5/7/11 More trouble for OSU

WriterbuckeyeAs a matter of fact, didn't FSU do just that with Bowden after several "scandals" before he was forced to retire?

What exactly has he done, that any other high profile college coach has not done? They all donate the use of their name for community events, they all are required to give speeches and raise money at various functions for the school, he has helped numerous players succeed in life by letting them play football and has produced some real screwballs for society to deal with, just like all other coaches. What makes him any better than any other big time college coach? -
trep14Big Gain must work at a rival Ohio State campus newspaper or something. That's the only way I can explain the hatred for the newspaper here when clearly if there is anyone to be mad at for blowing the whistle, its Ray Small.

All proceeds from his books go to fund the OSU library; he and his wife have also donated an additional $100,000 to the library, along with hosting numerous fund raising functions; when at Youngstown, he gave $125,000 for a new recreation center. He rarely charges fees for speaking, and spends a lot of time speaking at fundraisers, along with donating items for charitable auctions and the like.
Not all big-time coaches do that much, and I'm sure this is only a brief part of all the charitable work he has done in his long coaching career that we hear about. A lot of it is done out of the limelight.
And whether others do as much or not really isn't the issue. HE does it, and he doesn't have to. It's a sign of good character to pay forward whenever you can. -
karen lotzWhat is the quote about your true character shining through when no one is looking? Yeah, Tressel does some nice things, and so do A LOT of other coaches. Those are things that are done in the public eye. What does he do when no one is looking? He covers things up and lies about it.
Note: do you like my random use of bolded words? I hope they really drive home my point. -

The ignorance in this statement is extremely laughable.
From Moeller's blog (and he would know a hell of a lot more about it than you Lotz)
Coach Tressel is a better person than most people can ever dream about becoming and has helped me grow as a person since my first day at Ohio State. Yes, he made a mistake that has been blown out of proportion, but one mistake does not define a person. It’s funny, I walked into church last Sunday to find Coach Tress worshipping in the front row – 20 minutes early so he could give a speech to our group because a student intern asked him if he would come talk to us. That is just one of the things he does all the time that people don’t see. They don’t see the 1000′s of hours he has spent with young children, sick patients, our armed forces, etc… Sadly, many just see a coach in a sweater vest that “lied”. They miss the great man that gives back to the world 24/7 and helps young kids like me grow into men; even the ones that everyone had already given up on like Ray Small. -

Dude, it's pathetic to try to play this card to downplay what is going on. Pretty much every major FBS coach does these things. Even Rich Rodriguez did these things, all while people were bashing him and questioning his character and morals. -

Ok, what did he do when he was in his office by himself? Did he act with integrity or cover up and lie about it? You are ignorant if you say he acted like he preaches to everyone. And like I said, I would venture to guess that a lot (can't say everyone because OSU fans will throw a fit) of big time coaches do those same positive things. I'm not saying that all coaches act perfectly all the time when no one is looking, but you can't just brush it aside with Tressel because he wrote a couple books. -
Y-Town Steelhoundkaren lotz;784302 wrote:The guys who wrote the story said they reached out to quite a few ex players/players and Small was the only one to respond to them.
This is incorrect. The Lantern interviewed over 10 past football players for this story including Ray Small and Malcolm Jenkins (immediately disproving your statement that he was "the only one to talk to them"). Small's word's were printed because they were the only ones to differ from what everyone else was saying. The Lantern knew they had a national story and used it to get themselves on OTL, ABAO, etc... -
Tobias FünkeThe ESPN poll "Of which football program do you view more favorably?" has Ohio State and USC split dead even at 50%. That is saying something.

I'm pretty sure you would've seen similar results even before the Tressel/Tatgate thing. OSU is one of those teams like the Yankees, ND, Cowboys, Lakers, etc that you either love or hate. Let's just say the hater bandwagon is growing more than ever lately. -

Good article comparing OSU with USC. -

Unscientific polls say nothing at all.....and they say even less without a baseline. -

I find it comical that Moeller makes a point that 'everyone' (used by ray small) was an exaggeration then proceeds to state "They don't see the 1000's of hours he has spent with young children, sick patients, our armed forces, etc."lhslep134;784487 wrote:The ignorance in this statement is extremely laughable.

1000s would mean more than 1000, so at least 2000 hours. I'm not convinced he realizes that 2000 hours is probably a stretch....and not a small stretch either. His rebuttal against Titus (if you can call it that) resorted to childish attacks about him being nothing more than a benchwarming bum. Titus never said everyone was doing it, or even how many were doing it, just an observation that he noticed it was definitely happening. Where was the backlash for Pittman's tweet? What about Spielman's comments?
Everyone has lied or stretched the truth. JT isn't the saint some like to portray. He is a coach that wants to win games and is apparently willing to lie to do so. Him spending "1000s" of hours doing nice things means nothing to the issue at hand. The issue at hand is that shit has hit the fan in Columbus and he knew about it. -

Whatever. I'm not arguing against your point, just saying I'd give him a second chance based on his entire body of work against what (at this point, anyway) appears to be a huge aberration.
Oh and my use of bold isn't random...it was created so you can make points of emphasis. Otherwise, why the fuck is it even available on the site? Don't like it? Suffer. -

It figures you'd say that. Ignorance or just blind hatred of OSU? Regardless, FSU had a huge free shoes/agent scandal and also a widespread academic scandal a few years later where FSU had to forfeit a bunch of wins. That's two right off the top of my head before Bowden was finally forced to retire. -

trying to comapre the tressel and bowden is just plain ignorant. and shows how stupid you are. bowden built FSU into a perenial power, with 15 consecutive top 5 finishes. FSU was below mid major standards before bowden got there. thats why he got a break. and also bowden actually suspended players and booted players off the team, and not just reserve players. do you think tressel would have booted a player as talented as randy moss? never gonna happen. who has tressel ever booted out of there that was a top flight player? tressel's idea of punishment is taking away their high speed connection. bowden didnt lie and try to cover things up, he owned up like a man and handed out punishment. cant say the same for minnimum jim . -

Lying and exaggerating are different. If you take the "everyone" literally, you are a moron. -
