Ohio State 2011 Off-Season Discussion

From what I have heard, we have 17 available schollies from graduating seniors plus 1 left over from last year putting us at 18. With Wells and Carter gone, we are now officially at 20. With Martin still considering a transfer and Rod Smith having to go to JUCO, that could grow by the end of the summer. Then factor in transfers after the season and anyone who leaves early. We will for sure be sitting with at least 22 and probably more.OneBuckeye;396238 wrote:On side note... Keith Wells and Duron are gone with means 2 more Scholarships for 2011 or 2012. I am willing to bet Cordale Jones will get one of those scholarships.
Jones could very well end up with an offer but not until after the season I would guess. The staff will (and should IMO) see how other guys shake out first. -
OneBuckeyeI thought we had 22 before carter and wells, now we may have 25. Article from DL
For several months now we have been talking about how the Buckeyes were going to get all these elite players into this recruiting class and who might get left out.
We have talked about the Glenville pair, Shane Wynn and Aundrey Walker. How could they wait until after the season and do this the "Glenville Way" when there were great players looking to verbal early? I have it from multiple sources that the staff would like to take two quarterbacks in this class so Cardale Jones could still make it in. My response has been, where does he fit in? How does he fit in? We may be seeing why right now.
The Buckeyes are looking at spots opening up. There has been a rumor that Jermil Martin will leave. Many believe he still will. Count me amongst them. We have all heard about the tragic news about Jamel Turner by now. I think I speak for all of us when I say I hope that young man gets the message that the way he is living and the company he is keeping can get terminal quickly.
The hard truth is Turner's football career is over. This is not a major car accident where bones and ligaments get broken and torn. This is at least five bullets hitting his body, tearing muscle and puncturing organs. I hope that he can get back to the football field but I can't see that happening. Rebuilding his body is going to take so much time, if it is at all possible, that the opportunity will have passed him by. He is definitely not going to be on scholarship this year. He is not academically eligible anyway.
You know that Keith Wells has left the program. The breaking news is Duron Carter has flunked out of school. He is enrolling at Coffeyville Community College with the intention of coming back next year. He is an immense talent but is very immature. Let's hope he makes it. For right now, it means another scholarship for Jim Tressel to use.
They may have another to use. Well, "borrow" would be a better term. We still don't know about super running back Rod Smith. Ohio State may be finding a place at Fork Union for him. The coaching staff will have to make a determination on that. I think you have to go with what he wants. You don't want him on the open market and not real happy with the coaching staff.
No matter what breaks, it looks like the Buckeyes could go a full 25 in this recruiting class. The projections so far have been based on 20-22. I think about banking a few for 2012 where the class is at least as good and could be better, but if using 25 gets Cardale Jones in this class, I will worry about 2012 in 2011.

OneBuckeyeRon Tanner and Nick Vannett are expected to commit to OSU before th 4th. Also Donavan Clark OT from autstintown is close to an offer from camp.
-
OneBuckeyeOsu got their first 2012 commit from josh perry today.
-
purple_reinPerry and Vannett on board. Tanner announcing on Friday. Should go down as a great week.
-
WriterbuckeyeCardale Jones won't be sniffing an offer unless his grades are better, by all accounts. Even then, OSU may decide it has a QB for this class and will want to use the scholarship on another.
By the way, a reporter asked JT if Rod Smith would at OSU this fall and he said yes. He had a class to finish up this summer, but he would be joining the team in the fall. -
QuintThat's awesome about Rod Smith! If that guy plays the way he looks. . . he'll be a beast.
-
OneBuckeyeTanner is on board. It will be awhile before anyone else commits me thinks.
-
dat dude
-
OneBuckeyeOSU is now leading for DePriest. They have made up a lot of ground on Bama.
-
OneBuckeyeWarren Ball 2012 RB may be commiting soon...
-
devil1197Smith will probably be RS'ed imo as OSU just has too much talent at RB right now to waste a year.
Saine is the #1 RB with Herron, Berry, and Hall. Then add in Hyde too along, we're stacked at RB.
Getting Priest would be great, wonder if Miller has been talking to him. -

Don't confuse depth with stacked. Unless someone separates themselves as the #1 guy, I don't think you can say stacked if you don't have one guy who stands out amongst the pack. I really think Saine has what it takes to be the guy, but I just hope it's someone. -
0311sdpI don't think Smith will be redshirted, because if he is as good as advertised he will play only 3 years and turn pro. If you reshirt him you get only 2 years. I just hope he has his grades straightened out and is ready to go this fall. I agree with the previous comment about confusing depth with stacked, if no one steps up then you just have a bunch of average guys, which I don't think will be the case.
-
OneBuckeyeSmith will be red shirted. He won't show up until the fall so he will be behind all the other freshman who enrolled for the summer/winter. If he doesn't red shirt Hyde or Hall will. I think two of them may red shirt at least one will, it would not make sense not to.

Saine is the #1 guy, that's been known for some time now.
Smith should be the one redshirted as he'll be behind on learning the offense. He wouldn't get too many reps anyhow as Saine is going to have a very good year with more touches than any RB. -
0311sdpI agree with you that Saine is #1 and if he stays healthy should have a great year,-----but neither he nor Boom have proven to be durable enough to be the man in the past, so I think up to 3 guys will get some carries, and I still think if you redshirt Smith you're just throwing a year away even though he will as you say be way behind in learning the offense. (someone will transfer out after this season)

dat dudeNot necessarily recruiting news, but, as expected, Jermil Martin has decided to transfer. Martin cites lack of playing time for his reason.

Saw that yesterday. Can't say it really hurts OSU. As Tressel said, he's sort of a tweener and there is just better talent in front of him. -
SpeedofsandI think he is going to YSU

Good for Martin as he will get playing time somewhere else. He just wasn't going to pass over Saine, Herron, Berry, and Hall then have to worry about the new guys like Hyde and Smith. -
dat dudeSomewhat old news, but Ejuan Price was on campus for OSU's media day on Sunday. He is expected to commit soon.

se-alumGlenville and Cardale Jones are playing on ESPN right now.

vball10set
you better confirm that with LHSGUY35, because if it doesn't go through him, then it won't get done---you do know that he's the self-ordained conduit between YSU and all recruits, right ?Speedofsand;441505 wrote:I think he is going to YSU
btw, he went to Xavier too !!! -
Tigerfan00I heard that LHS has done some coaching in his day, is that true?
