Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

That dunk evokes shades of Thunder Dan Majerle and Rex Chapman. Ill I think is the term for that.

Just watched the game from Sunday. I could not have been more impressed with Kendal Marshall than I was from watching. Wow. 16 assists and only 3 turnovers, the last a who cares call with only just over a minute left. So basically he had a 8 to 1 assist to turnover ratio, that is OUT OF THIS WORLD.

The 5 games, since the Tech debacle, 33 assists and only 14 TOs. He is becoming the next great PG in a LONG line of them down in Chapel Hill.

Haven't paid attention to Carolina at all this season. Is the entrance back into the coaches poll legit or is this being overhyped again?
  • wildcats20
Well they are, IMO, EASILY the 2nd best team in the ACC behind Dook. The ACC is the 5th ranked conference in the RPI, obviously a down year but 5th is not terrible. They have 5 losses, 4 of which are not considered bad losses. Even though the Illinois loss is looking worse and worse, it's still not a bad loss. InsideRPI(ESPN) ranking of 15th, SOS 20. Now, they really haven't beaten anyone of note outside of Kentucky, but that Kentucky win will go a long way. BC was RPI 44 when they dismantled them, but BC isn't very good.

I'd say where they are, 20th and 21st, is just about right.

Yeah, I don't think any reasonable Carolina fan thinks they're suddenly national title contenders, but they are becoming a solid basketball team. As wildcats said, the ACC is WAY down this season, but a 7-1 mark half way through league play is still pretty impressive. The next two games are going to be very tough at dook and at Clemson. After that, the Heels have three very winnable games against Wake, BC, and NC State. Wake is awful, and Carolina recently destroyed both BC and State, so those are games they should win. After that, they finish up with Maryland at home, FSU on the road, and dook at home, all of which will be tough tests.

After non-conference play was over, I was hopeful for a 20-10 regular season, but now I'm obviously hoping for better than that. We'll see what happens, but it'll just be nice to see this team heading back to the big dance and building for next season. I'm really enjoying watching the team progress, but I'm already excited for what we'll see from them next year, as long as Henson, Barnes, and Zeller stay in Chapel Hill. If those guys stick around, I really feel like Carolina will truly be Carolina once again. Not getting ahead of myself though...just gonna enjoy the ride for the rest of this year.

Really good Q&A from the Fayetteville Observer with Harrison.

I was thinking about posting that too, wildcats. Great read!

Harrison is a very well-spoken young man. It's great to see his hard work finally start to pay off. Hope he sticks around Chapel Hill for at least another season.

Sounds about right to me then if you look at numbers and never see a game. Which lets face it, no one voting has seen a game either. So it all makes sense lol. Sounds a bit like Xavier this year. Getting better, but no real amazing win to see if they are over the hump yet.

The tough loss at Cameron last night takes Carolina to 17-6 overall, and 7-2 in ACC play.

The Clemson game on Saturday is very important. A win gets the Heels back on track, and builds some confidence heading into a series of games where they will be heavily favored (Wake, BC, at State). However, a loss would drop them to 17-7, and would really be a confidence killer after the way the second half played out last night. I really see this as a pivotal game for the Heels. Littlejohn is an extremely tough place to play, and the Tigers have been great at home so far this season.

Gonna be interesting to see how the Tar Heels respond.

    Remaining schedule looks like this...

    Feb. 12 - @ Clemson
    Feb. 15 - Wake Forest
    Feb. 19 - Boston College
    Feb. 23 - @ NC State
    Feb. 27 - Maryland
    Mar. 2 - @ Florida State
Mar. 5 - Duke (spelled incorrectly for Ironman92)

Well, Carolina and Clemson set the game of basketball back a couple decades with a disgusting offensive effort today, but the Heels hit most of their FTs late and survived a last minute barrage of threes to win at Clemson, 64-62. Carolina is now 18-6, 8-2 ACC, and they have the easier part of their conference schedule coming up in the next three games. They'll have to be much better offensively, though, to make it through those contests unblemished.

Harrison Barnes led the Heels today with 20 points on 7 of 13 shooting. Kendall Marshall added 18 points, and was 10-11 from the free throw line, while John Henson came through with another double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Harrison had a sick spin, drop step 1 handed dunk.

