Paleo eating

I am looking to start some sort of change from eating the same garbage all the time. I'm not sure how "right" the paleo diet would be for me but I would like to look into it. The only real problem is I could never follow any "diet" strictly being 25 and wanting to drink, but I could stick to the eating part.

WebMD, which always does a decent job of uncovering the truth behind these diets, quizzed a bunch of health specialists who agreed that better health can be achieved on the Paleo, but still believe moderation is the key to overall well-being.

"People who eat diets high in whole grains, beans, and low-fat dairy tend to be healthier because these foods are nutrient-rich and there are mountains of research about the health benefits of diets that include, not exclude, these foods,” Keith Ayoob, EDd, RD, and assistant professor at New York's Albert Einstien School of Medicine told the site.

That "mountains of research" bit touched upon by Ayoob is one of the problems facing the Paleo from gaining more scientific backing. There just haven't been enough large studies to satisfy experts; which is one of the main reasons why U.S. News & World

    Agreed.

BTW...this Wendler 5/3/1 program is ridonkulous. Breaking PR's every workout and I literally CAN'T wait for every weight training day to come. Hit 7 reps on a prescribed 3 rep day for overhead press this morning. Getting much stronger, adding size and shedding fat....good stuff!

I have been trying to figure out my tolarance for chocolate. I love the 70%. The 85% is about as high as I can go. Is it worth eating the 70% or whould it be 85% or higher to make it worth it?

I think 70% would be fine.

Interesting read. I'm intrigued to do some additional research on this. Kinda turns conventional wisdom on its head (which happens semi-frequently these days).

BTW ... where are you guys buying this high % chocolate?

Also interested --- I looked at Kroger's and it was like $3.00 per bar --- 'bout to check out amazon and slickdeals.

Walmart. Get a brand name, 85-90% dark chocolate for $2.46. I make a casein protein "ice cream" right before I go to bed by throwing 8-10 ice cubes in a blender, 2 cups of coconut milk, 2 scoops ON's chocolate peanut butter casein protein and a square of the dark chocolate. Blend until soft serve like. SO good !

I will tell you this about eating Paleo. I no longer crave anything sweet and I'd previously kill a man for a Butterfinger bar. I get my carbs from vegetables, occasional fruits and sweet potatos. I wish I could honestly say (not really), "man I really want some pizza/candy/ etc", but I'd be lying.

This way of eating has shed a sh#tload of bodyfat and weight and has allowed me to cut back my workout time significantly. The food that I consume does most of the work. I have my "official" 4 week weigh-in/bodyfat measurement on Saturday and I should reach a milestone. I will weigh the least I've weighed since I left for college football two-a-days 25 years ago.

I can't say enough about this. It's worth trying.

And now, for you protein "bar" lovers, take a bite out of this baby...

I've been experimenting with 'paleo' for a month+
I have more closely been following the 'slow-carb diet' Tim Ferris describes in his book 'The Four Hour Body'

Basically ... protein + vegetables + beans + popcorn ... is the major majority of my meals, with 1-1.5 "cheat" days a week.

So far I have been averaging ~2 lbs lost per week.

I really need to increase my weight lifting, I have been doing minimal lately but I hope to increase it in the next 1-2 months, once some things clear up in my schedule.

I am definitely going to get me some high % chocolate ... But does anyone have any experience/knowledge of "slow-carb" vs "paleo"??
  • BR1986FB
    Haven't done the slow carb.

The lifting should definitely kickstart your metabolism and help your progress significantly. Lifting > cardio for fat loss

Started my second wave of Wendler's 5/3/1 today.

Good workout. Got 11 reps on my last "all out" set of 5. Also had weigh in/bodyfat measurements, as mentioned. Dropped 3 more lbs in 4 weeks so I'm down 71 lbs. That's a milestone in that I'm now at the lowest bodyweight I've been since I left for college football two-a-days 25 years ago, also as previously mentioned. Have about 15 more lbs to drop before I should see a significant six pack, That will probably be around December at the rate I'm going.

OK, I have no problem finding grass fed beef. Where should I look for pastured poultry eggs & grass fed butter?

Kerry's gold is best grassfed butter and is available at most whole food type places. Eggs and chicken should be easy to spot in same type of store.

I was down to 169 today. Yikes. I was doing stronglift 5x5s are promptly reinjured an old shoulder injury while benchpressing. I also had a minor tweak in (my back probably from bad form) when deadlifting. I think I am going back to push ups pull ups and body weight squats and lunge routines and P90x. When I hit the heavy weights I have too much risk of injury. IMO.

+1...I get my Kerry Gold Irish Butter at Giant Eagle. Hear they sell it much cheaper, in bulk, at Costco. Coconut oil works well too. Makes eggs taste so much different (better). As far as eggs, I just snag the Eggland's Best at Walmart enriched with extra Omega 3's. Don't really eat eggs or bacon as much as I was since I no longer eat breakfast. I'll occasionally have them on a Sunday.

Kind of why I switched over to Wendler 5/3/1. Squatting heavy 3x's a week was beating the Hell out of me.

Didn't think this was worth it's own thread but for those of you who have done Warrior Dash or Tough Mudder I think this would be fun as Hell. Too bad the only location, so far, is Baltimore, MD.

Buddy of mine really wants to do the Tough Mudder and is trying to get me to go along with it. I went to the website and it doesn't even eplain what it is/how long the course is.

Are you talking about Tough Mudder or the link I posted for "how long the course is?"
