No but they can punish a coach to a level where it only makes sense to. For example they could limit his time with recruits, number of recruiting visit etc, and also ban him from coach games for 1 year, 2 years, on and on. -
enigmaaxdokken;749494 wrote:So if they have to forfeit the Sugar Bowl it will all go back to OSU being winless in bowls against SEC competition.
If anything, it would be vacated and not forfeited. Meaning that the game won't exist in OSU's records (so in that sense, they'd still be winless) but Arkansas would still show a loss to OSU in their record book. So, depending on how you look at that. Though I would say that vacated wins don't really mean shit - as in, everyone knows who won on the field and thats all that really matters. -

Here's the article I read last week, I guess. A couple of those lines from Smith seem to have a different tone than the original press conference. Could be nothing, but it is definitely not the shining endorsement that had previously occurred.

Smith said Tressel was supposed to apologize in March at a news conference on the situation but failed to do so, and that only after meeting with Smith did the coach finally say he was sorry in a public forum.
Tressel was supposed to apologize that night, but did not.
"Then we got with him and he got better at it," Smith said. "It's an emotional thing."
Smith would not say how much the investigation into Tressel's NCAA troubles would cost, although the university has hired two what he called "expensive" companies to help. He said Ohio State may have to make up the difference by dipping into the money the Buckeyes made from their appearance in the Sugar Bowl.
"It's a nightmare," he said. -
LJkaren lotz;749503 wrote:They can't directly fire him, but they can make him unemployable by slapping him with a Show Cause penalty.
Unemployable to other universities. Typically though, a violation that warrants a show cause is bad enough for the university to fire the employee, but if they are under contract, it only applies to them seeking another, an extension, or a new contract. Although, I believe that any coach that has been hit with it had already been fired or resigned before the ruling -

Yeah I understand that part but like you said no other coach who has been given Show Cause and still been employed. IF Tressel is given Show Cause, I'd think it would force either OSU to let him go or for him to resign. -

Well, I don't think the show cause has every caused someone to get fired, I think it usually comes down after they are unemployed. I think if it gets that bad they are getting fired no matter what. Although, I am not sure he would get hit with it anyway, as every single one has been recruiting violations -

I keep hearing this suggested a lot. But is there any proof that this is true? Any case studies where a school let a coach go and the rulings were less? Sure didn't help Michigan when they fired Fisher. -
WebFirenwofbfan;749486 wrote:My question is, why do they have to wait until August to rule on this issue? Why not now?
Remember, they aren't ruling in August. OSU just gets to defend itself in August. When Michigan was going through stretch-gate, they went before the NCAA in August and didn't know their fate until the season was almost over. -

Which is going to be akward timing given that it will be about the time Tressel returns to the sidelines. -

Not to mention it drives you nuts as a fan. It dragged out over the entire season and you were always wondering what was going to happen and people kept speculating. -

Will be interesting to see what happens with the Tennessee basketball situation. Most people think Pearl was let go to lessen the penalties against the program. -

Right, which is why I said "no other coach has been given Show Cause and still been employed". Bruce Pearl was going to be given Show Cause more than likely, but Tennessee fired him before the NCAA ruled that way. -

I think what makes the situations different is that Pearl just kept comitting violations over and over. I think it's really hard to use that as a measuring stick. It's almost as though if Tenn did not let him go that they could be seen as supporting Pearl's continued violations -
stlouiedipalmaI never thought this way before but now I really believe that Tressel will step down rather than see TOSU get dragged through the mud on these issues. It's my opinion that he thinks too much of the program and the institution and will spare it any further embarrassment.
Even if we don't see a ruling until November or December it will tarnish TOSU for the entire season. The speculators will have a field day and I don't think Tressel would allow that to happen. -

But you cannot argue that had the players not done what they did, Tressel would never had been put in the position to make the wrong decision. Doesn't mean I blame the players for Tressel's failures, but their actions put him in the position to make the wrong decision.
But here is the issue I have. Tressel should have been monitoring these players more closely. Hell, I heard rumblings about Pryor a year or so ago in terms of money and clothes he was wearing. On top of that, some(people I know) fairly close to the program thought Pryor was involved with something. You have to have a pulse on your program and players. Tressel is the head coach, period. It starts with him, and ends with him. If it were only one player, I'd say ok..this is a single circumstance. But we are talking about a handful. And kids this age, don't keep their mouth shut very long about things. I'd bet money Tressel heard about some things even prior to getting the emails. And just as he did with the emails, he turned a blind eye. Thats my two cents.
As for next season..its a wash IMO. It means nothing. Its stained and will be even worse when the players return after their 5 games. The whole thing will be rehashed over and over. I'd luv to fast forward through next year to be honest. I look more forward to basketball(OSU) season right now. -

so he couldn't have said something to them in person? -

emails yes, but who's to say he didn't say something to one (or both) of them "in confidence", and in person? just a thought -

So that would come out how? I really think you are stretching with this theory at this point. -

LJ, why do you continually feel threatened by someone else having a theory? in the words of Andy Dufrane, stop being so obtuse  -
sleeperSo from what I gather from the NCAA:
$13,385 > The negligent death of a 20 year old -

Who says I am threatened? I just feel that this theory is an extreme long shot at this point. Even if he did tell Smith, in private, in person, what proof would there be? There would be no way for the NCAA to prove it. I'm not sure why you think I am "threatened" by your theory that all signs point to being wrong... -

Last I checked the NCAA doesn't police interns in lifts. -

Well that is where I disagree with you. Tressel gets paid to coach the football team, not be their babysitters -
karen lotzAnthony Rothman on ESPN College Football Live just said Tressel won't lose his job over this because most of the fans blame Pryor and the players for this rather than Tressel. That can't be though because LJ says its all Tressel's fault.
