Jesus dude...the way the system is set up, the TIP pays for that portion of there job. That's the system.
And shit like that isn't expected. It's what restaurants want because that is what great service is. So no, those details are not in the job description. -

I don't care whose fault it is I ordered a hamburger with no mustard and it has mustard. The restaurants don't because the customer can pay more than the restaurant can. And the customer isn't required to do so.

If, at the end of the meal, I didn't really notice you, I'll tip 20%. Not because I think the job deserves a tip, but because the restaurants have essentially adjusted server pay to account for them. Had they not done so, I'd be paying more anyway, so to me, a tip is more like "what I should be paying for a no-tip evening."
If I notice a waiter or waitress for a positive reason, it goes up from 20%. If I notice a waiter or waitress for negative reasons, it goes down from 20%.
Also, if 20% is less than $3, I bump it up to $3 usually. I just feel cheap splitting hairs below $3. -

It's been explained before but i'll say it again:
The restaurant business set up their pay scale to allow the customer to decide the value of the service they received. This allows the CUSTOMER to decide if a server is better than minimum wage. If they aren't, the restaurant covers the minimum by law.
Other industries don't use this system. -

I had a waiter who confronted me about not having a tip on the credit card line. Was planning on leaving cash but he came by and made a scene before i left him his tip...needless to say, fuck that guy, didn't leave one.

It's not required, but I do. In my experience, tipping well tends to get you recognized as someone people want to do a good job for. I value a good job being done, so I be sure to add an incentive for such a job.
