Campbell Memorial Red Devils Off Season Thread! 2013

i do find it mildly funny that the football players that are playing basketball often say this is the hardest theyve practiced and lifted. not a good sign what is happening down there.
  • Spread All Day
Yeah let's bash Zetts... The reason why your offense was what it was. Makes sense.
  • omemorialhigh
youre right lets bash sikora lol hey your the one who was on here for a year saying he was leaving dont hate on us because we wish he would! unless now youre going to suggest the buck doesnt stop with the head coach? now that youve vindicated zetts do you wish to vindicate sikora? do we put 100% of the fault on the players? at your alma mater ursuline they have seem to done a pretty good job controlling inner city kids and winning correct?
  • omemorialhigh
you have to have good kids, but a 16 yr old kid will get away with what you let him get away with. ive dealt with inner city kids theyll test your limits every second of everyday. as you have noted, sikora had his chances to leave and didnt. do you think he shouldve passed up those opportunities? and do you really think IF he stays its not because a lack of good openings? all you pro sikora guys are fooling yourself. if he gets another offer hes taking it. but i highly doubt anyones knocking down his door.
  • Spread All Day
Struthers is my alma matter for the last time hahaha.
Sikora has done a great job at CMHS! With the kids he has to deal with dayin and day out.... The kids didnt even show up to summer conditioning. Coaches can only do so much.

Soup i have the 89 season 86 90 Rozum years. i don't have the 88.. god i wish i did. i had a full order in for the rest of Rozums season. even early 80''s and the 99 season. but before coach got to them he passed away... i have not called the school to see if they still sell them. thanks for asking... I'm gonna give a call after the holidays! ill start working on all the playoffs games including the dreadful 90 playoff and the 89 state game. now what state game should i post? the sports time Ohio TV game or coaches tape?

Edit: I forgot to mention i also have the 1964 SVC Championship Season. I think i have put up 3 games of that season. But there are 4 or 5 games missing on the DVD. Cause from what i was told a few games are in bad shape and could not be transferred to DVD as well as just plain old missing.

And if anyone wants to know how i feel about if there was a chance for Rozum to come back. I would support it 110%! He does not have a state runner up championship' and many MVC Companionship for nothing. Rozum just can plain take a team that has some talent and get the best out of each and every player. Even with the very few losing season he had endured. Those other teams walked of the field respecting Campbell. And what needs to be taught is something that has yet to be taught. Respect for the game and your coaches. I have not seen that since the 2010 squad. That squad was full of leaders and winners. And the coach didn't teach them that. They already had it. that's what made that team good. They had each others back. They came to each game fired up. Not all them. But the seniors did. every one of them. That team was the best team so far since 99. And don't get me started on the 99 team. Yes they had some talent. But Rozum Squeezed all the talent out of each one of them and more. The team before and after was not coached good at all. Very weak coaching on the 98 and 2000 squad. Im not throwing the coaches under the bus. That is not like me. I'm glad we had Sikora to keep what Bayuk started rolling. But i never can understand why the offence is good one week. And look very weak the next. You can only blame the ones in charge of running the offence. And the defense Blaaa. Plain and simple. NEED A BETTER COACH FOR THE DEFENSE!!

Devil and Christmas should never be used in the same sentence! Haha

Looks like struthers won't be winning many games this year after getting upset by the devils

^ I told you the basketball team was awful
  • reddevil90
Any news on the coaching front? And what is the projected starting line up this fall on both sides of the ball. Lost a good deal of size on the line. And i don't see a slow devils offence.

Zetts is gone. Don't know who'll be replacing him at offensive coordinator yet though.

Zetts is gone????? That's not bad news at all... I hope we have some better offensive attack this year.... But still i cant see anything but a another let down this year. we need a better defensive coach. We have given games away to many times....

We been spoiled at the QB position over the years. Who is taking over? one of the Hughes? Its gonna take some real big shoes to fill with Reyes graduating!!!

LOL ^ The man who made your offense flow for the past three years...

    Good for him I guess.

    Come on home

I'm from Steubenville Big Red. I would like to share a story. You won't like it, but you will find it to be interesting. About 15 years ago, Campbell and Big Red signed a two-year contract, home and home. But the two coaches made a gentlemen's agreement to play both games in Steubenville and that Campbell would get a nice paycheck for coming here. The first game was played in Steubenville. Then the Campbell coach was fired. His replacement refused to go along with the tacit agreement and insisted that the second game be played at Campbell. Our coach agreed but with one stipulation. He insisted that we keep all the money for tickets that we sold at our school for the game. The Campbell coach agreed and Big Red played up there that year. The Campbell coach thought that we would bring about 300 fans for a total payout of $1500. Instead we brought 3000. There were only about 2000 people on the Campbell side. We not only won the game but we took home a check for $15,000. It was the biggest payout we ever got for an away game. Campbell hasn't scheduled us since.

