College Basketball Random Chatter 2013-2014 Season

Pretty excited for Kansas/SDSU coming up on CBS

Alford sending a statement to Enfield?

100-62 UCLA with over 5 minutes left.

San Diego State playing tough early in Allen. Josh Davis was as big an off-season pick up as any in college basketball. Kid could've went anywhere with his final year of eligibility, yet Steve Fisher landed him in the Mountain West.

The level of consistency of Fisher's program over the last decade has been amazing, and he never gets the recognition he deserves being the head of a smaller school. At a major program, with his recruiting, he's got another title by now.

Kansas looks horrible...crazy to think they may have 4 losses before Big 12 play starts

Kansas has no flow on offense in the half court. They really need an upgrade at PG.

I'm a big fan of Mason....they need him in there over Tharpe

Crazy game. Sdsu could choke this

San Diego State is a very good team, possibly Final Four caliber. That was a great college basketball game this afternoon.

I'm picturing it 10 weeks from now.

After a loss, Wiggins has yet another game where he stands around, makes a play here and there, forces a few jump shots and bam, his college career is over. STILL WAITING for him to take over...

    No way.

Same thing would've been said at this point of the year about any of the other schools that made long tournament runs from small conferences.

It's a good team led by a great coach with a legit chance to make noise in the tournament. Aside from a more-than-convincing win over Kansas, the Aztecs pulled within a bucket of Arizona with a couple of minutes left before ultimately succumbing to the Wildcats by nine. It's a team that competes and one that, while perhaps outmatched in terms of talent, will not beat itself. It's a fundamentally sound team with veteran guard play and a strong front-court that will do work on the glass. I like them.

    Does Wichita State lose?

    At Missouri State next Saturday.
Vs Indiana State in 2 weeks.
At Indiana State in 4 weeks.

Honestly, I can see them going unbeaten. They may end up playing Gonzaga in bracket busters. Win that, and they likely enter the NCAA Tournament 35-0.

And to think many were comparing Wiggins to Lebron! I "lol" when I first starting reading that comparison. The kid is super talented, but what you said above, has been the knock on him for a long while. And he has yet to shake that rap. Starting to become a major concern IMO. Not sure he has it mentally. Easy to get away with that in the HS level when you are SO much better than others...not gonna get away with it at this level consistently, and certainly not in the NBA.

At the risk of escalating another Andrew Wiggins debate, I think the biggest thing differentiating Wiggins from other similarly talented players at this level is not so much skill level as it is a lack of comfort in playing the role of leading man.

Part of that could attributed to Bill Self's offensive system. But the biggest contributing factor to this IMO -- and this may sound sort of strange -- is that Wiggins is by nature more of an introverted and compassionate kid who seems genuinely concerned about not appearing selfish or overstepping of any of his teammates. Not that most great players are selfish guys who lack concern for others. Some guys are just better able to balance being both teammates and the stars of their teams. I think Wiggins really has an issue with being in the spotlight, and I think does his best to avoid it. The problem is, Kansas is a better team when Wiggins allows himself to be selfish. To a certain degree, of course. A great player is one that also makes his teammates better. But sometimes, it's ok and even necessary for them to let selfishness creep in. JMO.

How many losses do they take before the Bill Self "system" starts to adapt to the fact that he has one of the best talents in the world?

Yeah, I mean, as I said in my post above, Kansas is better when its offense runs through Andrew Wiggins. Similarly to Syracuse in 2002-03, Wiggins has gotta be "the guy" for the Jayhawks to have a chance to cut down the nets, whether that fits into Bill Self's philosophy or not. Look at the Florida game for all the proof needed.

However, as we are seeing, I just don't think Andrew Wiggins is comfortable being that player.

Why would Bill self completely change his offense that has brought him so much success, for one talented player?

    To win a title?

He can still win a title. Their 4 losses were to top 20 teams. I'm not at all worried. Self lately has gotten his teams to play together towards the end of the season.

But it's not their best. Andrew Wiggins is considered the elite talent of the country, you change your main game plan a little to fit that. He's not just another piece, he's the best

I disagree, bill self told wiggins in his recruitment that he wouldn't change his offense for wiggins to put up 30 and 10 every game. He said he's trying to win a national championship and wiggins would just be another piece of the puzzle. Wiggins committed.

I don't think anyone here is saying that Wiggins has to average 30 points a game for him to confirm his hype or for Kansas to hoist the Wooden trophy at the end of the year.

What Wiggins will need to do in order for Kansas to play deep into March is, as he did in the Duke and Florida games, command the ball down the stretch and truly take ownership of his position as the indisputable best player on his team. When he plays with that type of confidence, as we've seen in small doses this season, Kansas is tough to stop.

Yeah I definitely agree. Trust me, I concede wiggins has looked wayyyy over hyped. But I think he'll be fine by the time march rolls around. Obviously have nothing to go on with that, other than my confidence in self's ability to coach in the tourney.

I didn't think he'd have a Kevin durant type effect on college basketball, but I thought he'd be better than what he's shown so far.
  • Azubuike24
I don't think Self should change anything. However, at some point, you have to unleash that "mode" when it matters. I know as a fan, I'd like to see it BEFORE the Tournament.

Believe, me I feel the same about UK. If teams like this are good all year, but still up and down heading into March, I question whether they actually can run off 6 wins in a row.

A title or bust is the expectation too...

I'm not saying make the offense like it is around Kobe where he shoots the ball an insane amount and basically plays selfish. Put him in a role similar to the one Harden had
