rrfan;1737159 wrote:What is your question? I fully assume we will go to the PAC and get beat often. If you have no talent it does not matter what league you play in.
The last few years we'd have been much more of a 5-5 team in the PAC, than the 2-8 we've been in the OCC. Are we all ecstatic over that? No. But it is what it is when you look at the breadth and depth of talent we have right now.

In my opinion, we go 3-4 or 4-3 in the PAC last year.

Do we win the league in the last few years? No. Are we getting beat 40-7 & 50-14? No.

Even with a dip in talent...we're a competitor in the PAC each and every week.

Will we go undefeated forever and ever once we join the PAC?? Certainly not. Anyone thinking that better get the "fire the coach" petitions ready. It's not realistic.

The 1980's era of dominance were 30 years ago...and aren't coming back.
  • Old Rider
We don't and won't have the talent of those 80's teams...but we will have a very similar schedule as those teams had in the 80's when we join the PAC. In that aspect I think we do and WILL return to winning like we are used to. At least that is my thought anyhow...

The baseball program will be back. The coach is involved with the youth program and it's good from top to bottom but I'm sure you will be cheering for them to lose just to prove a point because you are a moron! Last question for you is this: when Orrville goes to the PAC 7 and still rattles off 3 or 4 losing seasons then what? Wait till then right? 7-23 in your last 3 seasons hasn't convinced you yet?? Enjoy the ride!
Listen closely...we did not play triway in the playoffs in 2011. It was 2010 and we won. Your entire fight on the coach and the question you wanted answered is a game we won? Really? Come on...

No you listen here! Lol. I don't listen when I read I just read. So let's recap. I don't care about years and I'm sure it's an easy opportunity to one up me and seem like you get over on me. Good for you. Let's be realistic though I have nothing against Doug personally. Let me sound like a broken record and give you these facts:

Doug owns the worst loss ever to Triway

Doug owns the worst loss ever to Wooster

Doug was in a playoff game against Triway in whatever year and with game in hand and no Triway timeouts and he called a passing play

Doug has a team that is constantly called for false start, offsides, late hit penalties with nothing said to them when they come to sideline

Doug stands 30 feet away from all players during entire game

Doug had more D1 prospects on a team together and has nothing to show for it (Brenner D1 talent but not D1 smarts

Doug has 3 straight losing seasons at Orrville including a 7-23 record overall

Doug lost to a Wayne County Athletic team because he had no game plan for that game. "Let's just line it up and Norwayne will be intimidated because we are Orrville"

And again we ALL agree you can't win without much talent. Not even Urban Meyer could take this team to the playoffs right now. Wins and losses aside though your community has joined me in saying a change is needed. Go to a game on a Friday night and tell me I'm wrong. The community does not support sloppy and who can blame them? Good coaches never stop teaching and coaching and it's simply not there with Orrville.

So I ask you this?? If you agree Orrville being in the PAC 7 is a bad idea and the team rattles off 3 more losing seasons does Doug stay?

I'll give my perspective on the list here...always up for a good time courtesy of RRN.

Doug owns the worst loss ever to Triway - No matter who the coach was, this would've happened with the low talent level....

Doug owns the worst loss ever to Wooster - No matter who the coach was, this would've happened with the low talent level....

Doug was in a playoff game against Triway in whatever year and with game in hand and no Triway timeouts and he called a passing play - A first down would've iced the game also, and who won this game again????

Doug has a team that is constantly called for false start, offsides, late hit penalties with nothing said to them when they come to sideline - Sounds like you want a ranting and raving coach to get in the players faces and yank their facemasks when they come to sideline....sorry, that doesn't fly in this day and age. And if you think nothing is ever said about those penalties...you're a bigger idiot than already imagined.

Doug stands 30 feet away from all players during entire game - I'd recommend you stay at least 30 feet away from Doug at all times for your own safety...

Doug had more D1 prospects on a team together and has nothing to show for it (Brenner D1 talent but not D1 smarts - You're an idiot if you're actually trying to say that those teams are better than the Orrville teams of the 80's & 90's....

Doug has 3 straight losing seasons at Orrville including a 7-23 record overall - Jesus couldn't have coached those teams to a better record....

Doug lost to a Wayne County Athletic team because he had no game plan for that game. "Let's just line it up and Norwayne will be intimidated because we are Orrville" - That was a once in a lifetime Norwayne team that WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! They lost 34-19....what more do you expect?

Let's be realistic though I have nothing against Doug personally. - Seriously? You just whined about him with 8 separate points...

Wins and losses aside though your community has joined me in saying a change is needed. - I'm assuming the community support was OVERWHELMING with your "Fire Coach DeVault Petition" crusade....LOL.

Many would say that "Coach Davault" (show some respect RRN) has done more for his players than any other coach in the history of Orrville football for his players to get them to the next level.

Most of your points come down to talent and we don't have any. If you find me a way around that let me know until then you are not going to get any negatives out of me on the Coach.

By the way look at some of the teams that Mac and Mo had that did not win it all. Note to RRN it is freaking hard to win it all.

