Haha so you'd be OK with recruiting "character" guys and going 5-7 every year? -

So recruiting character guys automatically means a losing record? The best players have shitty characters? Hmmm. -

The best players are Maurice Clarett, Terrelle Pryor, Ted Ginn, Troy Smith, etc. If you don't want these guys to be recruited anymore, don't expect 11-2 seasons. -

You're dodging the question. -

While this is not true 100% of the time it is true. A lot of times these kids have been allowed to do whatever their whole life because they are good at sports. Many of the best athletes also come from rough backgrounds. So you can eliminate guys with character flaws and be Notre Dame (sorry couldn't resist) or you can take the chance on risky character guys and actually win. Up until it blows up in your face.friendfromlowry;751948 wrote:So recruiting character guys automatically means a losing record? The best players have shitty characters? Hmmm. -
MulvaPersonally, I think losing hundreds of thousands of dollars and >40% of a season is enough of a punishment for lying/withholding information. He's a football coach, and his main job is to win football games, which he does at an unbelievably high rate. He did something stupid, not illegal.
Also (not that it matters what I think, but), I really don't give a shit about what other people think about Ohio State's football program. It isn't going to stop Ohio State fans from supporting the team and raking in money for the school and it probably won't impact what happens on the field (unless the hammer is dropped, in which case after 8 BCS trips in 9 years we were due for a couple of down years anyway). -

It is a good comparison, but to be fair the majority of Notre Dame's problems have been with coaching since Lou Holtz left, not personal. Weis and Kelly have all but leveled the playing field in the last four years. There is a group of players each year who are highly recruited and great people too. It's not that hard, the know-nothings at ESPN try to say academic requirements, etc will keep a team from getting the best players and that is horseshit. It simply isn't rare to find a good football player who isn't a jackass. No one here is saying don't recruit kids from Glenville, or people as athletic as Pryor. Hell, I don't even care if they're dumber than a box of rocks in the classroom. Academic stupidity isn't a reflection of someone's character, selling Sportsmanship Awards (illegally no less) is.
I just don't get how you can root for guys like him. It's "our thugs are better than your thugs!" that you're cheering for. Whatever it takes to win I guess. I would rather be 10-2 without Pryor than 12-0 with him, I can say that much. You wouldn't be 5-7 without these asshats. -

You act like the recruits are all felons. You're acting like our QB is a murderer but he at least wins us games. Pryor sold his stuff for money...what else has he done that makes you think he's some felon? -

You're acting like every other player Jim Tressel can recruit is athletically challenged. Pryor is an incorrigible piece of shit; if you went to school at Ohio State you would hear a new story weekly.
But again, this isn't even about Pryor. This is Jim Tressel thinking to himself:
"Well, I know Pryor and Posey should be reported to the proper authorities so we can get our slap on the wrist for something minor that they did their freshmen year. But, we are #1, and we shouldn't lose a game unless we give it away....and how will recruiting go from here on out if recruits don't think I have their back? I'm the closest I've been to a title and years and recruiting will suffer. Let's not report this."
That, in my opinion, is a serious violation and Ohio State would gain points in my eyes if they had him resign to a position in the athletic department and hired someone else to run the program. That's all people like myself and Herbstreit want. -

Your entire post is just plain retarded...congrats on idiot post of the week or whatever COA calls it. -
enigmaaxdlazz;751930 wrote:So you'd be OK with the stigma that USC is going through right now?
Is the stigma at USC the problem, or is it that they're losing a shit ton of money? Everyone else in the country was crying about USC for five years without knowing shit. They didn't care. The minute the NCAA stepped in and the future was affected, they had to get their shit together.
There's only one real reason why OSU would or should get rid of Tressel over the whole deal - it is going to cost them too much in the future. It doesn't matter what other fanbase calls them dirty for the next 100 years. It doesn't matter how many chump reporters question Tressel's integrity. It only matters whether or not he'll continue to bring in recruits, win games, and make the university money. Obviously, probation or a bowl ban, etc. creates challenges but if the NCAA doesn't tack those things onto the punishment, then why not let him serve his punishment and move forward? -
WebFireSportsAndLady;751812 wrote:Because someone was trying to say doing illegal things mean you have no character. Is it really difficult to get the analogy?
Actually, I said you have no character if you committed the violations this topic is about knowing it could cause harm to the university. I didn't say anything about breaking the law, or doing illegal things. Only you did that. Nice try though.
Also, according to your thinking, a murderer and speeder are on the same level. Smooth. -

Ahhh the "I can't really refute it so I'll just call it retarded."

LOL. Even at The University of Ohio State though? -

That's a cute bunny -
Tobias FünkeOne thing to consider, even if Tressel got canned....it's not like there aren't going to have their pick of ten super-qualified coaches from across the country.
-
thedynasty1998Why is Pryor being discussed? This is all about Tressel's actions. People blaming Pryor for Tressel's misconduct just don't get IT.
-
passwordWith Pryor being brought in to the discussion, if Tressel is let go or decides to resign before the suspensions are over, which will happen. Do you play Pryor after his suspension or do you move on with a new quarterback and get ready for next season?

it depends on how the incumbent QB (ie the team), is doing at that point..5-0, let it ride- anything less, TP plays--JMO -
ksig489I think the "should Tressell be fired or not" decision by an OSU fan should be answered the following way:
Am I a Tressell fan first or an OSU fan first?
If I am a Tressell fan, then keep him because he is my favorite.
If I am an OSU fan, then I need to realize that this man has brought a ton of negativity to my beloved school and has potentially caused a great deal of harm to the football program and the athletic department. He has knowingly and willingly destroyed any integrity and respect OSU has and honestly didnt seem remorseful as he was caught in lie after lie. Regardless of what he has done for us in the past, he will carry an eternal black cloud over our program that will only go away when he does.
The big problem is that most OSU fans dont care about what Tressell has done, they just want to win.
The realization should be that OSU will have their pick of top coaches when he is gone and will still be able to recruit the upper echelon kids. They will have no problem winning double digit games a year and maybe, just maybe will be able to win that one game a year that kills their chances at the title with a new coach who isnt too conservative to win the big one. -
SportsAndLadyYou guys seriously think if were 5-0, Pryor is not going to play? lol no way
-
ksig489Pryor will play as soon as he comes back...same with the other guys. The schedule gets MUCH tougher at that point.
-
georgemc80I am willing to lay odds that JT will not be fired or forced to resign. If he does, I surmise an amazing buyout amount being given to him. They could fire him with cause, but I truly believe he is the fall guy. I really think this goes much much much deeper than a football coach. (Read: Board of Regents)
