Nebraska to Join the Big 10
-
Manhattan BuckeyeI think many folks are overly concerned about Michigan's current position and sway going forward. They've had a rough few years, and there is some evidence that it may get a lot rougher. The great recession hit Michigan harder than any other area and the university will undoubtedly feel some effects, the university has a good academic reputation but not a reputation of being a place where people want to go. Many alums I know hated their time there. Its local recruiting base pales in comparison with OSU and PSU, and the program depends heavily on national recruiting. At some point having cool uniforms and a good fight song only gets you so far. IMO the sooner they get rid of R-Rod the better, but look how far Michigan basketball has fallen from the '89 championship and 5 frosh starters, that type of program could turn into the Michigan football situation.

If they play eight conference games, they can have Southern Cal and Navy continue. They probably have to say goodbye to the Boston College series (fine by me) if they wanted two different games each year.
If Nebraska, Missouri, and Notre Dame joined:
East Division
Indiana
Michigan
Michigan State
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Penn State
Purdue
West Division
Illinois
Iowa
Minnesota
Missouri
Nebraska
Northwestern
Wisconsin
Now obviously the East Division is loaded, but the Big Ten has enjoyed solid parity recently. Yes, Ohio State has basically dominated the conference, but since 1996 there have only been three years in which the Big Ten champion went undefeated in conference play.
i don't have a horse in this race but this would be pretty cool. the east is loaded and that west division is the true definition of smash mouth -

hoops23I love the addition of Nebraska. They stink in basketball, but they're a traditional power who is back on the rise in football.
Very, very, good pick up for the Big Ten.
(who ironically has 12 teams now while the Big 12 doesn't.) -
killdeerwithout being redundant...this completely changes the face of college sports...primarily football;
the Big 12 is essentially over...
the survivors will run to the Big "10" or the PAC
and the most delicious and wonderful thing...
Notre Dame is left in the cold, and becomes more and more irrelevant every year.
and they only have themselves to blame for their exclusionary and elitist philosophy which has doomed them.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah. hahahaha. ha. -

killdeerI knew that would get the attention of the Blind faithful.

killdeerin other words, debate what everyone knows to be true, instead of rolling a ridiculous "LOL" meme out there.
ND had the world at their feet...they threw it away because they promoted their elitist philosophy just long enough to alienate most.
ND fans...save your alma mater from themselves.
They are clearly lost. -
karen lotzIf by everyone you mean bucknutz, then yes you are right and in that case it wouldn't be worth debating.

LMAO.......ND left in the could? Who came begging ND to join their conference yet again........the Big 10! If ND is irrelevant then what does that make the Big 10?
BTW, how is the Big 12 over? They lost ONE team which can be easily replaced by someone like TCU. If the Big 10 sticks to just adding one team, which is the smart thing to do, college football will not change forever. The Pac 10 will back down. -

You're serious, elitist philosophy? Again, the Big 10 can be seen in that light too, they denied ND membership years ago and it has come back to bite them in the ass! They could lose every game they play for the next 10 years and ND would still have, and will forever have the world at it's feet, get used to it because that will never change! -

All of those teams except Illinois had more yards passing than rushing and half of them had twice as many passing yards. Wisconsin was the best rushing team, but even they were balanced. And though Illinois had a lot of rushing yards, didn't they run out of some type of spread?
Is the new "definition" of smashmouth football averaging 130-140 yards rushing a game? -

Did you really just say Nebraska can easily be replaced by TCU? Seriously? -
vball10setI like the idea of Nebraska coming into the Big Ten....and,IMO,the only team in the country who could successfully pull off the "independent" status is Texas--if they chose to do so. That being said,I would welcome ND with open arms, and I believe if they don't accept the invitation, they could find themselves on the outside looking in when the Big East gets cut up and absorbed by other conferences. No time like the present,Irish.