We have no scorers at all; just no talent on the offensive side. With our Defense (on pace to be second lowest ppg in ACC in the shotclock era) we should win more but too many missed shots.

Carolina took down an awful Wake Forest team tonight by a score of 78-64. They are now 19-6, 9-2 ACC.

The Heels were horrendous from behind the arc, but they played well enough to win comfortably. Perimeter shooting has been a serious problem since the second half in Durham. Gonna have to start knocking down some of those open looks if they want to win down the road. They host BC on Saturday in what could be a very dangerous game. The Heels destroyed BC in Chestnut Hill by 32, but I have a feeling it'll be a tough game this time around.

Tyler Zeller led the Heels tonight with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Barnes added 17 points, and Henson continues to be a double-double machine, with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Leslie McDonald gave some bench production for a change with 13 points, and Kendall Marshall dished out 8 assists with only 2 turnovers.

I am just glad the game Saturday is in Chapel Hill. Crushing someone at home and then having to go to their place(a la OSU/Purdue this weekend) is NEVER a good thing.

Against my better judgment, I'm watching the game from earlier today. Carolina nearly blew a 15 point second half lead by scoring only nine points during the last 11 minutes of the game, but they did hang on to beat BC, 48-46. The Heels have been simply pathetic on the offensive end of the floor since the first half of the game in Durham, but they stand at 20-6, 10-2 ACC at the moment. Next up is NC State, but if the offensive woes continue, it might be a tough trip down the road to Raleigh.

The Heels took care of State on the road tonight, 75-63. Carolina still didn't shoot the ball very well, but they played pretty well defensively, and made some clutch shots down the stretch to finally put NCSU away. Carolina is now 21-6, 11-2 ACC. They'll host Maryland on Sunday at the Dean Dome as they begin the home stretch with three tough games against the Terps, Noles, and Blue Devils.

Barnes struggled mightily in the first half tonight, but he was HUGE in the second, finishing with 16 points and 8 boards. John Henson was a monster on the glass with 15 rebounds, and he also was also outstanding defensively with 6 blocks. Marshall had 14 points with 5 assists, Strickland played very well with 13 points, and Tyler Zeller added 11 points, despite being mugged the entire night.
  • wildcats20
Barnes had 2 really nice tip dunks basically back to back.

The last 3-4 minutes of that game were a real nice sight defensively.
  • ironman02
Tomorrow night's game against Maryland may have increased in importance tonight with VaTech's big win in Blacksburg. The Heels are now tied for 1st place in the loss column in the ACC standings, and if they can take care of business against the Terps and Noles (much easier said than done), they'll get to battle heads-up with Duke for first place in the ACC regular season.

Maryland definitely worries me, probably more than FSU (who is without Singleton). Jordan Williams could really give the Heels problems in the paint, and Sweaty Gary always has his teams ready for Carolina. Should be a good one.

There is now a tie for 1st place in the ACC. Carolina defeated Maryland by a score of 87-76 tonight to move to 22-6 overall and 12-2 in ACC play.

The Heels opened up a 12-point lead at the half, stretched it to as many as 17 in the second half, and eventually got the win after sleepwalking through the final few minutes of the game. Tyler Zeller exploded with 25 points to lead Carolina, while Barnes added 21 points as well. Leslie McDonald stepped up off the bench to add 15 points, John Henson chipped in 10 to go with 15 boards and 7 blocks, and Kendall Marshall dished out 10 assists.

The Tar Heels will travel to FSU on Wednesday for their final game before the season finale with Duke.

That is not entirely true, Stephen Glass. In fact, since Duke and Carolina are even at 12-2 apiece in the ACC and Duke holds the head-to-head tie-breaker, it's not even partially true. Duke is in sole possession of first place of the ACC regular-season Cloth Award race.

Even if it were true, I believe this award you are after:

The "champion" banners are handed out the following weekend at the Duke Invitational.

Jiminy Cricket is the Walt Disney version of "The Talking Cricket", a fictional character created by Carlo Collodi for his classic novel Pinocchio, which was adapted into an animated film by Walt Disney in 1940. Originally an unnamed, minor character in Collodi's novel, he was translated in the Disney version into a comical and wise partner who accompanies Pinocchio on his adventures.
