Heisman Race (Season long thread)

  • Non

Front-runner - Denard Robinson, QB, Michigan
...The first two Saturday afternoons have been the Denard Robinson show. Doesn't mean he will win it. Remember Jacory Harris created a lot of buzz early last year. But so far, Robinson has been the single most dynamic player.
...29 carries, 197 yards and 1 TD in the win over UConn, and 19-for-22 passing for 186 yards and 1 TD
...28 carries, 252 yards and 2 TDs in the win over Notre Dame, and 24-for-40 passing for 244 yards and 1 TD

    2. Terrelle Pryor, QB, Ohio State
...The circumstances are right for Pryor to remain in the discussion as one of the top candidates all season long. He really just has to be pretty good with the Buckeyes continuing to win and he'll be in the Top 3. His first two performances may not have had the wow factor but it looks like he's made some strides as an all-around QB.
...17-for-25 passing for 247 yards and 3 TDs in the win over Marshall
...20 carries for 113 yards and 1 TD in the win over Miami, and 12-for-27 passing for 233 yards and 1 TD

    3. Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State
...Close call between Pryor and Moore for No. 2. I think if we did this last week Moore would've been ahead but just having the week off and Pryor playing in a big game and his second game of the year was enough to put him slightly above.
...23-for-38 passing for 215 yards and 3 TDs in the win over Virginia Tech, including the GW touchdown pass with 1:14 left

    4. Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
...His Heisman chances are diminishing with the return of Mark Ingram but as of right now he's been a key performer on the top-ranked team.
...22 carries for 144 yards and 1 TD in the win over Penn State, and four receptions for 46 yards
...10 carries for 66 yards and 2 TD in the win over San Jose State, and three receptions for 46 yards

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Others:

    *Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
...He started at No. 1 as the reigning Heisman winner and even though he's been out the first few games I don't think he should be taken off the radar. Alabama could still have 11 more games, including the SEC Championship, and big games against Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina, LSU, Auburn.

    Andy Dalton, QB, TCU
...This guy has been around forever, engineering the TCU offense. Nice start to the season.
...64 yards rushing and 2 TDs in the win over Oregon State, and 17-for-27 passing for 175 yards and 1 TD

    Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
...He's averaged 350 yards passing in the first two games, but that was against the likes of Tennessee Tech and Louisiana-Monroe. Mallett's Heisman campaign could end before it begins over the next two weeks when the Razorbacks visit Georgia and then host Alabama.

    Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
...Without Toby Gerhart, the Stanford offense is relying heavily on Luck. He's carried them to two easy wins over Sacramento State and UCLA, passing for 467 yards, 6 TDs and 0 INTs.

    Case Keenum, QB, Houston
...He hasn't had a great year so far, despite Houston starting off 2-0. Only 5 TDs and 3 INTs and he got knocked out of the game against UTEP. But he can put up big numbers in a hurry in that offense. They have some tough games against UCLA, Mississippi State, Tulsa and Texas Tech but none that are improbable.

    Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
...Broke out in the win over Florida State. He completed 30 for 40 passes for 380 yards and 4 TDs.

    DeMarco Murray, RB, Oklahoma
...Often injured but an explosive gamebreaking talent when he's on the field. He had 64 yards rushing and 2 TDs in the win over Florida State and caught four passes for 52 yards.

    Greg McElroy, QB, Alabama
...He has a chance when you consider that Ingram missed two games and if they go on to run the table again, people can point to him as being the constant in the offensive lineup from start to finish. He has been efficient so far, 29-for-40 passing (72 percent) for 447 yards, 3 TD and 0 INT.

    Stephen Garcia, QB, South Carolina
...Statistically he hasn't done enough to put him in the discussion yet. Running back Marcus Lattimore was the bigger offensive force in the win against Georgia but if South Carolina continues to win in the tough SEC he'll get some extra credit for just being the leader on a team that wins big games.

No way Ingram should even be in the discussion at this point. He's a good player, but he's not going to win the Heisman after missing 2 of the biggest games of the season.
  • dave
yeah those 2 he missed were HUGE. lmao

dave;485058 wrote:yeah those 2 he missed were HUGE. lmao

Not if he goes crazy the rest of the season and rushes over 200-250 yards a game.
Heisman talk shouldn't even be started until at the very least October. There is insufficient data to make a clear case for the award yet.

You can't miss 2 full games and win the heisman period, there will always be someone who played just as hard for 12 games. Second, Ingram won't rush for 200 or even 100 every remaining game with Richardson. Third, Tate had the same hype at the beginning of the season last year, I think D Rob has a better chance of being much much better, he cannot be carrying the ball as much as he has against UCONN and ND and not get hurt. He will slow down or get hurt eventually and will not win the heisman. Finally, I don't think anyone other than DRob has put up heisman like performances or stats in big games, other than the entire OU offense. I think Ryan Mallet will end up showing he is the best QB in the nation with some big wins in the SEC and he should probably win it. If OSU goes undefeated, Pryor will win if he has decent stats at all.

Penn State is probably the best team they'll play til their bowl game. Normally I'd say Florida would be a tough team, but they can't even get a snap from center, what a joke!

