If by "not winning the big one" you mean the State Championship, then there would be an aweful lot of high school coaches getting fired. His record speaks for itself.

No no as I said yesterday don't give me the overall record nonsense! Really! 7-3 with all the D1 talent matched by NO other team in the OCC is unacceptable! He needs to go!!

No coach is going to take a true D5 team that doesn't recruit and compete against D1,2,and 3 teams for 7 weeks in a row in conference. If Orrville doesn't find a better fit they are looking at several years of 3,4,and 5 win seasons. Tradition will go out the window as the kids lose interest in getting beat by bigger schools.
Agree. This is happening right now in the middle school. Kids are getting smeared. I think 7th grade has 1 win. We're now equating competing, with success. It's not the kids' fault...they're giving it their all. But you're going to have kids choosing to do something else than losing 35-0 week in and week out.

    Let's review some recent history....

Coach Mac brought this school our only state title in 1998. Went to the finals in 94. Went to the final 4 in 1995 and 1999.

Those 4 teams were probably his most talented....and he got us 4 final four appearances out of that group, a runner up and a title.

Remember what happened when all of that "talent" graduated (or transferred to Massillon)?

    Who remembers 2001 & 2002?

2001 we were 2-8, scored 140 points for the entire season, 2 wins in the old OHC.
2002 we were 2-8 again. 1 win in the OHC.

Did Coach Mac all of the sudden become a terrible coach three seasons after winning a state title?? Or was the absence of a collection of talent just as big of an issue? He was a state title winning coach. Say what you will...but he'd been around the game enough to know how to coach a team. Is his legacy tarnished because he couldn't "coach up" those '01 & '02 teams that were obviously devoid of talent? Who remembers any impact players from those teams? I remember the QB's from those teams, but that's about it.

I think it's very similar to what we're seeing now. Numbers are down...collection of talent is in a dip...conference is strong...we're the smallest school in the conference...it is what it is.

another few paragraphs if excuses! How players did Coach Mac have that went D1? Davault had 5 on he same team a could never muster up anything better than 7-3. Again small school or not NOBODY in the OCC had that kind of talent!! Any other history lessons trying to prove worth of this guy???

That's part of the problem too. We need to get out of this conference. We're outnumbered & outsized against everyone.
First off I could not care less about a "conference championship" Probably because I never played in a conference so to me it is meaningless if they win it or not. I care about playoffs and beating Wooster. As far as the "talented" teams still not winning the OCC...don't you think there may have been reasons for that outside of coaching? Like kids getting busted drinking and the Coach sitting there butts out even if it cost them a win or two.

I don't know any coach that looks good when talent is not there. Lets look just at the talent that should/could be here that is not. Dyson-leading Wooster in rushing, Inmen sitting the bench at Massillon, Short sitting the bench at McKinley. You think those three alone would have helped this team to be better? I do! I also have heard that two of the three want to be back in Orrville next year. That would be six starters on this team...man maybe that would make a difference.

I don't know if Davault is the best HS football coach in the world...I do think he is good and every good coach has good people around him both in the coaching staff and on the field. Haley is a great D-coordinator and I hope he stays around for years to come. There are a few Haley's going to be playing in future years. I know this that Davault coaches football and teaches these boys how to give back to the community, work hard in and out of the weight room (lives it for the boys to see it). He has no power to make any of them do anything. If he tried many of the parents would complain that it is "to hard or not fair" Look at Series he is still crying.

Bottom line talent has to be there to win and this team winning 4 games was some damn good coaching. One play away from WH win. I also don't know many teams that win with 45 yards rushing and 6 turnovers...

I know this won't amount to a hill of beans for those on either side...but it sure sounds like our coach has the respect of his fellow OCC coaches.

Here is a statistic! How many players did Coach Mac have that went D1? I believe Davault had 5 on the same team and couldn't muster up any better than a 7-3 record. Excuses running strong in the ville! Maybe some of you should start attending the road games too so you would have more opportunities to see his lack of leadership!! He needs to go!!

Better question is how many did Mac have that should have? Davault is getting his kids to college and that has to count for a lot. Mac was in a different era and had many that could all thing equal to today.

This is VERY true, RRN you can call me and I can give you some examples that would SHOCK you for sure! Devault works hard at getting his kids to the next level. ANYWAYS... I just remember the positive posts when we were winning and how everyone seemed to think the team and playcalling was pretty good.... now its C R A Z Y around here.... Orrville has been seriously blessed with talent over the years. No question about it. Lets see if the coach can pull the rest of the season together. Very sad to hear about the Jr. High getting smoked... Those kids probably won't be around long.

I like the idea of a new league or joining one that already exists. I also like what Loudonville is doing...they play in a 4 team league. I think we could do the same with some of the local independents in our area such as Northwest, Barberton, CCC, and St. Thomas Aquanis. We could still play a local non-league schedule with Triway, West Holmes, Wooster, etc.