Yes I did and what's wrong with that? TCU has been a very good program the past few years, membership in the Big 12 would only enhance that, plus geographically it makes sense with the other Texas schools. BTW, TCU would have given Nebraska all they wanted and more the past few seasons. -

Who said the Big East is getting cut up and absorbed? This is all speculation, I mean a month ago Missouri was a lock to join the Big 10.......what happened with that?
As for Texas as an independent, they might be able to do it but, what about their other sports programs if the Big 12 is no more........same choice ND would face with th Big East. IMO, it doesn't matter because I believe the Big 10 will not expand beyond 12 teams which puts an end to the stupid idea of these "mega" conferences.
For the last time, ND will not be on the outside looking in, they're just fine and always will be. -

Few years vs. One of the top 5 (Top 3 maybe?) winningest teams of all time.rock_knutne;385274 wrote:Yes I did and what's wrong with that? TCU has been a very good program the past few years
Geographically, Texas State Community College makes sense too. TCU has around 8,000 students and play in a 40,000 seat stadium that they can't sell out. They actually did sell out one game last year...during an undefeated season...but the next closest one was 2006. Nebraska has around 25,000 students, is the only show in town, has the longest sellout streak in the nation at over 300 games, and offers a national name and following.plus geographically it makes sense with the other Texas schools.
TCU would have given plenty of teams all they wanted and more...and they did. They're still riding 15 minutes of fame at this point. They will never be able to even sniff half the amount of success the OSU, OU, Tex, Nebraska, ND, PSU, Mich, USC's have been able to acheive.BTW, TCU would have given Nebraska all they wanted and more the past few seasons.
I'd hate to even look at what kind of revenue they would be able to bring in. I imagine it is aweful. -
enigmaaxAside from the financials (which is obviously the most important factor today), I'll remind everyone of the last 30 or so years that TCU was in the SWC. You can count on one hand the number of winning seasons or the number of bowl games. They dropped to a LOWER LEVEL and have been successful. That doesn't mean that they are all of a sudden a legitimate week-in, week-out, year-in, year-out national title contender or even major conference contender.

jordo212000I got a good laugh at the guy who suggests that TCU can easily replace Nebraska haha

all I was doing was "speculating",just like you...can we fans of anyone other than ND express an opinion--please? and,IMHO, ND will be fine--as long as they join a conference -

LMAO, I didn't know that 6-6 type seasons were the new standard at ND. Always will be? What's their bowl record the past 20 years? You humor me kid. Have fun scheduling BGSU and Western Kentucky because all the BCS schools will be busy playing in their mega conferences. -
j_crazyCorrect me if I'm wrong but are we ASSUMING that Missouri comes to the B10 as well?? I've not seen anything that suggests they are a lock.
also, the B10 might get Nebraska (and Missouri, and 3 other teams to make it an even 16), but the Pac 10 wins, IMO. -
norwalkI love the fact that Nebraska and Missouri may be joining the Big Ten. I think Missouri would benefit greatly in recruiting. I also think Nebraska will be hurt big time in recruiting. I believe (and just speculation) that they get a lot of talent from Texas. Which those players are more likely to go to Nebraska since they play games in Texas and more regional. Are they going to go to Nebraska when all of their games are east of the Mississippi? I think they will lose out on some recruits that they would of had in the past.

krambmanthe_system;384561 wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if it happens next season (2011). I think the Big 12 has it worked out that if you leave you sacrifice 50% of your revenue for 2 years or 90% of your revenue for a one year notice. Nebraska made around $9 million in revenue from the B12, so losing 90% of that would be $8.1 million they are out. But if they joined the big 10 the following year they would be up because they could potentially bring in ~$25 or so and more than make up for it. If they waited 2 years it would be 4.5 mil both years they would be out.
I think it all comes down to scheduling and when the B10 is ready for them. Just another detail that needs to be worked out.
You're correct that they would have to pay if they left the conference, however, with at least 8 teams likely leaving the conference, it's far more likely that the conference will vote to disband, which means that no one will have to pay anything for leaving.
