Open enrollment ..... If a child lives in Mingo and wants to go to BR then the parents bring them in. The same for IC or anywhere else. UNLESS that child is handicapped or impaired.
As for H C kid , He either drives or the parents bring in. Its not rocket science. Why all the haters??
Who care's what child came from what school. Obviously he was not lovin it there and wanted a chance at a scholarship. Why would anyone complain about that? Do any of you want to help put him thru college? Speak up!

No... didn't think so. Quit dissin the kid and the parents. Families do what families have to do. If he has a better chance for some exposure for college and a scholarship at Big Red , who are we to judge?
It does get a little complicated when Steubenville starts sending buses into Edison's district for kids. Can Creek, Toronto, Edison, Buckeye start sending buses downtown for kids who "open enroll"?

Really? College scholarships? With the exception of a couple in the last 30 years, do the big boys of college football really make it a point to come to Steubenville? It's hardly a breeding ground for NCAA greats. I mean, Ohio State doesn't even give them a long look. There have been a few others in the last 30 years to achieve football greatness without going to Big Red.

Granted, Steubenville does get looks from D1 from the likes of Akron, Toledo, BG, and Kent, but I just heard that Ron Powlus was in the area recruiting a kid who is NOT from Steubenville High School.
Actually, the big boys do know about Big Red. Tressel has seen some of our games in the past few years. Paterno gave one of our players a scholarship about three years ago. One of our current players is starting to get Big 10 offers. West Virginia and Cincinnati certainly know about us. Big Red puts a lot of players in the MAC and Div. II. I don't know how many players Big Red now has on college scholarships, but it is a sizable number.

It really is the truth that Big Red gets a lot of exposure.

It really is the truth that they are better off going to Bellaire. They have produced the most NFL-caliber talent in the area in the past 20 years.
  • bduq37
Damn! I shouldn't have said that. To the Bellaire faithful: Please hold me accountable for any Steubenville City School buses that you may see in the near future.

Big Red has been winning long before open enrollment...keep it up! I love all this talk about just how well SCS (Steubenville City Schools) are doing attracting students and student/athletes. Yep, maybe if the rest of the school systems would market their school systems I.E pass levee's, build new schools or renovate them. How about trying to operate in the BLACK from time to time rather then in the RED.

I live in Florida and I see many of the top ranked teams in the nation play here. And "ALL" of them get transfers. Some get 4 or 5 each yr. And these are DIV I athletes. Getting looks at Florida, FSU, Miami, USF. Last yr a nationally ranked QB transferred cause his whole line graduated as well as his top 2 WR's.

A young talented DB transferred to Gibbs where Donnie Abraham (Buccaneers, Jets) is head coach. Do you blame him for wanting the BEST coaching available to him.

Many play for a couple of diff teams in a 4 yr period. Nothing is wrong with it. If the rules are being followed then the FHSAA has nothing to say about it.

I don't ever remember anyone from big red crying when we lost players in the past. Yelling that they were recruited away. If they don't want to play for us fine. Good luck. And the next player will step it up.

The guy who went to Penn State (Radokovich) is the son of one of our past assistant coaches who himself graduated from Big Red.

And then there is Busick. If he had stayed at Weir High instead of moving to Steubenville, he would probably be playing in the MAC right now instead of going to WVU. Transferring to Big Red was the best thing that ever happened to him.
  • war_admiral
Your wrong about that fairwoodking, If his only school he wanted to play for was WVU he would have got a DIV I offer to WVU for football or wrestling. The kid had "IT" plus his parents would not let that happen. You would not need to worry about Bully kicking him in the butt...he had to look out for mama. I've talked to them. I know first hand what they had to do for Branko to attend big red. And that ever since Branko was little he wanted to play for big red. So his parents made it happen.

I do think that transferring to big red, opened up a wider audience for recruiters to see him play. And access to better coaching, facilities, more playing time and competed Vs better competition in Ohio.

Heck in his 3 yrs at the big red he played in what like 43 games...that's a SEASON plus more games then most schools play in 3 yrs ( 10 games per season= 30 games). His record was (41-2) while winning 1 State Championship, 1 State Runner-Up, 2 Region Championships and was named ALL-STATE and Ohio Defensive Player of the Year in 08'.

But transferring to big red it did not hurt;)

I have a question... Just how many "transfer" or "open enrollment" kids have received Division 1 scholarships? How about Division 2? Just wondered... I am sure that the kid from HC will have his parents drive him to school. Either that, or he will walk because they WILL be watching.

So yea, how many "transfer" kids have scholarships? (besides Branko... WVU would have found him at Weir just as much as Steubenville given his best friend was found hidden in the mist over there...

2008 was really hyped up... Big Red-Alter... Yes Tressel was there and I believe he came away with THREE players from Alter? How many offers did Big Red get?

I have to call bull on that one. And Fairwood, if you were here to know the whole situation, you would not have posted this. This post is overlooked because he isn't close enough to know WVU is very friendly with Weir also.

Yea, not so much anymore... So MoW, how about those other questions I asked? Your the man that would know best.
  • ManO'War
What was your question? There is so much mis information in this thread that it is hard to keep up.
  • sonofsam
How many "transfer kids" have received Division 1 or even Division 2 scholarships for football?
  • ManO'War
    Go here.. www.rollredroll.net/bigredcollege.htm
  • sonofsam
    when did open enrollment start?
  • sonofsam
How many of the people on that list actually received scholarship offers from those schools? How many pick those schools and chose to continue to their football career without scholarship? I saw quite a few because a lot of those colleges were D3 and higher. Just wondering if you had an actual number? Numbers seem to be Big Red's specialty... How many of those people on that list were transfers into Big Red?

Another question, what about the kid from East Springfield that grew up with Big Red? His father teaches there correct? He was a ball boy, busted his rear, was a product of open enrollment and had a ride with dad... He even has a championship ring as a water boy and totally dedicated himself to Big Red football, so why is the incoming HC lineman getting a look over him? So many question, NO answers.

Im not even a Big Red "supporter", by any means,,,,, But,,,,,,

STFU already!!! I mean cheese and rice, if you are that freaking upset about BR, stay the freak off the threads!!!!!!!

I cant stand your antics, and you are becoming OVERLY obsessed!! Please, STOP!!!!!!

Your team stinks, BR is better, MOVE ON, GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • MANAZE
SOS why do you complain so much about transfers when you yourself is a person who transfered schools? You had your reasons and so do those people, its time to stop talking about it.
  • ovacker
Apparently SOS has some explaining to do..Got a pm that says that both parents collect a paycheck from the diocese. Guess its okay to mooch off the catholics. Unbelievable for an IC guy seems like he and his family are supported by Steubenville. What a joke.
