Nebraska to Join the Big 10

bigkahunaI just saw on ESPN that Big 12 Commissioner expects Nebraska to announce the switch as early as Friday.
I didn't see a thread specifically about this, if there is one I apologize. -

I hope so. The Big 10 really seems oblivious to the fact that the Pac-10 just became a player. They are going to have to speed up this process a little more than they would have liked. -

I don't think so. If there is a chance to get into the Big 10 over the PAC 10 or others...you put the others on hold. Coin is king and no other has more than the Big 10. -

There are supposed deadlines. The Big 10 has to realize that. They can't just leave Nebraska hanging. They are going to have to get things in gear. I don't doubt it will happen though. -

They know what they're doing. Nebraska may be saying publicly they've not gotten the official offer, but I don't believe that. There's a lot still going on. Add Nebraska first, then I see a 16 team super conference. Add ND, they could easily stick with 12. But I see a 16ner.

I wouldn't want to see the conference grow past 14. 16 seems like way too many. Plus the teams you would have to add to make that happen would only water down the competition.

The Big Ten doesn't formally extend invitation, they accept applications. If the Big Ten does invite anyone it would be through the back door. Basically the Big Ten needs to tell Nebraska that they're in behind closed doors, then Nebraska needs to come out publicly and request to be in, and then they'll be added.
And all that we know is that a decision is expected from Nebraska as early as Friday as to whether or not they are jumping to the Big Ten. The Big XII has imposed an ultimatum to them with Friday (really next Tuesday) as the deadline (I'm not sure how it's an ultimatum though, because if Nebraska says "we're not sure yet" by the deadline the Big XII isn't going to kick them out or do anything).
I think the big issue for the Big Ten right no may be that even though they have accelerated their time line, they need to realize that not everyone involved is on the same time line. The Pac-10 is on a different time line, the Big XI is on a different time line, and Nebraska is on a different time line. Nebraska's board is meeting this Friday and if they feel like they need to make a decision at that time then they will need a guarantee of acceptance from the Big Ten in order to make the move. It's possible that the Big Ten is farther along in the process than we realize and they have also said that any vote can be done though email or telephone so it shouldn't be a big issue.
It is kind of ironic that the Big Ten set the tone and seemed like the movers and shakers and the conference that would set the curve, and now they may end up getting left behind a bit.
I'm also confused how passive the Big XII has been during all of this. It just baffles me that they didn't become proactive about adding teams when the Big Ten and Pac-10 announced expansion plans. They seem perfectly content as a conference to dissolve and be absorbed by other new super conferences. -

Assuming ND maintains its arrogant stance and stays put (and irrelevant), I'd like to see Nebraska, Missouri and one other school added (perhaps Rutgers). I'm also making the assumption that because they have to go as a group, all the Texas schools will end up in the PAC 10 basically as their own division.
If they decide to go on to 16, then the real fun begins, because I believe it opens the door for the Big Ten to explore moving south a bit into Maryland and/or Virginia. -

So let's say Nebraska joins the Big 10 between Friday and Tuesday. Are they in the Big 10 this coming season for football/all sports in general? Or is there some sort of time line (season after this, etc)

Only thing I've heard is that 2011 (fall) will be their first football season in the B10. Not sure on other sports but I don't see why Fall 2011 can't be the official start for all Neb sports -

You made a lot of good points. The only thing I would say about your last statement is really, what else could they do? Who could they have invited that was going to make the conference better or more lucrative whether they were going to lose teams or not. Nobody is going to leave any other major conference to go to the Big XII and adding good football teams from small schools/conoferences or schools that don't make money doesn't help anyone already in the conference.
Texas is the only team with little to gain, but that doesn't mean they don't have a lot to lose. It may not make a difference NOW, but over time, Texas would be tremendously impacted by the Big XII's major players moving somewhere else. So, they still need to ensure they are in the best situation for the future and that doesn't include mingling again with TCUs and Houstons.
For everyone else, they are instantly going to improve their situation, as well as be better equipped long term. -

Of all the teams mentioned for addition to the Big 10. ND and Texas are the only two that stand not to improve their situations dramatically, at least short term. Long term I think if they didn't join NOW, they'd be kicking themselves. As a fan of the Big 10, these two would be my first choices, any and all others would basically be irrelevant.
And, maax, you bring up something about the BXII sitting on their hands...interestingly enough, you have the Big 10 courting Texas, Mizzou, Nebraska...but not in the least Kansas, who would add a lot basketball wise. This only illustrates that the Big 10 is only interested in money, football and academics (probably in that order) -

NO thanks on Texas. You see what they're doing to the Big XII? They already have their Longhorn Sports Network in the works, what makes you think they wouldn't just collect Big Ten NEtwork money on the side of their monster LSN? -

They'd likely be able to keep LSN, as it's university specific, not conference specific. I don't see what the issue there would be. I would take Texas in a heartbeat.
