2013 recruiting chatter

Anthony Bennet to UNLV. Holy shit, that might be the scariest Mid-Major we have seen in a long time (pre-season).
  • Azubuike24
The Bennett saga has been interesting. We'll see though. Still interesting how Florida and Kentucky seemingly withdrew interest in one of the top 5 players when a month ago they were the co-leaders.

UNLV thought they might get Shabazz and Bennett was the in-state (at least playing at Findlay) guy nobody considered them to be a player for. Now he's a Rebel.

Devonta Pollard is the only 5-star player left (Rivals 22)
Amile Jefferson going to decide Tuesday (Rivals 36)
Montrezl Harrell (former VT commit) has re-opened his commitment (Rivals 82)
Torian Graham may not qualify but is taking visits (Rivals 67)

    Amile Jefferson to Duke.

Nerlens Noel is a high school graduate...

He subsequently sent Pete Thamel a copy of his graduation photo w/degree in-hand, along with an autographed copy of his May 8th, 2012 articles in the New York Times.

    smh

Hey, the article about him being "investigated" was posted in here. I figure that had as much to do with recruiting as my post...
  • chicago510
He acts like the investigating will stop just because he graduated.

Notre Dame got a pretty big commitment today from Demetrius Jackson. Top 5ish point guard chose ND over Illinois and is probably Brey's biggest get at Notre Dame.

That is a big get for ND

As for top recruits, dont forget that Chris Thomas was a top 5 player nationally in 2001 (by many accounts).

    As for 2013 recruiting.

Indiana is in the top 4 (though most say top 2) for David Williams with UNC. Also going head to head, by most accounts with UNC for Noah Vonleh and that is Creans #1 priority. Would be a huge get, #3 nationally.

Also in the top 4 for BeeJay Anya (along with OSU)

Anya and Williams will be on campus for Midnight Madness (which IU is holding Oct. 20th...a week later than most). Vonleh is said to be coming in for an official once he takes his SAT (he has reclassified to 2013 and you cant take officials until you have taken the SAT once).

Torrin Francis was another top 10 recruit for Brey. I meant big get more so because he was a local kid that got some major interest from some big programs. Brey pretty much recruited Jackson personally since his freshman year. But yes, Thomas was a huge get too.

    Gotcha.

Yeah, Jackson is a big time get to get him to stick around the area. He is going to be a player imo. I honestly think this is a case where moving to the ACC might have helped. I know he was looking at Illinois also, but if your going to stay local, going against UNC and Duke each year is probably exciting moreso than Indiana and MSU. When it was Big East, I dont think playing those teams would bring out the excitement as much as the ACC to trump the B10 schools.

Yeah he actually had a quote somewhere right after the move was announced that it was huge that he'd potentially get to play against Carolina and Duke. I know they won't be there when all is said and done, but its crazy to see Notre Dame with a top 5 basketball recruiting class.
  • Azubuike24
Excited for the bulk of the 2013 kids to start deciding. Many look like it will be spring though.
  • reclegend22
Not surprisingly, its sounds as if Carolina, Duke and Kentucky are the three schools in which No. 1 power forward Julius Randle will be choosing from. I believe Kansas and -- much less so -- Baylor are also in the mix, but from the glowing praise he's had for the three schools mentioned above I'd personally be surprised if Randle went anywhere other than Tobacco Road or the Commonwealth.

His mother, whom many believe will have a very strong influence on Randle's ultimate decision due to their ultra-close relationship, is a lifelong Duke fan and is suspected to want her son in Durham. This certainly guarantees nothing, but probably doesn't hurt things for the Blue Devil camp. If Duke were somehow to sign both Randle and Jabari Parker I will probably drink myself to death to mark the occasion, so I hope there is Dish Network in heaven. If it's just cumulonimbus clouds and stringed instruments, I am going to be pissed.
  • Azubuike24
    Duke and Kentucky for Randle.

I'm drooling over the possibility of the Aaron Harrison, Andrew Harrison, Julius Randle, James Young and Andrew Wiggins to UK. I honestly think it's possible. It would give UK 4 of the top 5 players and 5 of the top 10.
  • reclegend22
The Harrison twins are definitely fascinating. God, what genetics, to have twins who are each the top players in the country at their respective positions. Talk about hitting the hereditary lottery. That, to me, is even more impressive than the Plumlee situation at Duke, which is extraordinary in its own right.

Why is Maryland even listed as a contender in the Harrison race? I am assuming it has something to do with Mark Turgeon's Texas connection, but I have to imagine if the Terrapins are going to land a set of twins, they'd have a more realistic chance of signing Mark Kate and Ashley Olsen.
  • Azubuike24
Their dad played at Maryland and both parents are MD grads, I believe.

We'll see. I mean, given the obvious connection, you have to wonder what else MD can sell the twins that isn't already present? While UK is UK, the way Cal has recruited and built his roster, it has been predicated by playing time and development, which won't be finalized until the spring when guys announce for the NBA. The longer it drags out, the less chance Maryland has. If they were Maryland bound, they would commit...

Ah, I obviously haven't been following their recruitment closely enough. That makes sense then.

As for what else Maryland can sell, I wonder if Turgeon had already built a recruiting rapport with the twins while coaching at A&M and if that, on top of their Dad's history as a player for the Terrapins, is one of the major reasons they find College Park appealing? The Harrisons are from Texas, correct? As we have seen in the past, mediocrity doesn't always hurt a school's chances with a recruit if the coach is able to kindle a special bond with that recruit. Look at the talent Sidney Lowe was able to convince to come to N.C. State, without ever once even reaching the NCAA tournament. It was crazy how Lowe was able to reel in top talent without any proven success whatsoever.

Maryland signing the Harrison twins would be wonderful for the ACC, but, like you, I just don't see it.
  • Azubuike24
The Harrison's are announcing Thursday on ESPNU at 5 PM.

This will have a huge impact on the rest of the 2013 class. If they pick Maryland, look for UK to get involved with a TON more kids. Their aggressiveness has been tapered a lot in this class as I think Calipari really thinks he has his class already sealed. We'll see.

Kentucky, Maryland and Southern Methodist are his final three. His father and Larry Brown also have a previous relationship of some sort, which is why I assume SMU is still hanging around.

Lol'd. Like Maryland even has a real shot.

Sorry, I just assume any top 10 player outside of Shabazz that has Kentucky as a top choice is going there. Maybe they have a shot but I doubt it.
  • Azubuike24
    I'd say probably 60/40 UK.

A few things going against them. A) connection between parents and Maryland. B) announcing early.

It's funny too. The twins are heading to UK's Big Blue Madness in 2 weeks. They cancelled a trip to Maryland's madness. They are also headed to Brooklyn in November, as Kentucky plays Maryland on opening night at the new Nets Arena. This seemed to be an indicator, but that was if they were announcing in the spring, like most assumed. All of the sudden, they are announcing this week.

I think Maryland has more of a chance than people believe...but Cal has been in on the twins just as long and they were rumored to be UK bound over a year ago. We'll see...

Just saw this on another site. According to college basketball reporter Jason Jordan at USA Today, Duke -- to great surprise on my end -- is not even in the top six. Duke, North Carolina and Baylor appear to be out of the running. If I had my guess, I'd say it is Kentucky for the win.

Just confirmed w/ Julius Randle's mother Carolyn Kyles that he's cut his list to: Kentucky, NC State, Fla, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma.
