I don't know how to feel about it. On the one hand, it clearly indicates a lack of focus, which is a bad trait for a quarterback to have. On the other hand, he's putting in the work during the week and partying on the weekends. In fact, I would be willing to bet there's a few other Browns who party just as hard but don't have the constant scrutiny or attention JFF has.

I guess I'm truly indifferent towards it until we can see it having an effect on the field, or we hear that it's affecting his growth as a young QB. Until then, as far as I'm concerned, it is what it is.

My biggest concern isn't necessarily with him specifically, but the fact that many other uber-talented athletes have ruined their careers by following a similar path. Very few have maintained a similar lifestyle without it affecting their on-field performance. That is where my concern stems from. Could Johnny be an exception to the rule? Absolutely, but past experiences tell us that it is highly unlikely if he continues down a similar path.

There have been hundreds of pro athletes that were stars that drank and partied. Many in the HOF. Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Bobby Lane, Joe Nameth to name a few.

Since when have I claimed to know everything?
However, at this point in his career, Wilson has a significant advantage in discipline, leadership, and decision-making skills.
Based on what exactly? If you want a puritan playing quarterback, then draft Mother Theresa and hope her panties don't get too bunched up. No...you are a closet Manzielphobe...caught up in the Ron Jaworski school of thought that only traditionalists can succeed in anything...not just football.

Like I said to you above....get over it and enjoy the ride. Ray Farmer lucked out in that Manziel wasn't picked by someone else. Finally, this team has a quarterback that they can win with.

Based on him starting an entire season, leading the team to the playoffs and winning the superbowl? I mean shit lol.

Concerns on your rookie hotshot QB who hasnt even took a live snap in the NFL partying too much seem pretty legitimate. From what I read he never knocked Manziels talent or potential, just questioned his seriousness and work ethic which honestly most people do question, not just Jaws and Knoitall. For as anti Manziel that you claim him to be, he could as easily say that you're obsessively pro-Manziel

I think it's common knowledge that Manziel has a great work ethic.

    Work hard play hard.

???? He's worth keeping around just for the laughs alone. Anytime you see a Footwedge post, you just know you're going to be doing a facepalm by the end of it.

    Work hard play hard.

I'd like to know how this is common knowledge as well. He's our QB, so I want/need him to succeed, but let's not start throwing plaudits around just for the hell of it.

No one has ever question his work ethic. It was a huge trait for him at A&M. People always raved about the preparation he put in.

I would think that as a millionaire professional qb you should be expected to have a great work ethic. No need to laud over it.

You are stupid. plenty of "millionaire qbs" have had terrible work ethics. it's a huge plus that manziel has that type of preparation.

and those qbs with a terrible work ethic find themselves without a starting job in no time, fuckhead

Well yeah, there kind of is. It's an explanation why Pettine is okay with Manziel partying on the weekend, because he's working his ass off during the week.

    That's incidental.

"good work ethic" is a vague descriptor thrown around as if it shouldn't be expected from professional athletes. Man, JFF really showed his work ethic during organized team activities......at least wait until the season starts before talking about his preparation.

And yet it's thrown around all the time, so what does that say about whatever point you're trying to make?
  • Dr. KnOiTaLL
Wowzers, didn't expect all the conversation stemming from my post haha. Anyways, Johnny has obviously put in some work to get to this point. The original comment was made between JFF and Russell Wilson though. Preparation is more than what is done on the field though. Considering the fact that his body is his weapon, I wish he would take better care of it on the weekends, but whatever. Like I said before, I want the kid to succeed. I'm tired of the QB carousel just like everyone else. I was neither for nor against the pick. I just want someone to stick at the position for once, and I was hoping it would be him now that we have him. I just don't like his off-field activities as I feel like they are more of a distraction than anything, and the kid hasn't even played a down yet.

Not accurate. It has been questioned.

Not accurate. It has been questioned. In any event, the amount of work at the NFL level is night and day different. Will be put in the work that allows him to be the best player he can be? To be determined.

never by his teammates or coaches. Anyone else can GFT on the subject cause I don't care what they believe. If his college coaches and teammates say he was the best leader and hardest worker, and this far Pettine has said the same types of things, good enough for me.

Right. It's been questioned by other teams pre-draft and maybe some analysts, but not by anyone who has actually worked with the kid. But as QCB said, the work ethic required to succeed at quarterback in the NFL is on a whole other plane.
  • DeyDurkie5
Mel kiper said he doesn't have the work ethic, it's been questioned guys

His work ethic obviously HAS been questioned, but more so by scouts and NFL people than his teammates and coaches in college.

"According to trusted sources, the Texans are initially leaning towards taking either Blake Bortles or Johnny Manziel with the top pick. Although Manziel would obviously be the choice of owner Bob McNair, O'Brien is not sold that Manziel possesses the work ethic and intangibles necessary to be the face of a franchise," wrote Lande, a former Rams and Browns scout.

Has an avg. work ethic, came to 4 of 32 summer '13 workouts, and quit going to in-season workouts late in '12. Doesn't study the game, said to know about 60% of the offense in '12, never watches film; one source said only time he watched film during '12 was before ALUN.