Most coaches will tell you that they have to tread lightly when it comes to disciplining players these days for several reasons. First...chewing a kids butt these days in public or at practice (depending on the kid/parent) will likely result in a phone call or visit from the parent wondering why "my child" was disciplined? Its never the kids fault right?
Second...many kids these days will tuck their tail between their legs and fold. Or worst yet...just quit. "Its too hard...or too physical."
I commend coaches these days...I would have long been fired because there is only one way I know how to get after a kid and that is right in his grill!!
As for Davault...I will agree that we have seen WAY TOO MANY silly penalties over the years while he has been in charge. Although it doesn't fall all on him...most of it does. And I do think he CAN control that! Something needs to change there! I would also agree that he does not show enough emotion on the field...but thats not his style. Never has been and I have got used to it.

Mo's teams had their share of personal fouls....Mac's too. Doesn't mean it's acceptable...but it's Red Rider tradition just like out-talenting teams instead of out-executing them.

Coach can control it, but when you're dressing 25 kids, it's tougher to sit a kid, especially a senior two-way player. I'd like to see a little more of the offending party take a play or two off just to get his head straight...but I'm not going to pretend that it's that easy.

Coaches have my utmost respect. They're far from perfect and they'll be the first to tell you...but they have a tough job in the era of kids who'd rather be playing video games.

"Doug had more D1 prospects on a team together and has nothing to show for it "
    My take on this comment:
Hoobler(prior to injury) and Monheim have seen significant action in D1....that was it. A few others made it to that level but never saw the field and few if any finished out at the D1 level. You could attribute that to many different things one of which is a coach working very hard with college coaches to get his players noticed. We can think all we want that some of those teams were loaded with D1 talent but history proves otherwise. In addition, most of those teams had significant shortcomings that the talent we did have covered up for to a point.

To the nothing to show for it?? No State championships...I agree. But I wouldn't call what a few of those teams accomplished "nothing". I think Mason played in 51 or 52 HS football games in four seasons from fall of 2008 until fall of 2011? with a 10 game regular season schedule the other 12 games were playoff games??? I think the 2007 season we played Mooney in Regional finals? or semis? Now Mooney was a team with D1 talent and some NFL as well. the difference was quite noticeable.

Easy to forget how good of a run we made from 2006 to 2011

2006 - 10-3, Regional final loss to Mooney, they won state
2007 - 6-4 (three of the four losses were to playoff teams with a combined record of 32-6)
2008 - 7-3 (two of the three losses were to playoff teams with a combined record of 19-4)

******In both 2007 and 2008, losses to West Holmes (5-5 both years) sunk us. Cost us 2 playoff appearances with above average teams.

2009 - 9-4, Regional final loss to Ottawa Glandorf
2010 - 10-4, State semifinal loss to Chagrin Falls
2011 - 8-4, 2nd round loss to Norwayne, they won state

Out of that bunch...I think the 06 and 09 teams had the best shots at winning it all.

    '06 Kyle Simmons....enough said

"09 Hoobler breaks his fibula in the 4th quarter even if we would have beat Ottawa he was done
'11 Monheim separated shoulder in first week playoff game. Probably shouldn't have played vs Norwayne but he wouldn't have any part of that. Brenner has to step in and play QB due to concussion on starting QB. Pretty hard to make a long playoff run with all that, let alone have the eventual State Champions in your way.
Lady luck needs to be on your side to win it all sometimes..especially with deficiencies at key spots. I'd say lady luck fell on our side in '98 even with a very talented team.

    Well said.....

As has been said before...winning it all is not easy. That's why it's so special. If not for that quick TD call by the ref at the end of the 1998 game vs. Coldwater, it may be another "so close" chapter in our football history.

Still can't believe we didn't win one title in that 83-85 run where we were so good. Got there twice but couldn't cash it in.

If that happened now....people would be complaining and petitioning about Mo not being able to win the big one.
  • Old Rider
Always need a little luck on your side to win a title. Look at every "team" title we have here in Orrville and (except for volleyball and track because I didn't follow those teams) you can find a "pivotal" play or game that swung momentum Orrville's way and propelled us to the title.
92' basketball - overtime win vs. St. V. (regional final)
94' basketball - overtime win vs. Ontario (state semis)
95' basketball - took the final play to beat Ottawa Glandorf (state final)
98' football - Robinson's "mystery catch" as some call it (state final)

Norwayne might say their win over us helped motivate and propel their team to the 11' football title.

Always good to have luck on your side!

Maybe there is an argument to be made there...although I am not starting it. Man is a legend!!! One of the greatest coaches in Ohio Football history!

You guys are talking about some fun times right there. We have been blessed over the years and at some point we will be again. Right now we need to enjoy what the lady riders have the ability to be the next 3-5 years. There is a wealth of talent and all of us should be ready for some exciting times in Volleyball, Basketball, and Track. Would love to add another banner in the rafters...

All the stuff RRN does not want to hear. those players are very special to have a Monheim, Simmons, Brenner...and the list could go on and on but it changes a team really quick with one or more of them on there.

Take Simmons for example...Name another superstar on that team....he made them all better.

Old Rider was part of one of those pivotal plays. In basketball he just took the ball at half court from the other team and that turned the game around in the last few seconds.

You can predict the score of every game and then get on there after the game and prove yourself right. You and only you are really good at that. I wish I had your skill set.
