But you're right..I shouldn't have added him in there.

If you don't believe that he is then you should not put him in there but you should have Tom Izzo above Williams,Donovan and Self.

So 3 examples in 27 years..and you wanted Self to do it a couple times in the mid 90s? Come on

I agree...I was just throwing in a few off the top of my head

DePaul had 18 NCAA appearances as an independent
Notre Dame had 25 as an independent

yeah that's Depaul and Notre Dame...this is Oral roberts, they just entered division 1 lol

Not to mention, independents were non existent from the 90s on

They were only NAIA for 2 years dude.

Whatever makes you feel better about the fact that Self was a .500 coach in his first gig
  • LJ

Notre Dame was still an independent until 1995. The early and mid 90's is when everyone joined up. The fact that they were still getting bids when Self was coaching at Oral Roberts makes your whole argument dumb.

Not sure why you quoted my post but I was just pointing out to S&L that independents still exist and they are not "non-existent".

    Thought it was him saying.....

    nvm my bad
  • SportsAndLady
non existent in the basketball world...obviously I know there are independents...not one of those teams is worth a damn nor relevant in NCAA basketball

And Notre Dame was getting bids in the early 90s because they're notre dame...this is oral roberst were talking about

And I'm not gonna feel good about anything...I could care less about this argument..i'm just bored on a saturday night

I have honestly never heard of any of the schools in that link.

You do realize this is an absolutely RIDICULOUS statement. There is no way an independent gets an at-large bid in today's era.

Didn't know that the early 90's while teams were still getting independent bids was "today's era"

Big Gain.......You say we needed more scoring not Lauderdale. Have you ever heard of the term defense? If we slowed them down more, scoring 60 points for OSU should be a win. But we couldn't stop them! Although they use the term mostly in football, Defense wins championships and offense wins games, this applies here. Especially when you are not scoring as well, you have to depend on your defense. Lauderdale should not have been on the bench that long! We were only outrebounded 31-30, but 18 rebs from UK came from Harrellson 6'10'' (10) and Jones 6'8'' (8). 16 of OSU rebounds came from Sully alone, the next was 6 from Craft who is 6'0'' generously! You telling me that Lauderdale would not have made a bigger impact. Harrellson and Jones on the floor is a mismatch for OSU with only Sullinger on the floor. Numbers don't lie!

Today's era, year 2011. It's NOT going to happen. Not with 346 D-1 teams and 31 automatic bids. It would take a team to come together with elite level talent, play a RIDICULOUS OOC schedule and manage to win 60% or more of those games. Otherwise, the RPI's and SOS's wouldn't get close.

THREE TEAMS who were Independents have had RPI's under 200 in the last 7 years. It's safe to say it's IMPOSSIBLE.

What the flying fuck does that have to do with what we are talking about. Bill Self coached an independent team from 93-97 and the team joined a league in 97. Who cares about 2011

Jared Sullinger just said live on the air during the Ohio High School basketball championship game that he is a man of his word and that he WILL be returning next year. Sounds like he really is coming back.

.Donovan just got outcoached by Brad Stevens,
That isn't what Brad Stevens said.

    Prescott;725980 wrote:That isn't what Brad Stevens said.

I saw that...obviously Stevens knows good professionalism and realizes that you don't patronize someone who has been in the final four 3 times and has done something he has never done--win a title.

Why are we discussing what Bill Self did at a charismatic christian school in the middle of nowhere in Oklahoma in the early 1990s?

Bill Self has gone to the Elite Eight with three different teams since 2000 -- the Tulsa Golden freaking Hurricane, Illinois and Kansas -- and has reached six Elite Eights overall. He coached the Jayhawks to a 37-2 record and national championship in 2008 and is playing for another Final Four birth tomorrow afternoon. He is a five-time finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year award and has two Big Ten title and seven Big XII titles to his credit.

    STFU.
