Howard was for awhile (top 10 player) and Oden was even better on offense than him and as much of a defensive stopper. So the potential was there, but I agree that it's a bit farfetched to say for sure he would have been. Coaching goes a long way in how good a big man is (not only for development but also for implementation), and obviously injuries are a factor.SportsAndLady;1627719 wrote:Come on, top 10 player? That's absurd. There isn't a center in the top 10 in the NBA, Oden would be one of them? Come on.
Also I don't agree with that article you posted...not sure that will turn out to be a good signing for Miami.
When he was healthy for 21 games in 2009-2010, he put up 17, 13 and 3.4 blocks per 36 minutes. That's pretty fantastic for someone who had spent the last few years overcoming a major injury. -

I think Oden, barring injuries, would absolutely be a top 10 player. I hate to use college as an example, but he pretty much ran train on Noah(NBA DPOY) and Horford in the Florida championship game with one hand. It's a shame he has crap knees.SportsAndLady;1627719 wrote:Come on, top 10 player? That's absurd. There isn't a center in the top 10 in the NBA, Oden would be one of them? Come on.

Did you watch him at all during the entire season? The guy(and Conley) took that team to the NCAA Finals. And like someone else said, his numbers were pretty solid for Portland in the few games he did play.SportsAndLady;1627778 wrote:One great college game = top 10 nba player projection

Lots of players take their teams far in the NCAA tournament. Doesn't automatically make them an nba superstar lol come on.sleeper;1627782 wrote:Did you watch him at all during the entire season? Not good considering injuries are his biggest concern.Automatik;1627803 wrote:Embiid injures foot, maybe broken?

Are you arguing his NBA projection? I'm pretty sure that's the one thing about Oden that is inarguable. He was seen as a game-altering center. Definitely projected to be a top 10 active player during his career if healthy.SportsAndLady;1627778 wrote:One great college game = top 10 nba player projection
Got it.
Why are we even having this argument? -

Im arguing how high that projection is. He was definitely a sure fire good nba player at the very least without the injuries. But top 10 player? Elite player? Superstar? I can't say that's a sure fire thing.lhslep134;1627819 wrote:Are you arguing his NBA projection? I'm pretty sure that's the one thing about Oden that is inarguable.
But then again I am very anti-center in today's NBA so that probably has a lot to do with my projection of him. -

It does when you are 7' with an offensive game.SportsAndLady;1627811 wrote:Lots of players take their teams far in the NCAA tournament. Doesn't automatically make them an nba superstar lol come on. -

Very anti-center? Check out how the Spurs with a much better post game just dismantled the Heat in 5 games. Good centers with an offensive game are hard to come by. Sure you can always find a 7' like Dwight who can block some shots and get rebounds, but to find a guy like Tim Duncan or Shaq is game changing.SportsAndLady;1627823 wrote:Im arguing how high that projection is. What I meant by that is there are so very few good centers in the league. Obviously if you can find a great one, that's awesome (which is why I want embiid).sleeper;1627826 wrote:Very anti-center? derek bomarI want no part of Oden 2.0.
-
Pick6The only relevance Greg Oden has to this thread is that the guy people want to draft has a 70% chance of being him. Now stfu and get in topic.

I'm 99.9% sure your judgment is clouded by what has happened since. I think S&L from 2007 before the draft would call 2014 S&L a retard for saying Oden isn't a potential top 10 player if healthy lolSportsAndLady;1627823 wrote:Im arguing how high that projection is. And the Grizzlies with Gasol (look at their numbers before and after his injury this season and try and tell me centers aren't important) and the Bulls with Noah. Hell, even the Bobcats made the playoffs behind Big Al this year. -
Laley23Pacers with Hibbert not being useless last 2 years and into this year were a threat for a title.

I'm not saying he isn't a potential top 10 player I'm just saying I don't believe he would have been.lhslep134;1627844 wrote:I'm 99.9% sure your judgment is clouded by what has happened since. That's what happens when you have an opinion that is against the grain lol, no matter how moot the argument is. -

Well I will say that if any injury isn't gonna stop me from Embiid, it's a foot one because of how Cleveland has been able to salvage them (think big Z). But I am starting to become concerned by how many he's had already and that's without playing basketball for a while, which means I have no idea if it's a fluke or not.
