What type of tipper are you?

Raw Dawgin' it
I'm not - never once did I say don't tip or that I shaft people. I think it's dumb but I do it. You have no clue how much I leave. It doesn't change the fact that the notion of tipping someone for doing the job they were hired for is basically retarded.Rotinaj;1223188 wrote:Lol you're such a cheap ass. -

BTW, I guess everyone who does this is cheap then. You must leave 30% to feel like special, like you really are helping that server get by! :rolleyes:Rotinaj;1223188 wrote:Lol you're such a cheap ass.

Hammerin'Hank10% or less if service is poor. Usually around 15%. More if I know the server.....which is rare. Everyone should realize that you don't have to tip anything. The owners need to pay their employees more to start with. They rely on the patrons to tip their workers. Why should I pay for the restaurant owner's employees? I've never understood that concept.

RotinajWhy do you do something that you don't think is necessary?

As i said, i tip out of necessity. Bars i frequent and the woman who cuts my hair I tip the most. I don't like waiting for drinks, especially weak ones, and I don't like getting bad haircuts. I tip 20% to waiters at places i frequent and if it's a nice restaurant I'll tip the maitre d' for a decent table. Otherwise I'll leave a dollar or two.Rotinaj;1223193 wrote:Why do you do something that you don't think is necessary?
I think it's dumb that our society deems tips necessary, but I'm not stupid, I understand that tipping gets you treated better and I'm not a martyr. -
Raw Dawgin' itAlso - i appreciate when I order something and the waiter tells me it's really not a good dish and that I'd be happier with something else. That takes balls and for that I leave a tip. Fuck you waiters who tell me everything is delicious.

It's not about being treated better..it's about not being a piece of shit lol if you don't tip a waiter at least a couple bucks, you're a bad, bad human being.Raw Dawgin' it;1223195 wrote:I think it's dumb that our society deems tips necessary, but I'm not stupid, I understand that tipping gets you treated better and I'm not a martyr. -

Laley23Tipping helps everyone. Restaurant, Server and Patron.
It is untaxed profit. Restaurant doesnt have to pay their employees for serving, just what they do around the restaurant. Its allowed to be under minimum wage because they are on a tip based job. Restaurant then is saving money and can charge us less.
Helps the server because, well, they dont claim their tips (yeah...they all break the law lol). You should tip enough to cover their work no matter how bad it is. You should tip well if they exceed what you believe a server should do. For me, if my drink is never empty, and you are engaging without holding a conversation, your gonna get close to 30%.
Helps us because we tip as opposed to having the food be a bit more expensive and paying a higher tax on it, etc. If restaurants had to pay their employees more and thus probably pay more benefit wise, the food would go up a decent amount. -
Raw Dawgin' it
Cost of a meal out would be same if this happens. $40 bucks for 2 w/o tip and higher meal prices or $40 for 2 after tip and lower prices.Laley23;1223229 wrote:Helps us because we tip as opposed to having the food be a bit more expensive and paying a higher tax on it, etc. If restaurants had to pay their employees more and thus probably pay more benefit wise, the food would go up a decent amount. -

Right. But the untraceable money, which is essentially ok'd by the government, makes this better for the restaurant and server without changing the cost for the patron. Thats why I like tipping and think it is better.Raw Dawgin' it;1223234 wrote:Cost of a meal out would be same if this happens. $40 bucks for 2 w/o tip and higher meal prices or $40 for 2 after tip and lower prices. -
believerHere's what CNN Money says are the appropriate tip rates: http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/tipping/
I'll tip 15 to 20% if the service has been good. If I can tell that the server has an "I expect a good tip simply because I'm your server" attitude he or she gets 10%. If they cop an attitude and I know for a fact I won't be returning to that restaurant, they might get 5% or whatever loose change I have in my pocket including the lint.
Tipping is a stupid custom that has gotten out of control in the United States. At one time 10% was customary. Now it's climbed to 20 or even 25%. In Europe 10% is still considered a generous tip.
Personally I'd rather have the service cost rolled into the meal price. For example, if the meal is $20 charge me $23 and be done with it. No more thinking, "Hmmmm.....the service was average but the food was good so I think I'll do 15% this time so that would be - hmmmm - um the bill is $32.17 so that means the tip is almost $4 and something....so I guess I'll just make it an even $5."
Friggin stupid. -

You have two choices, tip, or wait for the whole industry to change and change servers/bartenders to non-tipping wages. So the waitress is now getting paid $5-6 more per hour, guess who is going to pay for that? You are as your meals will go up in price.Raw Dawgin' it;1222197 wrote:I tip 15-20% even though i think it's gay people expect tips. So, you either tip, or pay for the added server wages in the food, either way you are paying for it as a customer.
On topic I tip 20%+ for good service, 15% for average service, 10% for bad, and nothing for absolutely terrible service. -
jmog
No he doesn't, if the owner pays the servers more then your meal will just go up in price. So, you are paying for it either way.Raw Dawgin' it;1223194 wrote:Reps to this man, he gets it. -

lol trueFatHobbit;1223247 wrote:The servers in europe are terrible.
I know plenty of terrible American servers who think they deserve an automatic 15% and probably more. They don't get it from me though. If your service sucks and you cop and attitude with me your tip melts away. -
SykotykWhen I'm eating by myself, I tend to tip about $3-$4 regardless of the price of the meal. If it's something in the $14-$15 range, I tend to just leave $20 as a total. If it's take out, I usually tip the change (but then I tend to leave the change for the charity jars, etc anyways.
Sometimes I'd tip the price of the meal when I'm by myself. $5 (this was back in the late 90s), I'd just pay with a $10 and leave the change. The more expensive the restaurant (namely seafood), the cheaper I am at tipping by percentage. -

I thought it'd be pretty obvious that the tip is contingent upon the server not urinating on your food. -
hasbeenRaw Dawgin' it;1223158 wrote:Ok...so you still haven't answered my question. I like to eat out, but it's not my fault someone takes a job expecting me to give them money outside of their salary. I think tipping is dumb. Do you tip everyone who does a service for you? Doubt it. So, what is an a valid reason to tip? "they gave exceptional service" What is so exceptional? Did they comp me anything? Did they bring me extra food? By exceptional you mean not leave me alone and ask me ten times how my meal is? Honestly, what is exceptional in peoples minds? What do servers do that is above and beyond their job parameters that they deserve 20% of my bill?
Again, the tip is not outside the salary. The salary of the service you receive is something you get to decide the value.
Raw Dawgin' it;1223174 wrote:Not my fault the system is set up that way and not my fault someone decided to work for the good will of others. I tip out of necessity as I've stated before. I don't know what exceptional service is, to me it sounds like "doing the job you were hired for."
You really don't know what exceptional service is? -

Not just Europe, in Asia service (where typically there are no tips) is practically non-existent. You're waiting an hour for the second drink order, if it is even taken at all. The waitstaff has no clue about the menu/wine list.FatHobbit;1223247 wrote:The servers in europe are terrible.
This is an instance where the U.S. got it right. We tip for good service and in turn expect good service. The rest of the world you don't pay for the staff and in turn you get an incompetent staff. -

Just because it's part of their job description doesn't mean they can't be exceptional at it.
