2013 Orrville Red Riders football
-
rrfanSeries I played four years and food was never given to us by an opponent. If it is a scrimmage it can happen. When we played Cleveland Rhodes our booster club fed them after the game. That is the only time I can ever remember that happening. Who cares about this anyway? What are you trying to say/do here?
-
Old RiderThe Orrville parents feed Orrville players after the game "out of their own pocket". They do the same on Thursday evenings when they not only feed the team, but coaches as well. Again, out of their own pocket. I believe we have fed teams in the past, only to get the shaft when we visit their place the next year.
Back to football...Zook practiced with the defense yesterday and we should see him in action on Friday against Louisville. I was also told that in punt situations we will not be lining up in a true "punt formation". We will stay in our normal offensive set and force their defense to guard us and if not...we run a play or rugby/pooch punt with the QB. I like this because it forces the defense guard everyone and makes it almost impossible to put a return man back.
Haven't heard much more about the other special teams. -
5knotsI'm pretty sure the Booster club provides at least pizza and drinks for most all our visiting opponents. Including scrimmages. It is a nice gesture of sportsmanship. games end late and teams generally travel far....kids are hungry afterward and need to refuel.
Orrville parents have been organized since coach Davault took over and feed our team after away games. I can't really give this credit to Coach Davault (nor would he want it) but to Diana Simmons and that group of very active parents that really set the tone for the past 6-7 years. Bowmans, Simmons, Kleinfelters, Hedbergs, Weemans, Thomas'.etc...they were very involved parents. Mansfield Senior has a great booster club and they always gave our kids a hot dog, drink, bag of chips after the game when we played there. They were the only ones. Northwest....Ha Ha....they went out of their way to make it as difficult as possible to get our vehicles close to the locker room to feed our team after the game. Heck, they made my 89 year old with a handicap pass park 1/2 mile away! -

I think you might see some different rotations on the front three on defense, glad we have one more scrimmage, gives the coaches a chance to get the bugs worked out.Old Rider;1489000 wrote:The Orrville parents feed Orrville players after the game "out of their own pocket". RIDER DADAnyone in the know, have a report on the Triway, Northwestern scrimmage, I know Northwestern should be pretty good this season. I heard that Triway had all it could handle with Northwestern, but I heard that third hand, Just wondering if any Wayne county league people would chime in, or any Orrville folks have any info?
-
RedRider1I heard similar things RIDERDAD. They still have the Carmichael kid and with the right weapons, it's a dangerous offense, but the question is did they lose too many weapons & guys up front?
Thanks for the clarification on the feeding stuff. I didn't know we fed teams as a habit...but knew we weren't getting fed at Northwest or Wooster or the majority of teams on our schedule.
Interesting read for those wanting to keep tabs on Bryce's progress over at McKinley. Sounds like he's seeing time at QB, but from some of the comments, doesn't read like he will be their starter in week 1. He may be the backup though & with Glover-Williams a mobile QB, Bryce may only be a play away from being the starter.

I heard about the same as well. But none of that will matter in my opinion. They want nothing more than to beat us 2 yrs in a row and break in their turf the same way they broke ours in. The place will be buzzing and I am sure they will have some huge ceremony prior. Its how our kids respond and approach that game. I would expect an angry Red Rider team hungry for a little revenge. I hope the coaches really push the kids that week and get them focused on winning a game and dont get distracted with all the hype leading up to it. With all that said...lets get a week 1 win first! Agree. A little extra emphasis is needed for this one. It's surely circled on their calendar. Needs to be the same way on ours. It's the 2nd most important game on the schedule next to Wooster in my opinion. -

Don't worry about the kids, last year has not slipped their minds at all !!! If history has taught anything we don't look past Triway, we have a healthy respect, but I think the boys would like to get that bad taste out of their mouths. we need to get through the scrimmage and week 1, it should be a good game for week two.Old Rider;1489091 wrote:I heard about the same as well. That's the game to tell the area that we're back.
Sure hope that happens. -
HumbleButHungry01Does Orrville really only have 28 TOTAL kids out for high school football or is that some sort of joke or exaggeration?? I sure hope that is not the case. smh

Probably had 20-some kids at a 7-on-7 & people took that as it was all we had. We have low 40's but that's also counting 10 or so freshman.
It's a low number for sure but its not 28. -

Ok thats good...i know they (we) are witnessing some hard times right now but I was going to say I didn't think things had gotten that bad with that many kids losing interest in the best sport on earthRedRider1;1489538 wrote:Probably had 20-some kids at a 7-on-7 & people took that as it was all we had. I think #'s are down all over the place. Of course our soccer program has never had better numbers. Full JV & varsity program. Used to just have enough kids for a varsity team. -
Havin FunSoccer and the new concussion rules will impact the smaller schools for sure. Soccer takes away maybe 5-7 kids who could actually contribute to a football team. Couple that with the new concussion policy which will keep a kid out 2-3 week on average and you could see some issues.
I would not be surprised by mid-season if some JV games would not be canceled within a year or two due to numbers at some schools. -

No freshman team for us this year...I think that's been the case a few times over the last 5 years or so. When we have had frosh teams, it's been barely (16 kids or so).
I think we've got kids playing soccer that had they been in flag & tackle football since grade school, they'd be contributing football kids. But they've been dedicated soccer kids since they were 6, and it's their only option.
Interesting point about concussions. Pay to play could also impact sports participation among all sports too. -
Old RiderAnother factor is the parents. Some will push their child to soccer just because it is not as physical as football and the chance for their child to get hurt or sustain a major injury in soccer is less likely as well. The concussion topic will scare some parents and that too will give them more reason to push a different sport on their child.

rrfanSoccer hits the ball with the head and does not have any helmet on...Just saying that is very dangerous...Get those kids out for football and we will protect their head with a helmet...

Not to mention has anyone ever seen more than one kid go for a header at the same time? There are PLENTY of concussions in soccer as well, so that's no excuse not to play football.rrfan;1489832 wrote:Soccer hits the ball with the head and does not have any helmet on...Just saying that is very dangerous...Get those kids out for football and we will protect their head with a helmet... -

I actually saw a stat before that listed soccer as having more concussions than football. I wish I could remember where I read that.Dr. KnOiTaLL;1489836 wrote:Not to mention has anyone ever seen more than one kid go for a header at the same time? I agree that there is really no excuse not to play football other than just pure disinterest because from the numbers that i've seen posted the whole concussion issue doesn't seem to be affecting other area high school football participants...i wonder what really is the issue that this tradition rich school does not have many kids going out for football anymore..when i was coming through high school in the late 90's and early 2000's i don't ever remember a freshman team having less than 30-35 people now we have 6 at Orrville? RIDER DADHas anyone seen the new program that the schools are using call huddle (not to be confused with JJhuddle), coaches can send video to other team and players by way of theinternet, what a great tool for the kids, my son has been watching the Minerva scrimmage, on the I pad, has all the features of a video, zoom, slow motion, coaches can send particular plays they want the player to look at or upcoming games. This technology has been around for a while, it nice to see it being put to the proper use with football.

I think I read that somewhere as well. I'm sure some parent advocate will push for helmets for soccer players or something similar to what they where for lacrosse.rrfan;1489841 wrote:I actually saw a stat before that listed soccer as having more concussions than football. Just ban all contact football and start playing flag football, but with full pads...would hate to see someone get a boo-boo
