2010-2011 Orrville Red Rider Basketball

Mr. RussellBRF, You have been right all year about TJ too. Played against him in summer league, and grew up best of friends with his brother (who also got the raw deal). TJ has game. I just wonder why everybody loved Jordan Ray so much and not TJ Mitchell?
-
Bloody MaryMr. Russell, why don't you stay on the Wayne County League or Smithville threads and quit worrying so much about Orrville? Smithville couldn't win the District last year when we came in and couldn't get out of Regionals before that, which we did in our first year back in Division III and you are clearly jealous of our success! The Smithies might have gotten out of the Regionals with Jim Frizell as their coach and the rest of his coaching staff from this year. Also, the Smithies may have reached Columbus with Alex Bates as the starting guard because he is clearly a better player than his older brother already, even as a Sophmore. You don't even know about Orrville's Basketball program anymore and need to direct your attention to the Wayne County League or Smithville!

KardiacKidsI've been to several Orrville Games this year and i'm tryin to figure out why the coach is more worried about hurting someone's feelings than winning........he is watchin the same game the rest of us are is he not?.........Why have you not let Smith Neer and Lichti play yet? I could see if you had a good team to let these kids develop with the JVS more but...........

Interest is up after last year, so are numbers. With increased numbers come some tough choices. I think this year will help coach in the long run. Gotta put the best kids on the floor, shouldn't matter what grade they're in or who they might be taking minutes from.
So we're 4-7....what's a realistic outcome for this team over the last 9 games? A quick look at the schedule and I say that 10-10 is not only realistic, but about the best we can hope for.
Rest of our schedule is as follows...and my predictions.
@ west holmes (should be a win, but we didn't beat them at home)
ashland (win)
@ clear fork (1 pt loss in OT at home....at their place wont be fun)....right now I'd say Loss
Triway (who knows...they seem to be improving, but we have so much more size than them)...Win
@ Lexington (we never play good there)...Loss
Northwestern (McKean is a shooter we'd love to have)..tossup
Madison (at home)...Win
@ Wadsworth (???)...Loss
Wooster...Win
5 wins, 3 losses, 1 tossup...I think the CF game could be a tossup too. -
CCRollyYou should've put a note next to the Wooster game that says, "Yeah...we were down 20 late in the 4th quarter but this is a definite win the next time"

Mr. RussellI love how posters with two posts, get extremely defensive and personal, when I try asking a legit question, to people who I who I am, also to whom I have talked to many in person. Oh well haha. Thanks for the comments about my bro Bloody Mary, hopefully next week isn't so bloody and that time of the month is over.

I would take any combination of two who have been shooting good in practice of Mitchell, Groves, Turner (forgot to mention him previously) and Near (I'm not sold on Landis for varsity yet) and take the ball up court LOOKING TO SHOOT FROM THE OUTSIDE FIRST. Let the 2-3 zone collapse all it wants. Let our "bigs" hustle for the rebounds on any missed shots and muscle them back up (and then hit the FT, too). The bigs would need to forget about posting up for the inside pass, for awhile.
BRF out!
I like the thought. Time to try something new. I'd also press more, try to get some easy buckets. The guards are taking some heat on the offensive side of the ball, but they are all quick and can pressure the ball. As far as moving kids up, be careful, There is a big difference in talent level from JV to Varsity. One thing that did bother me though was getting outrebounded by Wooster. Maybe I read it wrong but with our big men that should never happen. -
Wooster All-SportAlmost all local boy's team have been very inconsisent this season. How does Wooster whip Orrvill ena dthen lose to a really down Triway team. My take on Orrville is that they kinda play selfish with to many guys lookin to shoot. Get the ball in to the big guys for crying out loud. You have 6 ft9, 6ft6 and 6ft 5 but little guards are jacking up shots left and right. Just my take and I haven't seen a lot of Orr games. In genral Orrville has lots of talent but isn't meshing at all.
-
BRFI agree with some of the stuff that the previous poster said after reading through it and cringing......did I see "in genral" from a Wooster poster? Ha ha ha ha!
BRF isn't one to make predictions, but now he is going to say that we go into the tournament at 10-10 or maybe even 9-11, heaven forbid, AND MAKE SOME NOISE! -

