Sam Young and Dejuan Blair are two that come to mind.

Harper will be a good pro and is already a better player than Eyenga. He would have competed for minutes right away.

On a side note, the Dispatch said this morning that Thompson played for Findlay Prep and played against Northland in the nationally televised game.

I remember watching him go against Sullinger but didn't realize it until it was mentioned today. Anyone know how much he's grown since his senior year?

Sam Young was drafted 36th overall. He averages 7 points, 2 boards in his two seasons, hardly stellar.

Dejuan Blair was drafted 37th overall. He averages 8 points, 7 boards in his two seasons, hardly stellar (even though I like him).

I guess we differ on two things: the actual 32nd overall pick (lol @ 36th and 37th), and what consitutes a good pro. Neither of those two players are good pros, they're simply small pieces on good teams.

I didn't look up where they were drafted just remember those two guys going early 2nd round.

But I absolutely agree with you. I wouldn't expect Harper to be the Cavs best player. But I think he will be a solid pro. The Cavs need that just as much as the stars. They passed on a role player and thats my problem.

Harper is undersized and not overly atheltic. I dont have high hopes for his career.
  • Wooball
Odds are if the Cavs planned on keeping the 32nd pick, they would not have selected Justin Harper considering their glut of 4's on the roster.

That very well might be true. But he still would have been a good pick because he's a knock down shooter with size.

This may have been mentioned but Chris Grant said his reasoning for trading Justin Harper was that they felt that they didn't have the roster spot and that they felt they could do better in free agency. Still doesn't explain why they took the other guy with their pick in the 50's.

lol at trollnasty. He talks out of his ass, and can't back it up once again. What is new? Grant has been the GM for one year and he has already failed... LMAO what an idiot.

IPOTW. This post has to be a joke. SMH.

Might as well say your stint in D3 Community College was a failure since you didnt bring home a National Championship every yr that you played.
  • SportsAndLady
Dynasty, you keep talking about the amount of failures in the 2nd round..just because Harper is the 32nd pick, doesn't take away the fact that HES IN THE 2ND ROUND!! You can't say "2nd round picks usually fail" then say that you think harper, a 2nd round pick, is going to be a good player. It's completely contradictory. And your response to that is: well he's the 32nd pick, lots of good players come from the 32nd pick...then you give 2 examples of players NOT taken with the 32nd pick. You're spinning in circles, hope you didn't have breakfast this morning.

So there are similar expectations for someone taken with the #1 pick and the 17th because they are both first round?

I know little is expected of a 2nd round pick but when it's the 32nd that's a difference than the 50th.

Yeah, but wasn't this considered an overall weak draft? At least it seemed like I read a few columns saying that it didn't have the star power and the players who could change a team's future overnight like some years have. So, the 32nd pick this year could easily not be on the level as an early second-round pick from years with more strength/depth.

    TERRIBLE comparison.

The success difference between the 1st overall pick and the 17th overall pick is HUGE. The success difference between the 32nd pick and the 49th pick isn't that much different (both picks usually fail).

It was considered weak. Had a lot of the underclassmen come out I almost guarantee that Kyrie Irving isn't the #1 pick.

Just to throw it out there, here are some recent selections at pick #32.

2010: Miami Heat - Dexter Pittman (played in 2 games)
2009: Washington Wizards - Jermaine Taylor (now with the Kings. Averages 7 ppg)
2008: OKC Thunder - Walter Sharpe (last stats are from 08-09. Don't believe he's in the league anymore)
2007: Boston Celtics - Gabe Pruitt (no stats since the 08-09 season)
2006: Houston Rockets - Steve Novak (averages 4 ppg for his career)
2005: LA Clippers - Daniel Ewing (no stats since the 06-07 season)

Not exactly great players on that list. Hell, not even any good players on that list.

    Thanks.

And if you threw out the 49th pick, it'd probably get similar results.

Now according to dynasty, if you put up players taken #1 overall they would have similar results to players taken #17 overall....SMH
  • thedynasty1998
I'm not saying that Harper was going to be a great player. But I do think he's a rotation guy.

The Dispatch had some stat this week regarding Diebler that of players drafted in the 2nd round 34% never play in the NBA. That number jumps to 50% for the 51st pick.

So yes there is a difference from the top of the 2nd to the bottom.

49th pick has actually been more productive going back to the '03 draft. Josh Selby went #49 this year. Four of the last eight players drafted at #49 have had decent NBA careers -- Aaron Gray, Leon Powe, Andray Blatche, and James Jones.

Looks like I'll be a Kings fan next season in the west. If they can somehow luckbox their way into the 7 or 8 seed that pick will be like having the 4th pick this season almost. Should be able to get similar talent.
  • riders1
The Kings pick is "lottery protected" so they won't lose a top pick , more than likely somewhere between 10 to 15th the longer they wait until 2017, 2012 would be 15th or higher and each year one pick higher until 2017, so the longer they wait the higher the chance.

I promise I'm not lame enough to create a separate screen name. Gladly ask a mod to verify. I would never be as lame as to create multiple screen names just to vote in a poll like COA.
