College Basketball Random Chatter 2013-2014 Season

At 20-10 and 8-9 in the Big XII, I'd agree Oklahoma State is now in (had they lost tonight and at Iowa State, they were firmly out with a 7-11 record in conference).

IMO a loss at Iowa State later in the week could still leave the Cowboys in some doubt IF they also lose in the first round of their conference tournament. At 20-12 and 8-10 in the Big XII (including a 5-10 record to finish the year), I'm not sure I'd be as confident as some of you are here if I were an Okie State fan. The Bubble Buster is a very scary concept this time of year for any team in a major conference that has even a sliver of doubt during championship week.

Creighton possibly in jeopardy of falling from 2 or 3 seed consideration with a loss in Landover tonight. Jays trail the Hoyas by seven with about four minutes to play on FS1. Creighton trailed by 15 or so earlier in the half, but McDermott has led the late rally. He's got 22 and 11. Kid is just a machine.

Is Baylor back in the tourney? 20-10, 8-9 in the Big 12. Big win tonight by 13 points over Iowa State.

Impressive wins over Kentucky, Colorado, Dayton and Ok State twice. 8 of 10 losses against quality opponents. They could use a road win this weekend @ Kansas State to solidify their position.

I was going to post this same thing about Baylor earlier. I saw this on ESPN today. It's an interesting breakdown of OK State and Baylor and their chances of at-large bids as bubble teams.

There are five Big XII locks right now -- KU, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas State. The question becomes will there be enough spots available in the tournament after all is said and done for the Big XII to get 7 teams in the Big Dance. If it only gets six, who is left out?

Based on how close the resumes are between Oklahoma State and Baylor, I think Baylor has the edge based on the merit of its stronger SOS and also beating Baylor twice. As the ESPN write-up above states, the selection committee loves teams who challenge themselves early in the year.

I think they're good for now, but they'll be right back on the bubble with a loss to KSU.

Iowa State is not a very good team outside of Ames.

Assuming Oklahoma State loses at Iowa State and Baylor loses at Kansas State, and both the Cowboys and Bears sit at 20-12 and 8-10 heading into the Big XII Tournament, which of the two is in better alignment for the conference's sixth NCAA bid?

Unless the Big XII gets seven teams in, it's gotta be Baylor. They have beaten the Cowboys twice this year and own the better OOC wins. Baylor's resurgence is a nightmare for Okie State fans. Of course, it's possible the Big XII gets seven teams in.

I would think that Baylor is probably in better shape, but it will probably depend on how much the committee overlooks the Ok State results without Smart.

I said about midseason that UK wasn't a very good team, but I expected them to be on the upswing at this point. Disappointed that they aren't better, but relying on Freshman is always a crap shoot.

True. Oklahoma State did lose four games in a row prior to Smart's suspension, though, so it'll be interesting to see how the committee views everything.

If anything, I think Smart's suspension probably helped the team. The Cowboys were spiraling downward fast and Smart looked like he had mailed it in. Since his return from the suspension, Smart has played with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. The game in Ames this weekend should be awesome since Oklahoma State will be playing for its life. A win and they are in the NCAAs for sure.

I guess I never thought of a school from a non power conference to topped IU's undefeated season, but it does make sense as if you can get a really, really good team you can go through the regular season nut roll easier than if you were in a big conference.
Call me crazy, but I think Wichita St. becomes the first team to lose to a 16 seed as a #1. I don't think they are any good.

They went to the final four last year.

Indeed. I could see them losing to an 8/9 seed because...

    1. They're the hunted now and not the hunter (where high-level mid-majors thrive the most)

    and

    2. They haven't played anyone of note in a long time, while odds are the teams in the 8/9 spot will be good, but inconsistent teams who've been in a number of wars through their conference season.

But against a #16 seed...lol, those are the same sorts of team they've been rolling all year long in their conference.

I gotta say I'm excited to see who gets matched up with Davidson, assuming they don't choke away their bid.

Toledo wrapped up a bye to the semi finals last night by finished top 2 in the MAC. I fully believe the MAC to be a 1 bid league? But I could see Toledo earning a fairly high seed as that 1 bid. Only 4 losses would be tough to put any higher then a 12. I could see them as a 10-12.

It'd be pretty cool to see Toledo on national television in a 12-v-5 game. I hope they do well in Cleveland.

12-0 run for Louisville as soon as I turned it on. This is the first time I've seen SMU all year I think.
