Great talk. Figured if I were being an ass, I'd be implying he isn't coaching because of health reasons, but I wasnt. If you want to use his health as an excuse for the reason he isn't coaxhing, then it further solidifies my point that he isn't the retread you want if you had to pick one.

Yeah...you started it. I mentioned (along with two other posters) the prospects of George Karl coaching the Cavs, then you come on, call us fanboys and then act as if you have this obvious info of why he's not coaching.

I don't know shit about his health or what he's doing, but I figured since two other usually up to the info posters mentioned him that he must not be in terrible health as he has been numerous times over the past 12 years. Why on earth would anyone want someone that wasn't currently coaching because of his health?

There are few NBA coaches that I think a good deal of....Karl is def one of them, but I'm not savvy of his current health or why he's not coaching.

Your first paragraph is pick in a nutshell

He's a pompous ass who has this newfound confidence because he fucking graduated college.

I was called a "butthurt little bitch" when I wasn't even involved in the discussion because I am not a fan of retread coaches, but I definitely started it.

As much as I agree with you guys on Pick....I agree with him on Karl, vastly overrated as a coach. I want no part of him, at all.

So I get included because I shared a coaching opinion with him?

I didn't include you in anything. You assumed I did. You're usually good for decent discussion so I wouldn't go out of my way to call you out.

In 25 seasons wit these NBA cities (not what you call powerhouses) Cleveland, Golden Stste, Seattle, Milwaukee and Denver.....for those franchises he's made the playoffs in 22 of 25 seasons and has a .600 winning %

That alone should keep him from being "vastly" overrated....unless people think he is the greatest coach of all-time, by a lot.

I get not wanting him....but vastly overrated?
  • Lovejoy1984
Vastly overrated may have been a stretch, but overrated nonetheless.

14 out of the 22 times in the playoffs they were one and done. And more often than not, they were the higher seed. He's a great regular season coach, but comes up short when it comes to the playoffs.

And you're right, the cities haven't been large, but he's coached quite a few All Time greats

Payton, Kemp, Anthony, AI, Billups, Ray Allen, Michael Redd....etc. If I was starting a team, or a young team with no real aspirations, definitely would welcome him, but as a team with serious title aspirations, Karl isn't the guy.
  • Laley23
Coaches who won a title with 2nd team or later:

    Chuck Daly
    Alex Hannum
    Rick Carlisle
    Larry Brown
    Jack Ramsay
    Lenny Wilkins
    Doc Rivers

Im sure I am missing some as well. George Karl would have at a title if not for Micheal Jordan...now he would be coaching his own MJ. I mean, he took Carmelo to 50+ wins FIVE times (not counting a 32-8 stretch when he took over mid-season...that would make SIX fucking times). He led Seattle, who did have real talent in Gary Payton and Sean Kemp, to 50+ wins in ever season he coached there and 60+ THREE times.

There isnt much there to suggest he wouldnt/couldnt win a title with Cleveland. Not wanting him is fine, but Id love to hear you would want instead, and in no way would it be a BAD hire.

Yeah...I get that and also respect the championship need/desire. I'm on that same page but I simply don't feel there are any take this team to win a championship guys out there, but feel Karl could at least bring a little respect and get them playing (if for just the rest of this year)....I just have zero trust in Blatt and feel Karl would be a decisive upgrade (even though not the answer for what we all want)....just looking to get in the right direction for a title run (and win)

They are like watching a guy who was swimming ok but them someone tied a concrete block around him and he's barely still treading....need someone to cut the damn rope

I'd stay with David Blatt. Team has 9 new players, and only been half a season, especially with now having 3 new players picked up in the last 2 weeks, that will be in the post season rotation.

Funny you bring up the Sonics.....He won 63 games, and lost in the first round. Next season he won 57, and you guessed it, lost in the first round. He just doesn't strike me as a championship quality coach. He's a less successful Don Nelson. Great coach, but not a championship level coach, and that's ok, if you're not a team built to win championships.

If a move is made, it needs to be in the offseason, and at that point you'd want to look at a Mark Jackson, Tyron Lue, Ettore Messina, Adrian Griffin type. Someone who's coached in the NBA, either as a head coach, or assistant coach.

I would agree with this, just don't see him being the coach that would lead all the way.

So Tristan Thompson turned down a 4year, $52 million contract extension with Cleveland. Huuuuh?

I got a Bleacher Report notification on this today and was thinking the same thing CoA said. Is that where you heard it? They usually suck worse than ESPN does.

I saw it on NBC sports and cbs sports. It said in there that it happened before the October 31 deadline so I knew it wasn't "new" but I thought it hasn't been released until now. Guess not haha

Yeah, this was news after the Bulls game.

I think it's being mentioned again to add to the mountain of "IT'S ALL CRASHING DOWN AROUND YOU CLEVELAND!!!!!" Cavs-related news that's been run with recently.

I just wanted to note that in the same article George Karl was mentioned as another candidate that might work in Cleveland. lol
