Lol I was just about to say..so does a sweep on the road worth 1.5 games a piece instead of 1 game a piece at home??
A sweep's a sweep. Not many teams would fair well against Carpenter, Wainwright, and Garcia. -

Your post says "If anyone thinks Reds season is over..." Well of course the season is not over, ya gotta play 'em all. So not sure WTF your post was for either. -

They haven't been swept at home all season and it happens in a Division race against the team they came into the series leading by 2 games. They could have taken control of the Division and they were not only swept, it wasn't even close. -

The only problem is that his teammates remembered that they play for the Queen City and bent over for the Redbirds. Have a nice offseason, Reds.
That clear enough for you? It's all over the radio as well. Idiots calling in and emailing 700wlw claiming that the sky is falling and the season is over. -

Your point would be valid if every game the rest of the season was against the Cards...but they play them 3 more times, in TWO MONTHS of baseball remaining. All that series says is a) the reds are now a game behind and b) the cards' top 3 pitchers are very, very good and better than any other team's top 3. -

It still counts the same in the loss column and they are only 1 game back. Not too long ago they were more than 1 game back and were able to make up ground. Of course, the Cardinals will probably go undefeated the rest of the way so the season is over. -
lhslep134Justin, I'd like to offer my objective opinion so you don't get so riled up.
It's one reason, and it is in no way ending the Reds season, but the sweep has multiple consequences:
1. The Cardinals showed they can win anywhere, no matter the environment.
2. The Cardinals have momentum, which is definitely important during the dog days of summer in penant races.
Most importantly:
3. It shows the Cardinals are still better than the Redlegs. I say this completely objectively. They have better hitting and better pitching. Does this mean that the Reds won't make the playoffs? No. Does this mean the Reds can't beat the Cardinals in a playoff series? No. But it shows the Reds have a lot of work to do to prove they can play on the Cardinals level against them, and it will be interesting to see how the Reds respond.
If you're going to take anything away from this series, it's that STL is still the class of the NL Central. -
osu45804Why does everyone think Phillips had something to prove with this statement?
He simply said he hated the Cardinals and they were bitches... Did he guarantee a victory or even a series win? No, He just simply came out and said he hated them you can't prove your gut feelings on the field. That's like if I said I hated this site and it was so minor league, How do I prove that? I can't it's just obvious -

They have better pitching, although the Reds have more depth at pitching.
But no way do the Cards have better hitting...no one in the NL has better hitting than the Reds.
The Reds lead the NL in runs, hits, RBIs, Batting average, slugging %, OPS, 2nd in total bases, 3rd in HRs. -

I think you're mistaking my opinion for fact.
I believe the Cardinals have better hitting. They certainly had the better hitting in the series, when the Reds got absolutely dominated by St. Louis' superior pitching, which is exactly what happens in the postseason.
If someone asked you who is better set up for a deep run, the Cardinals or the Reds, every baseball expert will say Cardinals based on experience and pitching, the two things mattering most in pressure packed games.
Look no further than the 1995 Indians who had by far the best hitting team in baseball. -

You're taking a small sample size to form an opinion on the whole season.
I can make an argument, based on your logic, that the Yankees aren't good because they lost 4 in a row in May.
If you want to say the Cardinals are better, that is perfectly fine...but don't say you think they're better because they swept the Reds in a 3 game series. And DEFINITELY do not say they have better hitting because their offense outplayed the Reds in one series. -

Well the Cardinals are .2 runs per game behind Cinci (4.8 to 4.6), 35 behind in hits, .03 behind them in team batting, and they both have the same OBP.
So it's not exactly a stretch to think that the Cardinals have better hitting. In fact, the Cardinals have a .22 higher batting average since the All-Star break, which is better than the Reds.
So you want to talk about sample size, but isn't recent performance more telling than the Reds hitting lights out in April, May, and June?
It's a lot closer than you think between the two teams, so I stand firm in my opinion the Cardinals are a better hitting team, right now.
You basically transposed that because I said the Cardinals hit better in the series they're better, which is a terrible transposition on your part, and now I've backed up what I said.
What say you? -
Ironman92Fact....the Reds just sucked for a span of 1/54th of the season.
Would have been nice to have Travis Wood pitching in that series. If the Reds continue taking 2 out of 3 from the Pirates, Cubs, Astros, Brewers they'll be in it all the way til the end....which is what we want.
I will say that the Reds need to keep it close to .500 in the 2 trips west and the series at St Louis. During those games the big guys must be big....not fade away and doing nothing. -

I say you're retarded. lol
I mean they're leading the league in almost every offensive category, but becuase they're only leading by a little, it means nothing. You're dumb. Stupid. Ignorant. -

And STL is in the top 5 in almost every category, mere percentage points behind the Reds, and they're actually better than the Reds since the all star break in ALL OF THOSE CATEGORIES.
It appears that you have an extremely tough time accepting reality which is the St. Louis Cardinals are the ones leading the division and are playing better than the Reds both in the past month and a half and recently.
So what exactly am I ignorant of? Or dumb about?
I'd love to hear the enlightening opinion from someone who resorts to name calling when presented with statistical evidence contrary to his argument.
If anything, you're ignorant of the Cardinals beating the Reds in almost every statistical category since the All Star break.
And if you knew anything about playing baseball, you'd know that recent performance (last couple weeks) means a lot more to a player than what they did in April, May, or June. -
Ironman92It's all matchups. The Reds could be the 1927 Yankess and aren't going to do much too often versus Carpenter or Wainright.
Right now I'd definately take the Cardinals lineup. Pretty much just Votto and the catchers are hitting pretty well -
Ironman92The Cardinals have benefitted marginally by not having to face their 2 stud pitchers.
-
SportsAndLadyI just posted facts, that the Reds lead almost every offensive category, which is what you go by to determine who the best offensive team is lol and you still want to refute that.. just because it's off by a few percentages and now it's because the last month the Cards have been better..guess what fag, the season is longer than a month.
Yeah I can't accept the fact that the Cards are in first....I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT, THE REDS ARE 10 GAMES AHEAD WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!? -

I would take the Cardinals right now too...but that doesn't mean they're the better offensive team -
Ironman92Carpenter and Wainright are so good it really offsets some pretty big offensive woes of any kind. If someone said Wainright was the best pitcher in baseball I wouldn't have any problems with that.
-
Laley23This argument reminds me of SQ and the scoring title. lol.

justincredibleAnd the Reds respond to the sweep by sweeping the Marlins. The Cardinals, meanwhile, lose 2 of 3 from the lowly Cubs.
So, it appears, the Cards sweeping the Reds did not have a resounding negative impact on the Reds or a resounding positive impact on the Cards.
