I bet if the school board offered to name the field "Keith Schrock Stadium" they might be able to raise the funds. ;)

Won't happen with the current school board and administration.

And frankly speaking, it's a travesty.

My back yard is better than Smithvilles field

Great time to rename the field (Keith Shrock Field), run a fundraiser and get it done. Its not just the field...the ENTIRE stadium could use a face lift in my opinion. Especially with the new school there as a backdrop. West Holmes hired the same company this year that does Lexington's grass field and those playing surfaces are beautiful. Lexington may have the nicest grass field in the whole state.

Allegedly, one of the well-respected locals offered to pay to have the field redone, and all the board had to do was rename the place Keith Schrock Stadium, and the administration refused, saying they don't name school facilities after people.

I'll be sure to remember to not go see any basketball games in the Wilbur Burkey Fieldhouse.

Really?? Honoring a legend and getting a stadium upgrade in the process...and they say NO? What the heck!

Well, as I recall, that administration hardly has a great relationship with Schrock as it is.

There's an election next week. Vote em out.

Please do not get me started on the GLSDBOE ... I have a less than favorable opinion of them ... but to not take the money and get the field redone for a naming right is really very very stupid on their part ... I guess they are going to rename the Burkey Field House now ... let them try that ... you wanna see some folks go nuts ... anyway the GLSD BOE is very short sighted and have their own agenda ...

Time to reach out to Weed Zapper to maintain the field at Smithville. Dave Goodard (owner) is a Smithville grad and former football player from the early 60's. I would think that he would love the opportunity to maintain that field and put his company stamp on it.

While I love Smithville football, I hate what the administration did to Schrock at the end of a great coaching career. He dedicated his life to teaching and coaching at Smithville and now he gets no respect. Dirty SHAME!
Looking forward to the Smithville/Waynedale game tomorrow! I wonder which Smithville team will show up?

I share this. I have no love for what the administration did to Coach Schrock. He was a great teacher and a great coach. It was bittersweet seeing that he had taken an assistant coach position at Wooster. I was happy to see him able to coach again, and on his own terms. But it was a little painful not to see him wearing green and white.

Make no mistake, though; he gets a LOT of respect. I honestly wonder if it was done out of fear. He easily had/has more sway with the people of Smithville than the superintendent, the principal, or any member of the school board.

Having said that, it was at least good to have someone who was groomed as a coach under Schrock filling his spot. I have a great deal of respect for Brent, and I truly think that a big part of the kind of coach he is wouldn't be the case if it weren't for Schrock.

In fact, I might say the same for Mike Thut of Northwestern.

That's one thing the school board and administration will never be able to take away: his fingerprint around the county. People who have spent time with him on the field are all over the place, but many have stayed close to home, and I can tell you that they were certainly affected by having him as a coach. Whether we're talking about people who coached under him, people who have coached against him, students who played for him, or parents of people who did, the degrees of separation are never that far away.

This is the sign of a great coach and better man. When you can have a positive affect on the people you come in contact with..... Great tribute! I myself did not attend Smithville High School but know MANY that have and the way they speak of the old coach and teacher are pretty much identical to this post. Cool to see. But I am just and old softy! ;)

The Waynedale Smithville game should be one of the better ones of the year. The team that can hang onto the ball will win. It is like each week you never know what to expect from either one?
Vs Chippewa - Smithville win, Waynedale blowout loss
Vs Norwayne - Smithville losses lopsided game, Bears lead the entire game and lose late
Vs Hillsdale - Smithville loss, Bears blowout win
Vs NW - Smithville win, Bears blowout loss
Just proves you can't use like opponents to compare teams.
If Bears have the run and pass game going, they win tonight by 2 scores. If they don't, then Smithville will grind it out and win by 1-2 scores. I just don't see a 14-13 type game in apple Creek. Wish I could make this one. Someone please post updates during the game.

Question ... If Chipps lose (God forbid) to the Huskies, do you think they still go to playoffs and do you think the Huskies go too? Or does some other 'miracle' have to happen to make this a reality? I do hope the Chipps win and win big cause they need the points to get a home playoff game! (Long shot I know). And what 'teams' are showing up tonight for this game ...

Chippewa is in regardless. They are a 99% lock. A home game is not likely going to happen under any circumstance. Northwestern is alive by a thread. They need to win and get help. The Chipps will most likely land in the 5 or 6 spot and play Swanton or Edison on the road. Who knows what Chipp team shows up tonight! Seeing the game doesn't have huge implications; my guess is they roll. That's just how they have been all year.

You and Coach can have a WQKT party listening to the teams still alive! Hopefully next year you'll develop a new act; this one "Village Idiot" has run its course!
