The first words out of my mouth when I saw the story on NBC4 in Columbus. And can you imagine what that looks like to a cop trying to arrest someone?Benny The Jet;1811014 wrote:My initial thought was...who mounts a laser scope on a BB gun?
An unashamedly redneck FB friend of mine in Fairfield County posted on Facebook how he was "staying out of that neighborhood tonight", as if he would regularly go there anyway. Then he said, "Guaranteed, the looters and window-breakers will be out tonight!". I rolled my eyes. You can tell he's stayed outside of Franklin County quite a while, which is probably a good thing.
On the other side of the coin, my wife's cousin, who is black, has been posting on Facebook from the black community perspective. The fact that the kid had a realistic looking gun, with a laser, as a suspect in a robbery, is NOT being emphasized. Instead, it's is age, and the alleged possibility that he was shot in the back while running away.
I'm certainly not qualified to speak for the average black American, but IMHO the Columbus black community in their heart of hearts know that the kid (and those that influenced him in some things) brought it on himself, and that the policeman's actions, no matter how many claims of "murder" are bandied about, were justified (although, as other posters already mentioned, folks are asking why the cop couldn't just shoot to wound the kid and disarm him - 'nuff said on that).
Naturally there have already been vigils, posters of remembrance, calls for a hearing, but pretty much pro forma stuff for venting. Nobody is going to burn this mother down for the time being.
On my wife cousin's FB post, some of her black friends had the guts to say that, while they were horrified a black youth was killed by the police, they understood why the cop did what he did and recognized there others who bear responsibility for the kid being in that situation. The fact that their remarks were not castigated by others is telling. -

The family is going to raise a stink because they want money from the city in a settlement. Racism pays folks! -

What is outrageous about this? It's pretty well documented that minorities are incarcerated at a higher percentage than whites for the same crimes.vball10set;1811121 wrote:"unfairly incarcerated"?!? good lord, COA, I thought I heard it all...unreal

http://www.prisonpolicy.org/graphs/raceinc.html1. While people of color make up about 30 percent of the United States’ population, they account for 60 percent of those imprisoned. The prison population grew by 700 percent from 1970 to 2005, a rate that is outpacing crime and population rates. The incarceration rates disproportionately impact men of color: 1 in every 15 African American men and 1 in every 36 Hispanic men are incarcerated in comparison to 1 in every 106 white men.
2. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, one in three black men can expect to go to prison in their lifetime. Individuals of color have a disproportionate number of encounters with law enforcement, indicating that racial profiling continues to be a problem. A report by the Department of Justice found that blacks and Hispanics were approximately three times more likely to be searched during a traffic stop than white motorists. African Americans were twice as likely to be arrested and almost four times as likely to experience the use of force during encounters with the police.
We can discuss reasons for this, but to ignore/disagree with it where there is factual evidence against it is like arguing the Earth is flat. -

And prisons are 90% men. Are you arguing that the prison system is sexist or could it be that men just commit more crimes?Commander of Awesome;1811197 wrote:What is outrageous about this? Also, LOL at the liberal trash links you've posted. NAACP? Biased much? -

No dogs in prison, you think the system is speciesist as well? As for women, According to a recent report about gender and crime, men commit more crimes than females overall. “Females have lower arrest rates than males for virtually all crime categories except prostitution”sleeper;1811198 wrote:And prisons are 90% men. Could it be that blacks commit more crimes and that police patrol areas where blacks are concentrated because those areas have the highest victims of crime? No, no, it must be racism.
When are black people going to grow up? -

So you are willing to admit that men commit more crime than women but not willing to admit that minorities commit more crime than Caucasians?Commander of Awesome;1811199 wrote:No dogs in prison, you think the system is speciesist as well? Do I believe it is due to their race? Nope. I bet if you found a study that related crime to economic situation/poverty rates you would see white crime rates and black crime rates statistically identical. However, due to the fact that currently minorities on average have higher poverty rates they will have higher crime rates. Higher crime rates=more minorities in jail.
It is not rocket science. -

I'm not disagreeing with you about this, it's just that you said unfairly incarcerated, and that's what I took issue with.Commander of Awesome;1811197 wrote:What is outrageous about this? like_thatAll this and it still doesn't explain why 70% of households are fatherless. Are you really trying to say all 70% are unfairly incarcerated?
I highly recommend volunteering for a police ride along in Oakland. You can come back and tell us how unfair they are. -

Commander of AwesomeWhen they're incarcerated at a higher clip for same crime it is unfair.

Or they commit more crimes, which statistically they do. So how again is that unfair?Commander of Awesome;1811206 wrote:When they're incarcerated at a higher clip for same crime it is unfair. -

You can use the same statistics you just posted. The only difference is the conclusion you've drawn is not fact, but an opinion.Commander of Awesome;1811205 wrote:Do some research to back up your claims please.
There isn't some vast conspiracy to arrest black people and put them in jail. They are in jail in larger numbers because they commit more crime than whites.
Reality. It's hard sometimes. -
sleeperThe reality is, the liberal media and Democrats want black people to buy into the "white oppression" bullshit so they can claim they are fighting it(they aren't) and get easy votes for a growing minority group.
I believe racism exists in this country but to say racism is the reason blacks have struggled in America is a flat out lie; the reason is because their culture, by and large, is one of no accountability, no family structure, and no emphasis on education. -

By the way, continuing to lie to black people about their struggles is the #1 way to make sure they never overcome those struggles. Maybe if you cared about black people instead of their votes you'd recognize this and help to make the world a better place. -

Talking individual basis here. 1 White Guy, 1 Black Guy commit same crime, no prior record. Chances are significant that the black man will receive a harsher sentence than the white guy.like_that;1811209 wrote:Or they commit more crimes, which statistically they do. So how again is that unfair? -

This is largely true on average because black people typically have a longer list of priors that affect their next level of punishment. If they were truly the same, they would get the same punishment on average.Commander of Awesome;1811216 wrote:Talking individual basis here. 1 White Guy, 1 Black Guy commit same crime, no prior record. Regardless, that still doesn't explain why 70% of households are fatherless and lack the family structure with a focus on discipline and education. Nobody is forcing these fathers to commit these crimes and wind up in jail whether it's proportionally for a longer time than white people. Along with my police ride along suggestion, I'd recommend also going to the Oakland county jail and you can tell us about how these unfairly incarcerated black men would be great role models for their children.
Based on your logic do you think those white fathers who are doing less time go back home and become great models for their children? Highly doubt it. It goes back to who is commiting more crime. -
