I guess the big question is " What happened to Grier?" Not much more than the local paper on results (Crestview). It was hard to see the scores from where we were sitting, some confusion on refs, score keeping etc. Bears were looking pretty good for opening weekend. Surprising end though as both Waynedale and Tuslaw beat Youngstown Boardman by identical scores...I believe 34-22, but Waynedale takes Tuslaw 45-13 for championship. Beam boys perform as expected with Zeb beating returning SQ Bobby Mann 6-3. The team will be meeting Tuslaw in near future dual so this can all change! Thanks 1_beast for touching up on this. It was a fun day..."Proud of Our BEARS"!

Great job Bears ,You guys did look very solid at Crestveiw. The Trey Grub match really changed the tone , I hope the ankle injury isnt a season ending injury. Missing the Marthy boys over a family death also could make some difference in the next match up. 2 more line up changes due to weight could improve our odds at the next meeting with a couple new faces. The next meeting could be far closer ,then maybe you will blow us out again , but I love your fans and the support and loyalty you guys seem to have over there.

Sorry, thats about all WCAL info in the article. I would love to see a boxscore on this tournament and see how the individuals from Chippewa, Dalton & Smithville did.

From Dalton - Vogelhuber won at 135. Logan Hange second at 152. Torgler (160) Johnson (45) and Lehman (71) took 3rd's. Mark Danner (125), 4th and Freshman 1st year wrestler, Brent Shoup was 5th at 103. Won one match, his first. He would be the short one on the football team.
Dalton team was 5th, not bad for us as many classes as we gave up.

Chippewa - Hall won, Schafrath won. H.Hall 4th. Schafrath MVW. Mark Bramley got second?

Kelbly wrestled for 3/4, think he got 3. Better quit, memory fading. See whoever is at WIT Friday!

Hillsdale needs lines in the parking lot and brackets for the fans. Cafeteria set up and food were great though!
  • Wildbear
Thanks folks! Love the input. Wow...sooo close for Chippewa. Hall show any chinks in his armor? Or just a bunch of Tech fall/pins? Hall/Schafrath weights?
  • UncleGrizzly
    Hall 160
    Schafrath 215
  • mompov
Hall's last match closer than I'm used to seeing. Maybe he wasn't expecting it to be either? But when he kicked in he left no doubt.

What a great kickoff weekend for area wrestling....Most of the WCAL wrestled in or very near Ashland County with hardly any local newspaper coverage. Yes, its definately wrestling season.

While it's probably still a little early to project champions, some interesting possibilities are loomimg, like J.Beam/Schaefer and the rare coaches son (Hershey) vs coaches son (Stanley). Not to mention Z.Beam/B.Hall, Schafrath/Mullins & Bouman/Widder.

Not hearing much about Grier, Keyes, Topp & Bryan Fortune. Anybody got the scoop on them?
  • mompov
Keyes should wrestle at WIT this weekend.
  • WGBplayer
Wooster finished 5th at the Madison Tourney. Yost decked Cole Drake of Triway in the first period to win it. Catanzarite finishes 2nd, Devon Anderson 2nd. Elsworth 3rd. Justin Hughes 4th. Logan Gable 6th. Those are the only ones off the top of my head. I believe the paper had them all listed. Overall a solid weekend for a young team. Most of those guys will not be at WIT. So their score will not indicate the entire team. Should be decent when everyone is at weight.
  • 1_beast
why they not going to be at WIT??? Nice to see another Bears in Logan Gable having some success.

What classes did Dalton not fill?

Do you have a 130 or will Dalton be forfeiting that class all year?
  • Tank2009
I heard Grier had surgery last week and thats why he was unable to wrestle last weekend...
  • Wildbear
Something minor I hope! Looking forward to watching him progress this year. Bears going in to their dual with Triway/West Holmes tonight. Not sure what to expect out of this. Maybe they'll bump Drake up to wrestle Beam at 160. Could be a preview rematch of Stitzlein/Petersheim, which should be good. Should be some good wrasslin' at 145. Any info on West Holmes line up ?? Where's Trey at?
  • Tank2009
If im not mistaking Grier broke his nose. Thats why he was wearing that mask when he wrestled Spreng at the all star preview. I say we start talking about the W.I.T. Anyone have predictions or thoughts about the tournament!!!??? Should be a good tournament to go watch...
  • mt1514
Rumor had it early on that Raber is gonna wrestle 160,if so we will see a Raber vs. Hall match up most likely at the W.I.T.
  • Tank2009
That would be a heck of a match to watch! Any other good finals matches to watch? Anybody know what weights people will be at? Also who are some stand out studs that are gonna be there?
  • Wildbear
Raber wrestled 189 over the weekend. When's WIT ?? Maybe he bumped though for some action :dodgy:.

Holding some freshmen out so they can go to a few JV meets. Very young team. Better to wrestle 3-4 JV matches with more equal kids than going 2 and out is the thought. I think 10 kids is what Wooster is bringing to the WIT