    Thanks for sharing that!

I remember those two games. They were in '94 and '95. The first game was at Harding. The second was indeed at Campbell. I remember talking to Big Red fans at the game in Campbell and they were stating that Memorial Stadium was quite similar to Harding and they loved the setting. Little did they know but the stadium was in the process of falling apart. It has since been renovated and is now one of the better stadiums in the Youngstown area, although 7,200 seats is far too many. The late Mickey Soroka was the Campbell coach in 1994, which was his only season as a head coach. Mickey was a long time assistant to Ed Rozum, who had built the Campbell program into a state power in the 1980's and early 1990's. When Rozum resigned following the 1993 season, Soroka took over. Soroka did not get fired. He resigned on his own. Campbell traveled to Steubenville in '94 with several starters injured and/or not permitted to play because of a violation of team rules. What was supposed to be a big game that season was an embarrassment for Campbell and its fans. Big Red won 36-6. Reno called the dogs off at the end of three quarters or it might have been worse. A circus clown of a coach named Mark McCann took over at Campbell in 1995. I recall McCann stating at the gridiron meeting prior to the Big Red game that Campbell had no business playing Steubenville. What a vote of confidence that was for his players. I believe Big Red won that game by a very similar score to '94. While his players ran gassers during practice, McCann would smoke cigarettes while watching them. In my opinion, the biggest reason why Campbell and Big Red do not play each other is because of the two embarrassing losses Campbell suffered in those two years. Big Red's program has flourished. Steubenville plays disciplined and physical football. Campbell did, once upon a time. Campbell's program was a joke for quite some time, although there have been some good strides made in recent years. I am a longtime Campbell fan from way back. And despite the program being on what many consider a pace to being one of the best small public school programs in the Youngstown area, I disagree. The league Campbell is a member of is mediocre. Despite winning or sharing three conference championships in recent years, the Red Devils have not made it past week two of the state playoffs. I believe if Campbell and Big Red had played games in the mid 1980's to early 1990's, there would have been very entertaining and close games between the two schools. Both programs were very similar back in those days. Campbell has quite a bit of work to do if it expects to get on the field with Steubenville in the future. Campbell is a small D-5 school these days. Big Red would not have much to gain by beating Campbell anyway.

Well, it's true that Campbell has never been very competitive against Big Red. Our games go back to 1960. But we Big Red fans always enjoyed playing Campbell and we have the utmost respect for your team. I wish you the best of luck in 2013.

The 89 team was a DIV 3 school! Yes we did play in Div 3. And i think Big Red was Also and still is DIV 3. But the from 85 on to around 92 Campbell could play with the best of the best. A lot of Youngstown Area teams just Kicked ass during those years. Struthers was always a good team Back then. Girard. Niles and Warren JFK. And we played anyone no matter what. We just owned Youngstown Schools back in the 80''s and early 90's'. Im proud to say this every time. and if you say its not so. then you are just crazy. But Campbell was feared by all. Our conference feared us. So Independent we went for many many years. and have faulted to a Regular small school football team. The Mill shut down and that Hurt Campbell After the mills closed it took a few years for it to start showing on the football program. Bet if the mills was still kicking Campbell would still be a Powerhouse. MY Opinion only.

I agree with your opinion. The same thing happened in the Steubenville area. When I was growing up, the mills were booming and my father had a very well-paying job. My parents gave me unlimited opportunities to go to college. What my scholarships didn't pay for, they did. I now have five college degrees and I have never had a cent of college debt.

I regret that those days are gone forever. The folks in Campbell and Steubenville no longer have the chances that my father had. Now mind you, he had a very rough job in the mill. It was hard and it was dangerous. I will never forget the stories he told me about guys getting killed or maimed. He only had one job in his life and it lasted 43 years. I was glad to see him retire. But that's the way it is in mill towns. My father was the only real man I ever met. He worked hard to put me through school. He took incredible care of my mother when she had open heart surgery and when she lost a breast to cancer. No wife ever had a better husband and no son ever had a better father. He died four years ago at the age of 96. I truly miss him.

I think you're missing my point. I'm not asking people to feel sorry for me except that I lost Dad. I simply posted this as a tribute to my wonderful parents who sacrificed to make my life better. I know they are in Heaven. I hope to meet them there some day.
