Car buying...learn me

We have adjusted our plan and will be buying a truck as a third vehicle instead of replacing her car. This drops our budget down to about $15k but I can be a lot less picky since it won't be my daily vehicle.

Yeah…we were going to trade in a 6 year old Accord with 70,000 miles and on the way to get our “new” car we decided let’s just buy the car and keep the Accord (dealership wanted it bad but nah, we knew to keep it)

Gas shot up double and my son now has a great used car and we have the old truck to lug around mowers, mulch, whatever. Everyone is happy…as long as my old old Accord holds up

Still haven't found a truck...

I looked at a couple F150's but they had a ton of rust.

Wheels and tires installed yesterday. This truck is pretty much done and ready for offroading. Moab end of the month!

My buddy who lives like a Dr but is a car salesman….he says used cars will be outrageously priced for 2-3 more years and he recommended only buying new ( and his business is 50/50 new/used)

I will have my car paid off in Sept.

Plan is to save the payment until about March then use the saved payment, my current car trade in/sell price, and part of my bonus next year as a down payment on a new Ford Raptor.

Wanted one since they first came out and can finally afford one, depending on options they are between $70k and $90k.

Just love the way they look and drive, and plan on driving it to Utah for our vacation next year, take it off road for real since that’s what it’s designed for

I'm researching Moab as I type this. Fuck...I have a lot of work to do. Sooooo many options for offroading. I'll stick to the easy stuff for this trip, I'm a total newb.

Where are you looking?

Also, are you willing to:

1. Overpay?

2. Travel to pickup or get delivered?

The car I drive everyday was paid off before this website was created 😁

I've been looking online in the Cincinnati and Newark markets. I've looked at a couple in person in Cincinnati but haven't test drove anything (other than the initial Tacoma).

I'm not willing to overpay much, which is making it very tough.

My mom's bf has a barebones Ram 1500 for sale that we didn't love the idea of at first but that might be the route we end up going for now.

It's actually a 2500, not a 1500. But it's only $8k.

Depending on year and mileage, you may find yourself liking it.  I got a used Silverado a few years ago, basic work model, regular cab. The only thing I really miss on it is cruise control, but even my wife likes having the beast around.

Wife traded in her GLC 350 for a GLS 450. We didn’t notice any markup in price. Trade in was pretty fair too.

I think he said 2011 with 120k miles on it.

He said if he lists it on Facebook Marketplace he's going to ask $12k but probably willing to go to $11k. It was an AEP (his employer) truck he got on auction and fixed some issue on. He's basically got $8k in it after buying it and repairing it.

The MPG is rough, apparently.

Are you towing anything of significant weight? If not, hard pass.

No, which is why I'm not in love with it.

Regular cab trucks (aside from work/utility purposes) are also less than ideal. I had one for a few years, hated it.

My wife used to harp on me that my last truck was regular cab and "where do we put the kids" etc. I would reply with "well, if we have more than 2 people going we take your car".

Now I see the error in my ways, my Raptor next year will definitely be a SuperCrew, 4 full size doors.

Yes, another thing I don't like about it.

But I'm looking at 2x the price, at least, for anything decent.

Just my opinion, but if you have that budget and want something “off-road ready” out of the gate, I would go Bronco. But truck vs. SUV. Depends on your use case.

I do love Raptors though, I see a lot of them in CO.

My wife wants one of the new Bronco's for her next car (3-5 years down the road depending how long her car lasts).

I really have loved the look of the Raptor since it was first introduced in 2010. I never had the budget for one though.

With 2 of 3 kids now out of the house (well, 1 out and the 2nd out by end of this year going to Marines) and paying off a lot of our other monthly payments/debts (between last week and October will have paid off $1100 in payments of stuff) I will finally have the budget for one. But I don't want to get it without a decent down payment to lower the monthly some.

Crazy thing is, even with $15,000 or so down by the time I get it in March, the monthly payment will be more than my house even including the taxes and insurance for the house.
