. Parker $2,644,231
    A. Varejao $6,363,636
    D. West $4,254,250
    M. Williams $8,860,000

    Total Salary: $31,833,825
    Cap Room: $21,166,175

Can go over the cap to resign:
    LeBron James
    Zydrunas Ilgauskas
    Shaquille O'Neal
    Leon Powe
    Jawad Williams

If LeBron agrees to come back, they would have room to sign a max player, as long as they sign that player first, then they can go over the cap to sign LeBron, Z, and Shaq if they want. This is of course if they don't add a guy with a deal that lasts past this season. They should keep this in mind and only add someone they know still has a few years left in them at a high level. Of course, if they know LeBron isn't coming back, then might as well sell out to try and get a title this year and the future be damned.

I think I founded the "Why the love affair with Hickson?" club. I didn't like the pick as soon as it was made. The guy was just so raw coming out (and still is) it's unreal.

I voted yes to a trade, but really it depends on who you can get. I like Powe, but who knows how strong he'll be able to come back this year. I still think this team could use an upgrade at the 4, and I wouldn't mind a guard either because of the Delonte situation.

Wouldn't it be interesting if LeBron (...and other franchise players) said "heck I already have a ton of money and I make alot in endorsements. You know what? I could sign for a few million, and then that would allow us to make a move for somebody else!"

Too bad us regular joes aren't in their shoes. If I was Dwayne Wade (heck or Lebron)I'd use this strategy (take less) and sign with the Magic. Tell me that team wouldn't win a title? And best of all, no state income tax...

That's not how it works. There will be a cap hold for all of our free agents against the cap until they are either resigned or renounced, at which point you lose their bird rights.

Here is the explanation from cbafaq.com all about the collective bargaining agreement.

    31. Why do free agents continue to count against a team's cap?

It closes another loophole. Teams otherwise would be able to sign other teams' free agents using their cap room, and then turn their attention to their own free agents using the Bird exceptions. This rule restricts their ability to do that. It doesn't close this loophole completely -- for example, in 2005 Michael Redd's free agent amount was $6 million, even though the Bucks intended to re-sign him for the maximum salary. By waiting to sign Redd last, the Bucks were able to take advantage of the difference by signing Bobby Simmons. Had they signed Redd first, they would have had no cap room to sign Simmons.
Basically the Cavs have zero cap room for next year as the cap hold for Lebron alone will eat up most of the available money.

That is why it is vital to make a trade right now, as it is the last shot they have to improve the team until 2 seasons from now as there is no Ben Wallace, Z or Wally next year that could bring back a high dollar player.

    Iggy nailed it.
  • h2thaizzo
Exactly what Iggy said. Here is the problem with doing nothing. If Shaq and Z both decide to hang up the shoes, we have AV as our lone big playing around 7', we have no cap room to sign anyone else noteworthy, and have to again rely on only the draft and our MLE and LLE offers to get help. Now I think Shaq will be back for at least one more year, but we still need bodies. If we can move some players and get a star, then do it.

if you can get jamison for z and jj i would do it right now.they have no cap space next year.jamison would be a great fit here.you have to get something for z you cannot stand pat like last year.

Trade for Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden.....those guys led us to the finals.

    A couple interesting pieces.

-The Wizards want Z and JJ + 1st round for Jamison. I would do this trade as long as Z is bought out. Our 1st pick is going suck anyways and we can always buy into the 1st round with Danny "Dollar's" Gilbert as the owner. But I bet we could either knock off JJ or the 1st rounder as the deadline gets closer and the Wizards are forced to make a move.

-Bosh/Amar'e on the blocks??? Amar'e I can see getting traded as PHO isn't going anywhere and he doesn't want to be on a rebuilding team. Bosh won't get traded until the offseason via S/T.

-Pacer's Troy Murphy is still on the Cavaliers radar.

    Bosh/Amar'e on the blocks???
No, and if they were there are teams that could give back alot more than JJ and an expiring contract. Neither of those teams are in contract dump mode, and we have very little by the way of talent to give back to them.

Did I say Cleveland should trade for either of them?

Nope, its a part of the article. Amar'e will definitely be on the blocks once again but Bosh won't be leaving TOR until the offseason. The Raptors could at least win a series in the playoffs imo.

Doesn't work that way. Bron's number stays on there unless they denounce his rights. They can't go get Chris Bosh then use their Bird to sign Bron. The only way they can get a second member of this class is to trade for him now.

I don't think a playoff caliber Phoenix Suns team is going to put Amar'e on the block. I just don't see it happening. Of course, I could be wrong.

However, get that Antwan Jamison deal DONE. Yesterday.

Since I was incorrect in my understanding of the rules, the Cavs definitely need to make a move, provided they know Z will be bought out.

Fuck this Z only gets traded if he is gonna get bought out bullshit. I agree with Michael Reghi Cleveland needs a 2nd scorer because Mo Williams disappears in big games. Z has a sexy contract get rid of him and if you get him back you get him back if not then oh well its about winning a championship NOW. There is no guarantee Lebron is back next year and if hes not you aren't sniffing an NBA championship anytime soon.

According to B.W. New blog, the arizona republic says the cavs and suns are having talks about Amare. He goes on to say it'd most likely be Z, JJ, and maybe picks. The suns would almost definetly buy out z and save themselves around 10 mil. He also says Z has already been paid about 75% of his contract for the year, it was set up that way, so the suns wouldn't need big money to buy Z out.

Earlier in this thread I wondered if the suns would look to trade Amare. I'd love this deal!!

Agreed, if its there, take it, take it now!
  • hoops23
Yeah, I saw that too.. I know the Cavs were looking at both Amar'e and Shaq last season, but the Suns were content with staying pat to see how the team performed after the ASB..

If Amar'e is there, that's basically our big FA for next season. You DO IT in a heart beat.. In fact, the Cavs better do it soon if it's actually out there. The quicker you get this done, the quicker Z gets back to us.. You're not going to ind a better deal than STAT.
  • Midstate01
What's Amare's game like around the elbows? Does he consistently hit that shot? He's not really the stretch 4 that could make us unbeatable IMO, but he's young, super athletic, and moves well withoutthe ball. My other question, which I sent to windy is: if this deal were to happen and then we getZ back.. How are all the minutes divided?? Of course Amare would take jj's minutes but he would play much more then jj does and Andy has to be on the floor some.
  • hoops23
Midstate, Amar'e has a pretty consistent midrange game. Not only that, but he knows how to finish around the basket. Could you imagine him in the pick & roll instead of "no hands" Hickson?

Don't get me wrong, JJ Hickson has potential, and obviously other teams see that, but as of now, we need to get the pieces to win a title this year. Amar'e is only 27 himself..

As far as minutes, I'm guessing in the playoffs it'll be something like..

you'd have Shaq playing around 25 mins.. Andy playing around 14-20 mins.. Powe getting around 10 or so.. Amar'e getting starting mins (34-40) and Z would probably get around 8-10 minutes depending on match up..