However, we are in the OCC for now and have to deal with it. Unfortunately, our pee-wee teams play a majority of the WCAL schools and then have to make the OCC jump in middle school...thats quit a jump and probably a SHOCK to those young boys.

For what its worth....I did hear that John Marshall has already backed out of next years game so we are in need of a week 1 opponent for 2014.

Another note....we are still in the playoff picture!!!! Two games left and BOTH ARE MUST WINS!!! But...Clear Fork is MUCH better than Madison and are playing good ball right now. Wooster is a toss up..IMO!!! We will need some help in the way of our opponents getting us wins and the teams above us dropping a game in the next 2 weeks. Is it possible??? YES.

    GO RED RIDERS!

Don't get me started on the pee wee topic! I could go on and on about NOT Liking IT! Not to mention that I don't believe it helps the program and in fact feel it hurts it. Different day for that.

Sanitizer no disrespect to you as you know I love ya brother and I know you don't get an opportunity to attend many games but you would certainly understand what I mean if you did. Teams are a reflection of their leader and in the biggest game this team had in the last 2 years they played with zero energy and emotion. I don't relate with that kind of thing! If a coach can't get a team motivated for a game like that then he neds to go. I see it no other way. I will give you another example: a few weeks ago at West Holmes at halftime I went and used the restroom on the opposite end from the locker room. Afterwords I went to concession stand which was right by the locker room and the majority of the kids were standing outside the locker room just talking and joking with some of their friends and parents. Most of our coaches were standing there too and I thought hey were in line At the concession stand. They should have been in that room fixing the issues! Instead it was like nobody cared. Perception is reality and this team has got worse throughout the season and most look like they can't wait until it's over. I'm not the only one seeing it trust me on that. I had a very interesting conversation recently with a kid's dad that just graduated 2 years ago and he echoed my thoughts. I will give you he D1 argument but we all know Coach Mac wouldn't stand for all the nonsense that goes on nowadays!!

After what you supposedly saw at the WH game, they played arguably their best half of football all season. So what's your point exactly?

You can't take a snapshot of a few minutes in time and make a broad brush statement about the coach/staff/players.

Coaches prep Saturday through Thursday for a few hours on Friday night. None of us see that...but you seem to have it all figured out.

We're "regressing" because we're playing teams twice our size for 7 straight weeks. A team like Triway is "progressing" because they stopped playing OCC teams like us & West Holmes in the preseason and started playing teams their size.

Our coaches aren't perfect, but their combined years playing football & coaching it will put us all to shame. We sit around & play Madden football video games and think we can do it better.

Madison was the second worst team we have played to date but I wouldn't expect you to know that since you are a fan that only goes to home games. No wonder you spouted off earlier in the year about attending games is not supporting! It's because you are a real homer literally! Have your opinion of again whatever your point is but you and I both know this guy can't win here! Unless of course you consider 5-5 winning!!
And triway is getting Better and playing and beating teams much better teams than mansfield Madison. I love your excuses because you have always been full of a lot of them!

And no I don't play Madden football games! That's for 10 year olds.

I totally respect your opinion, but just wait until your son is old enough to play flag football and tell me if is productive or just the opposite. My oldest son has played it the last 2 years and its light years away from what it was when Jerry Lane ran it. Its just an elephant and a tent away from a circus!
I like pee-wee and the numbers are good. 4 total teams from 4th to 6th grade. Thats more than any level at the higher grades just by numbers! Junior high is when we start losing kids!

Im with ya there! Dont own a playstation, xbox, or whatever console it takes to play that game. Unfortunately, its not just 10 year olds playing but also high school kids who find it easier to put a remote in their hand than an actuall football!

Went to Triway & Senior. Those were away games. GFY with that homer crap. What's that again about being a homer? Didn't go to Madison because it was my anniversary..yes some things are more important...we can't all drop everything to pregame at a bar & bad mouth a high school football team..or the officials...depending on the night.

Is the Davault era going to be part of your book?? Should be a good read.

Really? Yes for home games I try to pregame at Jerry's to support YOUR local economy. GFY!! Hey I was at Dravenstotts last week and they are fresh out of Orr Views! Can you call the editor or whomever and make sure they get fresh copies? Ya my book will talk about Davault in fact I have a whole chapter about it talking about how tradition in Orrville consists of Red Riders Sports blog and a good nap on Friday nights!! GFY fella!!!!!

    Can't wait to read it.

You still haven't answered my question about the 01 & 02 Mac teams...were the back to back 2-8 teams a few seasons after a state title & a final 4 due to poor coaching or lack of talent?

You know the answer but it doesn't jive with this little rant you're currently on so you act confused as to the point I'm trying to make.

Hey I heard your website crashed today! It couldn't support the 3 people that have viewed it since 2009!!! GFY don't screw with me!

I will answer that when you answer the one that I asked 2 years ago-why was Davault throwing the football in the playoff game against Triway with 1:44 on the clock winning and Triway had NO timeouts??? Good football IQ! Maybe you have had that scenario in your Madden game??