Well after seeing them play all season I was hoping our guards would shoot the ball more and still do, you must have seen the Wooster game when they were down by 20 and started to shoot outside, but we have lacked outside shooting all season and most on the floor haven't been shooting but rather trying lob passes inside to double and triple teams and making more turnovers than assists. Our guards lack outside shots and some don't even look to shoot so I don't see selfish guards just no playmaking, driving ability, or leadership from them, they can't get the ball to our bigs or draw coverage away from them.
Go BUCKEYES, big win tonight -
OQBExactly, I would like to see the guards shoot more outside, and let our bigs get a rebound and put back....maybe that would work better than trying to lob a pass into double and triple teams. heck the bigs could ateast draw a foul. I say the guards are looking to pass, then pass, then shoot.
I really liked this lineup when we play:
Wasson
Winters
Pirman
Brenner
Turner
Two extremely fast and athletic guards who imo played some great defense against Senior, and can create mismatches. Three bigs to try to get the ball into and if not open take a shot and work for the offensive board. Senior's PG was killing us until we put Turner in, then he got pick pocketed a few times and never was the same player. I also liked the Neer kid on JV, he looks like a basketball player and actually has a decent jumpshot, I say you have to give it a try at this point....the players have had long enough to prove they can win, and they haven't done much. -
RedRider1Massillon's coach called McKinley's style "bricking and boarding"...meaning they use their height & athleticism to crash the offensive boards and get putbacks or get fouled.
Why can't this work for us?
Our shooting isn't so good, so we've got the "bricking" concept figured out....
I do like starting to press more...we always like to think we're the more athletic team, so let's press and create some turnovers (to offset our own at the very least).
Lets use our size (which we have) and quickness (ditto) to our advantage. -
Riderwannabecause Orrvile is no good, except for Wasson.
-
BRFI like the "brick and board" approach.

That's a little cold.
Nobody is happy right now, coaches included. Let's trust they're working their tail off trying to find the right mix to put this team in the best position possible.
Can't go to state every year. Both games this weekend are winnable...let's start there. -
Red Zone^^^Agreed RR1....The boys and coaches are working hard. It just hasn't come together this season. On the bright side, these next two games are winnable with our size and it might be something to build on. A better defense also helps a struggling offence. Pressing more will help but we may need to adjust your line up (not as many bigs). Good Luck this weekend Riders!!!

Series62The coach starts and plays Ray, who is reluctant to shoot and has been commiting too many turnovers.
Perhaps he should try Mitchell, who is a better shooter, ball handler, is faster and displays more confidence!
Wasson and Pirman aren't ball handlers or 3-point shooters, how can they get rebounds playing the perimeter and jacking 3's?
Someone needs to tell Winters the rim isn't that far away...so jump up and drop the ball in! -

First off, I thought you were done and not coming back. Secondly, I actually agree with you. Amazing!Series62;655593 wrote:The coach starts and plays Ray, who is reluctant to shoot and has been commiting too many turnovers.

Sorry you didn't stop and talk to me at Buehlers when you walked right past after I said "well, well". -
An-Old-FanI think the Neer kid can help varsity.
-
OQB1 out of 233 isn't bad.......meaning one post that is good and I agree with.

AND, another country heard from (old saying)....thanks for the support on what I've been getting at. -
RedRider1Heard Neer is a little dinged up right now. There's just a log-jam at the varsity level right now.
series,
I like Mitchell too. I really like TJ and Turner coming off the bench to give us a different (quicker) style. I've always been a Jordan Ray fan, just wish he'd look to penetrate some more....draw that defense in a little.
Hearing that a freshman (guessing Zook or Summers, obviously) will be moving up to JV, so maybe a JV guy will be joining varsity soon? Just thoughts.
Need 2 wins this weekend, badly. -
RedRider1Someone help me out.....Brandon Short got his 1,000th career point in college earlier this month....and it got me thinking.
Have any Red Riders went on to score 1,000 in college? Summers didn't, Ray played football and I don't think Marcell Denson did either.
Pretty sure Bobby Knight didn't either at OSU.
There's gotta be one. Maybe Royer at Ashland?
Yep. http://athletics.ashland.edu//M-Basketball/documents/09-10mensbballrecords.pdf
Scored 1,061 career points.
Any others come to mind? -
