What would get you to be more active on the OC?

I think lack of thread quality/derailing can be done by mods pretty easily in the SB forum. Just start splitting off threads when they get OT and put them in the basement. If said people don't continue their discussion in split threads warn, ban etc.

This could bring back more quality threads and increase participation...

New IP and email really isn't difficult.

I say you charge $0.99 a month per new signup (going forward ... current posters exempt). What isn't easy is getting a new Credit Card or PayPal account constantly.

I agree witch QCB.....there are about 5 on here that just serve no purpose whatsoever for growth...or even maintaining. I love the flexibility of this site but not enough action for the topics I prefer.

    This is what should happen.

Also, the forum I used to moderate; when giving a warning(or infraction) the moderator would be required to edit that post and write something like "This post has received a warning for excessive language ~sleeper" typically in a green/red/blue color. This gives everyone a sign of effective moderation taking place and let's people know that something was done regarding that post. Then the warning would have to get "approved" by an infractions administrator, who would about 40% of the time reject the warning. Also, we had a thread that was "Promotions/Demotions/Ban/Unbanned" where moderators would keep everyone up to date on what was happening with users statuses.

Also the warnings system was a little different. 3 warnings and your account was banned permanently. People would start a new account but their post count/user #/join date/reputation etc would be reset and they would lose their "brand name" obviously. Now you might say, "People don't care about that stuff" but the reality is, for the most part, they do.

Also, porn was an instant permanent ban. Warnings expired after 3 months.

Great post. If no one can see the moderation done, then perception is there is no moderation, except when people make a thread to bitch about it. Splitting threads, editing threads and sleeper's other suggestions are a great way to show you have control of the forum.

Also, I agree on the half naked chick pictures. I will update the rules and put up an announcement that they can only be posted in threads started (and noted) as a NSFW thread.

I think you need to change the whole format of the site, starting with the name. There is nothing in the name that relates to it being a sports site, it just sounds like a basic chat site. When you look at the data for threads and post, the Sreious Business forum almost equals all of the sports related forums combined, that means that this site is not geared toward sports, just my opinion. The site lay out sucks, just your basic style and design that is used by millions of other second rate sites that are not taken serious. Technology has changed with regards to chat sites, there is webcams, video on demand, running scoreboards, Interviews with athletes and fans, front page news and blogs by respected people who offer interesting and current events that people have an interest in reading, not someone that just wants to say, look at me I am in charge of a blog. Hell we had an NFL blog during the season that was a joke for the few weeks that it was actually updated. I am not trying to slam anyone or the site, but you asked for ideas and I would think that you would want the truth, not a candy coated answer from one of your butt kissers that don't want to upset you. I will be the first to admit that I am responsible for some of the asnine comments and threads, but why not just go with the flow like everyone else.

thanks. I was supportive of this idea as well, but didn't post it earlier in the thread.

Also idk if this if a problem for anyone else but the read/unread/cookie thing is totally screwed up for me, and it makes out nearly impossible to find unread threads and posts, and thus prevents me from participating in discussions like I used to. If I log on and everything looks read, I'm not going to hang around and sift through quite frankly.

I believe when this site was first set up it was more of a Serious Business site with the HS Forums added on. It wasn't meant to be just like JJ's. (Thank goodness)

It wasn't a NFL blog. I just posted power rankings. I got too busy and tried to create a thread each week to discuss the rankings, but there wasn't much discussion. So, I said fuck it, and stopped wasting my time.

As far as editing the post, do you leave the original content? We have been unapproving posts that lead to warnings/infractions, but I can see the value in leaving it up with the note. I just don't know how I feel about leaving it up, especially if someone just glances and the crap content and continues it without seeing the mod note.

Where did you get the idea that this was to be mainly a sports site?

Yes you leave the original content. I suppose it depends on the violation(like if someone posts pr0n or reveals some identity), these situations can be done on a case by case basis. This status update thread also allows for posters to see what's going on as well. Or you can just remove the picture and type

Also, if you "leave the crap content up" and some responds to that with a personal attack, you give that person a warning as well. If the thread gets out of control, have a moderator post and close the thread for a few hours letting everyone know to get back on topic.

Example: This post received a warning for personal attack. ~sleeper

I am in the process of changing the site layout, theme, format. It'll still be the forum but there will (hopefully) be more activity outside of just the forums. More details will be coming soon. But, I don't see the site name changing. And yes, this wasn't started as a sports site. It was started as a hey let's all bullshit when we're not busy site.

I wasn't trying to attack you personally for your lack of postings, didn't even remember who it was that was supposed to be in charge of that blog or what ever it was called. Maybe next year Justin can find a local reporter from one of the newspapers or some kid in school who is studying journalism or broadcasting to take a crack at it.

I am actually working on some people outside of the community to create additional content. Not a bad idea trying to find a journalism student.
