I'm ever so curious to hear who you'd have lead this revival at Orrville High School. Your extensive knowledge of football and leadership make your choice very intriguing.

Don't underestimate him. He had played Madden in his mom's basement for years. He had more Lombardi trophies than you can dream of.

LOL...Red Rider Nation is a joke on here.

Always love the calls for New Leadership? LMAO. I'm sure if you arm chair QB parents got your wish and the leadership positions were forced open, there would be a LOOOOOOOONG list of top state playoff qualified candidates applying for the job to be able to coach the 25 kids on varsity. Specially because of the tradition you HAD and 98 State Title.

This thing is heading off the rails! LOL!

Heard to was a hard contested game this past Friday? Kids showed some grit and toughness. Who was there? What did you see that you liked? Also, what is the mix again of grades and starters???? I will look through the thread and see if I missed it.

    Sanitizer,
We were down 21-0 in the first half for the 3rd straight week.....but came all the way back to tie it at 28. Liked the kids toughness. Got some big plays from Hersh & Domer out of the backfield...and Luke had a much better night throwing the ball. Line struggled on both sides, but we're undersized and it shows.

Kids could have rolled over and quit....but didn't.

Unfortunately we have a real tough 3-game stretch....at Senior and at WH....both teams will look to pound us.....and Ashland at home who spreads it out.

I think we dressed 25 kids.....2 typical starters on defense did not play a snap on Friday, one wasn't even in pads....and we lost another defensive lineman for the season. So take an already thin team, remove 3 defensive starters. It is what it is.

Hersh & Domer don't play defense at all, and Smith plays in spurts at safety. All 3 are the keys to our offense, so while I'd love to see them helping on D, you can't risk it.

Breakdown is something like 5 seniors, 9 juniors, 10 sophs......not a lot to work with....but the kids will give it everything they have.

Remember our friends from Genoa??....they're 1-3 & have scored a total of 50 points on the season. They used to score 60+ weekly.

Must the be the coach, right?

They replaced their old coach in 2014! Maybe this new one hasn't figured it out but he hasn't been there as long as Doug!

Wonder if it has anything to do with "fans" with top notch qualifications.

Maybe Vicars saw the writing on the wall that their run of talent was over & took a better opportunity?

    Small school football.

After this year Doug will have a 58-54 record at Orrville in 10 years. What a standard of excellence!

And has gone from 46 kids to 25 in his span!! Thanks for playing everyone!!!
  • rrfan
Really tired of all the stuff on here that can't change. You have a good coach that is getting more out of this team than most would be able to. Number are what they are many kids are deciding to stay on the couch and play Madden with Red Rider Nation than actually do the work.

The kids played their butts off Friday night and about pulled off a big comeback. They have not quit and will be working this week to get better.

Talk about things that can happen and how all of us could be a part in helping it happen. Otherwise just go away!

I'm convinced this guy is the biggest moron on here, not to mention one of the biggest cancers to Orrville football that there is right now...

Mo and Mac each had 3-4 year stretches in their coaching career that are similar to what Doug has dealt with these last 3-4 years. Unfortunately, Orrville fans (including myself) only care about one thing...making it to week 11. One thing that Mo and Mac never had to deal with were the low participation numbers (and soccer).

I am going to say it again...this transition to the PAC will be a good thing. It WILL NOT turn things around in one season. Yes, we may see a few more wins on Friday night (we may not as well). But the transition to playing schools that are more in line with our own enrollment, couple that with some more wins on Friday nights, and you WILL see those numbers come back. It will take time...but those number will jump.

Also...I saw that our enrollment has increased every year since the new elementary school has opened. Class sizes in K-4 are very similar to what we had when I was in school in the mid 90's. My son's 3rd grade class has almost 140 kids in it and the current kindergarten class is larger than that!

Hard to disagree, the enrolment numbers in the younger grades is GREAT to hear!

Why is it that you can't comprehend that there are more than 25 players on the team? How in the heck are you qualified to make any statement about the job the coach is doing when you can't even count?

I'd love to see you and Urban work together to solve the buckeyes issue with odd fronts. I can envision it now.

Urban: RRN, our boys up front are really struggling with their blocking assignments on power read against MSU's odd front. How can we make this work?

RRN: We need to account for the four down lineman first and fore most Urb.

Urban: RRN, I don't know what you mean. We're blocking an odd front this week.

RRN: Exactly! Get the front four first! Duh!

Urban: Someone find me Coach Devault please!

Go back to RR1's quote on the last page. Pretty sure he said 5 seniors, 9 juniors, 10 sophomores is that more than 25?? What am I Missing? Maybe you should get out and go see a game or join the rest on here and don't. A bunch of folks with strong opinions for not seeing many games. RRfan basically admits he doesn't go to any because they are "hard to watch". I don't go anymore either because it's the same old Orrville football. 4 plays that don't work and 1 on defense that doesn't either. Not real hard to scout that! Kids with dumb penalties and never getting talked to, helmets off on the sideline, shirts untucked, out hustled, and out worked!! Someone please explain to me how having more talent changes what I just mentioned were the downfalls of this team?? It's not about talent or wins and losses at this point. CC if I am a cancer to Orrville football well that says a lot about the character of these kids! I don't know any of them and don't go to games anymore. If they are more caught up in what is said on here then add that to the list of stuff above! I can take the name calling it's really no big deal. I have my opinion and you have yours. Just because they aren't the same and you want to call me names feel free.

We were fun to watch Friday in my opinion. Yes a loss but kids played hard and made plays on offense. Far from "4 plays that don't work" and a huge improvement over the effort against NW.

