They have been shedding cash. I know they have to resign Scherzer, but it feels like there is another shoe to drop as they seem to be lining something up.HitsRus;1546828 wrote:Tigers trading Fister.....
One thing you can say about Dombrowski is that he never stands pat. -

Correct. About to sign Joe NathanIggyPride00;1546841 wrote:They have been shedding cash. I know they have to resign Scherzer, but it feels like there is another shoe to drop as they seem to be lining something up. -
Classyposter58Haha Ellsbury to the Yankees! Good lord he will be hated

SportsAndLady7 year deal? That's horrible for the Yankees

He's got an option for an 8th year, which would be 169M over 8 years. -

$22 million a year for Ellsbury?....sheesh:RpS_blink:7 year deal? That's horrible for the Yankees
I wonder how that will effect the attempt to sign Cano? -

Still one of the worst deals ever (for an organization). -
se-alumChoo's gotta be pretty happy after that Ellsbury deal. Put's him in the range for a long term deal worth probably 16-17 a year.
-
Azubuike24Beltran getting 3yr/48M (reportedly) too. Choo is going to break bank.

Classyposter58Tigers officially sign Joe Nathan to a 2 year deal and an offer to Choo coming soon

Azubuike24In-terms of value, absolutely. It's bad because every year, they have to be reminded of their mistake. It's like having to write a check to your ex-wife for 30+ years of like a few hundred a month instead of just having her take half up front and GTFO for life.

Ironman92.....but fucking genius on Bonilla's end.

Just like Griffey Jr..he is getting paid for a long time as well by the reds, although that was no hwere near the bomb that BB was! -
IggyPride00Seattle is rumored to be set to offer Cano a deal of 9 years/$225 Million.
I know he is a good player, but is $25 million really the price tag now for a .300 hitter with 25 Homers and 100 RBI's?
Not to mention the fact that I have yet to see a positional player in the post PED era that is worth anywhere near $25 million a season from about age 36 on.
In this case Seattle would be signing up for 4 such seasons.
Why do clubs keep on giving these 9-10 year deals to guys on the other side of 30 when none of them are ending well? -
HitsRus^^^...and why do they bid against themselves???? Like there are a dozen clubs lining up to dump $180 million+ on him. SMFH.

The Yankees have reportedly drawn a hardline at 7/$175 for pretty much that reason.HitsRus;1548612 wrote:^^^...and why do they bid against themselves???? Like there are a dozen clubs lining up to dump $180 million+ on him. SMFH.
I don't think they thought anyone was really going to pay him more than that, and seem content to let him go if someone does.
Quite frankly it is one of the first times I can remember a team refusing to bid against themselves. They gave him what they thought was a good offer and let it at that. Cano's team didn't believe them, and has reportedly been extremely frustrated at their refusal to come off that number. He doesn't want to go to Seattle, but it looks like he is going to have to. -
gorocks99Cano, Mariners agree on 10-year, $240 million deal. Holy shit, bunch of fucking idiots out there.

thavoiceWow.
Guess the argument of do you want to win or want to cash in is out the window.
Too much money...but just like when the stRangers signed ARod to that first deal, they knew they were going to have to overpay big time to sway him -
RotinajTerrible deal.

They do realize they are going to be paying a 40 year old Robinson Cano $24 million don't they?
Jay-Z's client base is about to explode. -
IggyPride00I also have to wonder why if you're the Mariners you offer the guy an extra $65 million over his next best offer.
It has been reported for a while the Yankees weren't going to go over $175 million. If you're Seattle, why not top out at say $200 million or so knowing there was no one else in play anywhere near that number?
If Robby Cano can get 10/240 at age 31, what in the world does Mike Trout get when he hits the market in 2017 at age 26?
The way things are going Trout should blow well past $350 million on probably a 12-13 year deal. I am now convinced some team is dumb enough to do that kind of deal. -

The Los Angeles Dodgers offered star pitcher Clayton Kershaw a “lifetime contract” worth about $300 million earlier this season, ESPN’s Buster Olney is reporting.
The two sides did not finish negotiations because Kershaw was uncertain about committing to such an “encompassing” deal and about having contract talks during the season, but talks progressed enough that a deal could be finalized this winter, according to the report.
Kershaw, 25, who has led MLB in ERA in each of the past three seasons, is eligible for free agency after the 2015 season. He made $11 million in 2013 during the second year of a two-year, $19-million deal, and is entering his final year of arbitration.
Um. Someone offers me 300 million dollars you sign that SOB immediately...in blood if there are no pens around! -
IggyPride00Signing a pitcher who throws only once every 5 days to a 10 year $300 million+ deal is insane.
How many pitchers really ever go 10 years without major arm trouble at some point along the line anymore?
At least with a position player they are on the field every day.
$30 million or so a year with a starting pitcher it becomes almost $1 million a start for about 7 innings. Kershaw is a stud, but is the guy really worth $142,000 or so an inning?
It feels like at some point we are going to see a course correction, but it never happens. The Mariners now have $49 million tied up in just 2 guys each year. Unless they are planning a payroll explosion how do you field a competitive team that way?