I agree with your top 3 ... one dark horse to add to the mix: South Carolina freshman RB Marcus Lattimore. He has rushed for 236 yards in two games, the Gamecocks are ranked #13 in the AP and #16 in the Coaches Poll, and this kid has the makings of a great one. If he can do it once the SEC schedule rolls around, he will get a lot of love nationally.

    2-10. Everybody else.

But a LONG ways to go.

I agree with that, a little surprised to see the South Carolina QB listed rather than Lattimore. Lattimore is pretty much their entire offense. Though, I'm not sure if the SC line is good enough for him to rack up big numbers during the SEC season...

I think it's premature to even have a Heisman list after two weeks, but no more ridiculous than having Moore in the top 3. I don't care what his numbers are, he's not that great of a QB. He's scrappy, sees the field well and can hit wide open guys, but he has one of the weakest arms I've seen out of a so called big time QB. His balls have the wounded duck look that Justin Zwick's passes had at OSU. Moore will more than likely make it as a Heisman Finalist, if not win the reward, but that'll be more due to the weak opposition than anything else. His stats are a product of a solid all around offense and a very weak schedule. Though, if the goal is to predict the actual finalists, Moore is a good choice...

Bama most likely will play in the sec championship, so it's really only 1 game. nobody is going to care that he missed the first 2 if he shows throughout the year he is the best player in the country.

Ingram is a great player. He's an Emmitt Smith clone IMO.

I think he could have several clutch performances still. There are a lot of opportunities against teams like Arkansas, Florida, LSU, South Carolina and possibly the SEC Championship.

You have a great player who has already won the Heisman on the No. 1 team with still a lot of primetime games left, there's a chance he can get back in there.

I agree, this discussion is a bit premature. Many things will change in the next few weeks.

    Randall Cobb, Kentucky.

Best offensive player in the SEC.
  • GOONx19
^ He'll never get credit because they spread his role too much. No single combined yardage stat really jumps off the page. His averages, though, are crazy for a team's number one option.

16.7 yards per catch, 1 TD
25 yards per return, 1 TD
13 yards per rush, 1 TD
17 yards per pass, 1 TD

If Cobb played for a top ten team he would be a favorite, no doubt.

He and Demps are right there together for the most exciting player...but I do agree that Cobb is the best overall football player in the SEC

    Mine:

    1.Denard Robinson
    2.Kellen Moore

Those are really the only two that belong in the discussion so far

I kind of agree with this. After two games based solely on performance and not preseason hype, Robinson would run away with it after they gave the award out now. Honestly, I doubt he'll be there at the end of the year because I think a guy his size can't keep up what he's doing and I think he'll likely get hurt and miss a few games at some point, but right now, he's running away with it.

    Terrelle Pryor? Really?

    1 - Denard Robinson

    2 - Kellen Moore

    3 - ?
  • vball10set
LOL--you make it too easy....kind of tough thinking for yourself, eh??
  • sjmvsfscs08
    Huh?

He completed 44% of his passes against Miami. Ouch. He still cannot throw the ball very well. He's gone from below average to slightly above average.

Now he's an impeccable athlete, but with Ohio State's talented weapons he simply doesn't do enough above and beyond to warrant anything near a Heisman right now. You've just got to go into it thinking "Okay, he's the starting quarterback for a terrific team, excellent running backs and a monstrous/dominant offensive line. What does he do to really stand out? Has he won this team any games solely based on his performance? Has he wowed the crowd with amazing plays or something?" The answer is "No, not really." He's thrown some nice deep balls to open receivers while defenses favor the run, and he's made a few plays with his feet. Absolutely nothing remarkable yet, unless you count checking down to receivers and still not being able to throw to routs other than a post/go/slant consistently as remarkable. So after week two, in my opinion, he does not deserve such a lofty ranking.

I really liked the wheel route touchdown pass to Saine (right?) and the touchdown run. Other than that, what has he done, honestly?

He's 2-0, unlike Notre Dame, which will go 6-6 at best and by the way lost to a hapless and depleted Michigan team; Terrelle's excrement could score on Michigan's defense. You're just jealous of him, and Notre Dame fans shouldn't have any opinion on the Heisman, they haven't won one in my lifetime. Ohio State will go 12-0 and Terrelle Pryor will win the Heisman this year, and next year. He will then tear off your head and piss on you for such insolence, and you can take that to the bank.

Figured I'd get his response out of the way...

Not turned the ball over, which IMO was his biggest weakness, and keeping his team undefeated and ranked #2.
However, since this thread asks "after two weeks", I admit that I have to agree that based on the first two games, Robinson has been sensational, and if you were to project his numbers over the entire season, noone else should even bother making the trip to New York. But, as we all know, it's not about projections....
  • sjmvsfscs08
It isn't about projections, but it isn't about "hasn't turned the ball over" either. If anything, that aids my argument. He's not needed to win games for his team, he can hand the ball off and get nice looks from defenses' attempting to stop the run. He doesn't need to make crucial throws or carry a team, of course he won't turn the ball over.
  • vball10set