And about kids getting silly penalties...the one kid who had a dumb penalty in week 3 & got ejected is no longer on the team...so tell me again about how there's no consequences?

I thought we played well Friday from a discipline standpoint. One bad penalty that killed a drive..but that was by a kid that was forced into his position because of injuries to others. And I saw Doug counsel him & other players personally between plays...so let's put to bed the "he doesn't talk to his players" crap. If you're not at games, don't make assumptions.

We dressed 25 Friday but are down to 22-23 of 10th-12th graders.

Your last sentence here tells the story! That's embarrassing to the tradition at Orrville!

Your fan base is also your number of players times 10. Not good!

What's changed? Why is your community not supporting your team?? Because those days Old Rider mentioned with Mo and Mac the community still came out? Is it maybe because more than the 6 people that are on this site actually agree with me? He has to go. Make him an assistant and let him stay a part of the program I am good with that. I showed someone a text I received a year ago from a parent of a current player talking about Davault. It is really eye opening. It's not just me guys I promise you that. Parents from current players saying the very same things. I promise. I couldn't make this up!

This program is a wreck. It needs fixed because it will get worse before it gets better. People are talking behind the scenes and I am no longer the minority. I can show you the messages I just will not tell you who sent them. More than one.

Saying they are hard to watch and not watching are two different things. Friday I saw a team that gave everything they had. Play calling was much better than at Triway which I said on here was horrible. Your agenda does not get you anywhere. Why keep trying to fire a coach that is good for the community, good role model for the HS kids, and works his butt off? Of all the stuff on here that we talk about really none of it goes back to a coach.

Also, you talk about dumb penalties and that being on a coach...that is not a new problem. I can name many players under different coaches that got away with much more in the form of dumb penalties every game than what these kids get. How about two names for you Deke Hostetler and Dwight McCoy. Ring a bell they were good for about 30-45 yards in penalties per game.

So we are not counting Freshman still? I guess they have zero interaction with the "old guys" and coaching staff. What's changed? We are going this route again? I'll sum up what I said a few weeks ago and dumb it down for you. EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED IN ORRVILLE! No major manufacturing going on in Orrville. Population is way down. Smuckers hires a lot of people. Most of which, even those in the plant require high level degrees. Orrville isn't swimming in Bachelor and Masters degrees. It's a younger work force that want to live in Copley, Wooster, and Fairlawn. Those young kids don't want to live in a run down town full of high taxes and get next to nothing in return. Orrville is far from cool. The school is no longer the pride and community center and that's the way it is all over now. Heck, look at Massillon for a minute. We use to be the Massillon of Wayne County. Jobs left Massillon and the entire school district has suffered from a population and athletics standpoint when compared to the glory days. Orrville has done the same.

Why don't you live in Orrville anymore? Most likely a lot of the same reasons listed above. It's not a tradition thing. It's a life thing. Life has got in the way of tradition. Your buddy Urban couldn't have done much better than what our coaches have done the last few years. This last week, those kids showed grit. A direct reflection of their coaching. If the penalties are a reflection of him as you state, then so are the good moments. I'm sorry you're ignorant or choose to be ignorant to these things. I figured with you leaving Orrville, that your outsider perspective might have left you with some sensibility compared to the honks that are still in the community. I am wrong. Please let me know the next time you're at the square with a fire Devault petition. I'll be sure as to where to drop my trash.

Not trying to sound argumentative but I would take ANY opinion from a parent with a grain of salt? Too many parents have too many opinions sometimes anyways (me included). What a child needs vs. what a parent THINKS needs to be done can certainly be clouded by a pounding on a Friday night. I am saddened that RRN does not attend Orrville games, but I am saddened that I don't attend as many as I would like either. Oldest Rider2 makes some good points. I was talking with a former Rider (we were both mid 90's graduates), he has 4 kids, I have 3 kids another friend of ours has 4 kids, all within 15-18 months of each other. If I take into account a few other former players and those numbers get bigger really quickly. But just with the three of us that would make 11 potential future Red Riders.... Unfortunately opportunities were elsewhere.
I have had a few opportunities to talk with DeVault, Mosely and Jason. These guys CARE about our program. I don’t base that on what anyone “else” says about them, or heard someone say they heard…. That is my personal humble opinion. RRN keep something in mind, the number one problem (no coach wants to talk about for fear of not being a coach anymore) is many of the parents who seem so quick to complain, or let kids quit because it is to hard may be the same ones sending texts to you?

I tend to lean towards the opinions of those that have stayed and actually played and been a part of the history in our town. Those are the opinions I care the most about. I have said it before and there are just too many measurable facts to deny it, LOTS of factors influencing the program right now but GOOD people who CARE are still involved and I believe in my town and the people working to make it better. I love my town, always will. And it will turn. These kids played their HEARTS out last week and that ethic WILL make them better. RTR for LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • RedRider1
    RRN,
You're not in the majority. All these texts and conversations you've had are always secret and whispers.

    Oldest Rider,
Another bullseye of a post. To backup your statement about Massillon....I agree 100%. Same changes we've seen, they've seen too. Lots of factory jobs gone forever....a shift in the population with it. Nobody wants to live in Massillon. In 1985, they had 4900 kids in the district, now they're at 4000....a 20% drop. Their african-american population is half of what it was 30 years ago....and 2500 students of the 4000 they have now are considered "economically disadvantaged" by the state. That's 62.5%. Think those kids are coming out for football in large numbers? Think NOTHING has changed in Massillon also? Oh, they're 1-3 and have no talent that what they've been used to for decades. Kids are going to Perry, Jackson and even Tuslaw in droves over Titletown.
