DOUBLE the value.Heretic;1597460 wrote:So, Cabrera is now more valuable than the entire city of Detroit? -
IggyPride00Tigers owner Ilitch is reportedly detested by most other teams owners because he is willing to operate the team at a loss seemingly forever.
My first thought on the Cabrera deal was that they should have waited if they were going to overpay.
Then I thought about it today, and what they did is smart.
If Cabrera has another 2 huge seasons, then he would have probably been in line for the Pujols type deal which was 10 years for roughly the same money but they at least avoid those 2 extra years at the end where he would have been even less worth it yet still making almost $30 million.
Not to mention there is no guarantee that another big market team wouldn't have broken well past $300 million. The precedent is there for a 32 year old signing the 10 year deal. No matter how poorly they go, owners still seem to give them out.
If the team's owner is fine with running the team at a loss then a deal like this doesn't really matter. It only completely cripples a team if you're like the Dolan's and need to make X amount of money off the team because you aren't lighting the world on fire in your other businesses.
The Tigers are a play toy for a rich person, which is exactly what a professional sports team should be. You are in the wrong business if you need it to be your primary income generating asset. -

Isnt a very smart, or responsible, contract.IggyPride00;1597522 wrote:Tigers owner Ilitch is reportedly detested by most other teams owners because he is willing to operate the team at a loss seemingly forever.

A little similiar to the Votto deal in that he had 2 years remaining, but JV is younger.
They should have waited another season, and then put forth a 4-5 year deal with a shit ton of $$.
Why do teams, especially to a 30 yr old with two years remaining, feel the need to offer a 10 year deal? I dont know, maybe they tried it, but what about offering 4 years at 120 mil? STill gets the buzz of 30 mill a year, but without the long term ramifications of paying him on the downward decline?
FUcking stupid, as they arent bidding against anyone! I guess I could see in the Pujols deal as he was a free agent and have to try out outbid teams.... -
SportsAndLadyYep, Cabrera would have signed a 5 year contract instead of a 10 year 300 million dollar contract. Everyone listen to thavoice he's got all the answers.

I was just simply stating, wondering why would a team sign a guy to that sort of contract?
We know it is simply egos on the agent and players part, and hell, maybe even the owner as well.
To satisfy those ego's maybe a firm 120 million over 4 years would give them that boner they want in making 30 million a year.
I imagine they probably tried it, but geesh. I guess the owners figure in 7-10 years that the money they are giving a guy like him wont be that big of a deal
You dont think his agent would ultimately sign a 4/5 year deal for 30m per if they stuck to it knowing he is still under contract for 2 more? -
IggyPride00Trout signed a 6/$144 extension today that covers his 3 arbitration years as well as his first 3 free agent years.
Angels getting a massive bargain to be getting his absolute prime seasons for only 24 million a year those first 3 years of free agency he would have had.
At the same time I see why Trout signed the deal. He puts $144 million in the bank which provides him security, and will also have the chance to be a free agent at 29 where he seemingly could land 10/$300+ million contract if he keeps along the same trajectory he has shown.
Angels were smart to do this because while they are likely paying double what they would had he gone through the arbitration process, there is not a chance they would have gotten his age 26-28 seasons for that $24 million if they didn't do this deal. -

That is a pretty good deal for both sides. Trout gets his $$$, and alot of it, well before they have to pay him a ton, and LAA gets him for 3 of his FA years before his agent ultimately will command over 30mil/season.IggyPride00;1597945 wrote:Trout signed a 6/$144 extension today that covers his 3 arbitration years as well as his first 3 free agent years.

This is the sort of deal, in terms of time, that I though detroit should have drilled home to Cabrera. Tack on a few years, offer 30m per, and do a take it or leave it. Only an absolute fool would turn it down and wait two more season to MAYBE cash in. -

Ilitch isn't losing money though since he owns only the entire area. He puts a bunch of superstars out there and the people will flock to the stadium like last year, meanwhile he makes banks since he owns literally every parking lot except Greektown, owns the biggest bar Hockeytown, and since they have 3 legitimate superstars they then sell jerseys of Scherzer, JV and Cabrera like candyIggyPride00;1597522 wrote:Tigers owner Ilitch is reportedly detested by most other teams owners because he is willing to operate the team at a loss seemingly forever.
