Dangerous for the league. Because he feels teams will start tanking a lot more in order to get the first pick.like_that;1857086 wrote:Dangerous in what sense? Also, that team had many chances to win more than 1 game and they completely blew it. There was no tanking on purpose to lose those games if anyone watched them. -
BR1986FBThere was a lot of talk, especially here in Cleveland, during the season as to whether the Browns were doing a tank job. Many people thought they were. Regardless of what people want to call it, this roster purge was a necessity. The team kept bringing in overpriced free agents (guys like Bowe, Whitner, previously McGinest, etc) who were looking to cash in on their last contract but brought no real value to the table. That's why I had no issue with them not re-signing Alex Mack. They needed to clean the slate to start over, building from the ground up. In fact, this should've been done years ago. If they have any desire to build a long-term winning culture, they had to blow it up.

sleeperI don't think tanking is a big deal in the NFL. In basketball, one player can really turn around a franchise especially if it's a LBJ type where it's worth blowing an entire season to get them.
In football, even sure fire talent like Luck isn't worth blowing a season. The Colts are a better team with him but he didn't do anything to impact the league's competitive balance or integrity.
In other words, the article is pure trash. -

Yeah, I think Polian was a great GM, but he is full of shit. Most of the consistently successful teams in the NFL don't need top 5 picks for consecutive years to compete.sleeper;1857097 wrote:I don't think tanking is a big deal in the NFL. BR1986FBNice write up on Gregg Williams. Hope his intensity rubs off on the defense.

BR1986FBAnd now Garrett gets injured (foot) and limps off the field. Will have multiple tests today for what some are saying could be serious.

I'm concerned it's serious. He injured it yesterday late and I feel like if it were a sprain they would have already said it. I'm thinking he's getting 2nd opinions now for how severe the injury is. Hoping I'm wrong though.BR1986FB;1859156 wrote:And now Garrett gets injured (foot) and limps off the field. Will have multiple tests today for what some are saying could be serious. -

Different situations (one was a free agent, one a top draft pick) but I'm having LeCharles Bentley flashbacks. Crossing my fingers hoping for the best.Commander of Awesome;1859244 wrote:I'm concerned it's serious. Commander of AwesomeGreen Beckman was released by the Eagles. I recall him having his way with Haden couple yrs back, bent him over a barrel and showed him the 50 states. Wouldn't mind kicking the tires on him, if nothing else a RZ threat.

I agree, but also it really isn't saying much that he owned average joe.Commander of Awesome;1860929 wrote:Green Beckman was released by the Eagles. BR1986FBLove me some Tribe but, with the Cavs season over, I'm itching for the start of training camp.
92.3 was doing an interesting mock draft this morning. The draft involved taking any player (regardless of position) OR head coach for a one year run. It was basically a "quarterback is the most important player on the field, STFU about 'bolstering the trenches'' or 'building up the defense" exercise as they constantly have the "build up the defense/O-Line" callers calling in, wanting to put off the QB decision, year in and year out.
1. Brady
2. Rodgers
3. Carr
4. Luck
5. Belichick
And that's where I had to get out of the car. No defensive players in that (small) group) and the guy who took Brady paired him with Belichick at 5. -

Find a great QB or the greatest coach in NFL history.BR1986FB;1860949 wrote:Love me some Tribe but, with the Cavs season over, I'm itching for the start of training camp.

Wow they found the blueprint! It's a copy ca league so I expect other teams to follow suit. -

Guess the point was that you didn't see any JJ Watt's or Joe Thomas' on that list.like_that;1860954 wrote:Find a great QB or the greatest coach in NFL history.

You start with the QB and build from there, not vice versa. Belichick was only selected because the same guy who had Brady admitted that was the only reason he took him. The consensus was the coach wasn't that important if you have a "Lebron James" at QB. Even Mike Pettine won with decent QB play from Hoyer. -

I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out you need a QB to contend in today's NFL.BR1986FB;1860955 wrote:Guess the point was that you didn't see any JJ Watt's or Joe Thomas' on that list.

Nobody will argue that any other position is more important. -

You'd be surprised some of these morons here in Cleveland who think they should just build up the trenches and bolster the defense, waiting for that QB to come along. The belief of the mix of posters on here (Ohiochatter) has a firmer grip on reality then the stuck in the 80's/Dawg Pound Defense Average Joe here in NE Ohio.like_that;1860956 wrote:I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out you need a QB to contend in today's NFL.

Again, it's sample size, and doesn't account for all of the masses, but I'd bet 9 out of 10 of these schmucks that call in to these radio shows don't think QB is the key. They think the Browns can win with ground & pound, and defense. -
Commander of Awesome
Its definitely possible to win a SB with a great line/running games and dominating Def. See 2002 TB, Ravens, Broncos, Seahawks as examples of SB winners with that formula. However it's difficult to sustain greatness that way, you have a very narrow margin for error.BR1986FB;1860957 wrote:You'd be surprised some of these morons here in Cleveland who think they should just build up the trenches and bolster the defense, waiting for that QB to come along. I think bolstering the line/trenches/etc is important too, but if you think that's going to overcome a shitty QB you are a moron. I don't see an issue though building that way until you find a QB that you believe can be a starter. When you draft a QB just to get a QB, you have a situation where Weeden is your starting QB with 0 years of experience at 29 years old. The 2014 draft is there the Browns really fucked up (Manziel draft). Even though Gordon turned out to be a fucking idiot I think we all felt the browns were trending in a positive direction after developing some promising players and trading T-rich for a first round pick. Imagine if they draft Mack and Carr/Bridgewater that draft.BR1986FB;1860957 wrote:You'd be surprised some of these morons here in Cleveland who think they should just build up the trenches and bolster the defense, waiting for that QB to come along.
