Campbell Memorial Red Devils Preseason thread
-
reddevil90The old thread was just that. I figure lets start a new one for the 2012 season. Lets talk about all things from The turf to the team rumors or anything on players that could impact the team this year.
I have said that i think football should be played on grass. But after thinking it would be nice to see the school save money and possibly bring in some playoffs to the city. We do have the stadium to host many area playoffs.
Also not sure about the outlook of the team this year. But it does look promising! Got some great retuning players. Size and skill. We definitely are going to miss our kicker. he has to be the best i have seen since i could remember. Reyes should continue to get better. My opinion is he was at his best on the run. He just could throw a strike off his back foot. Lines will have size but not sure how good we will be on both sides. But i do hope we don't blitz on every down again this year. Someone said they need to read plays. and that's something that cant be taught. its a instinct. Hope we have a few players that have the ability. Go Devils. -
BTrevI was waiting for a thread like this to start.

BigDean1Based on what we witnessed at the end of last season, here is a list of players who are EXPECTED to be in the mix for Campbell. I emphasize EXPECTED. I never bank on anything until the last scrimmage is over and the roster is set.
QB - Brandon Reyes
OL/DL - Sean Burnett
OL/DL - Shaquan McWilson
OL/DL - Dre Kelly
OL/DL - David Horvath
OL/DL - Ryan Kelly
FB/LB - Charles Smith
FB/LB - Shamar Robbins
FB/LB - Adrian Brown
RB/DB - Desean Johnson
WR/DB - Braylon Wigfall
WR/DB - Corey Hamilton
WR/DB - Ja'lel Shorter
Watch out for:
OL/LB - Steve O'Dea
WR/DB - Edthanial Tarver
RB/DB - Brandon Jackson (transfer from Youngstown Liberty)
RB/DB - Nick Lyras (a transfer from Mooney, played only a little last year)
WR/DB - Motrel Hughes
RB/DB - Myckle Hughes
RB/DB - Mike Williams
As has been for the past few seasons, Campbell has some talent, good size, and plenty of speed. The question is which of the seniors will hopefully step up and become leaders. The defense still needs to improve. Lack of senior leadership was a huge problem last season, and was a big factor as to why such a talented team failed to make the playoffs. The schedule is a little tougher this season than in the past couple of years. -
omemorialhighMotrell wont be a football player and they will be a better team without him. cut out the disease, dont let it fester like last year. imho he needs to go asap. first slip i say hes got to be gone...the kid is a constant distraction and probably wont be eligible anyways. on a side note...jales hughes and gabe smith were causing so many problems at the high school that the administration had enough and gave them the choice of expulsion or finishing their high school year at the mall school. they chose the mall school.

Hmmm That does not seem to suprise me one bit. I would have thought that one more name would have been added to that.omemorialhigh;1075266 wrote:Motrell wont be a football player and they will be a better team without him. cut out the disease, dont let it fester like last year. imho he needs to go asap. first slip i say hes got to be gone...the kid is a constant distraction and probably wont be eligible anyways. on a side note...jales hughes and gabe smith were causing so many problems at the high school that the administration had enough and gave them the choice of expulsion or finishing their high school year at the mall school. they chose the mall school.
I agree with everything Dean Said. I made a big headed mistake last year. I chose to believe in the team on paper. By all rights this team was extreamly gifted. But well we all seen what happen. I will not ever make the same prediction and hype again. EVER!!! But it looks like a nice core returning. IF THEY PLAY!! I have also heard Motrell was a problem and hardly ever showed up for practise anyways. This is coaching issues!! They made there bed with those players last year. I still to this day dont know how Number 5 made it past the 3rd game in a devils Uniform. Hell he should have never played in the last game or even been on the sidelines.
Also one i am excited to see O'Dea Start some games this year. My brother talked about how his dad was a beast. I dont know much about the transfers from Liberty other then one of them is extreamly fast. -
Spread All DaySpoke with a new coach for the red devils a few weeks ago. He seems really excited to see how things turn out this year.

The whole attitude is different than last year. I hate to say the coaches lost control because they didn't really. Those few should've been gone and I would have gladly sacrificed a few wins to have a team full of kids whose heads and hearts were in the right place.Spread All Day;1075413 wrote:Spoke with a new coach for the red devils a few weeks ago. This team is working their butts of in the weight room and Burnett and McWilson along with Horvath have been leading the way big time. Most days the seniors are the last ones to leave. If we had this type of senior leadership last season we would have blown away teams instead of opportunities. -
omemorialhighinteresting...good to hear...but i will believe it when i see it. that spread is saying something good about campbell makes me feel weird lol

Spread All DayAs long as you have real leadership on the field, weightroom, and classroom, you should be fine.

reddevil90I just hope we can get more then 400 fans out at a few home games this year. I don't even think we got that many on the home side last year. I'm sitting here thinking about this for some time now. When was the last time i could remember seeing the stands at more then half full? I can only think of one time and that was the 1999 Struthers Campbell playoff game at Knapick Field!!! and before that had to been in 94! that's when it attendance took a horrible nose dive if i am correct!

It's a big stadium and will be very tough to fill up no matter what the circumstances are. Just my opinion. I was among those in attendance in 1971 for a Campbell-Ursuline game. 10,000 people were there. It was very, very loud. That was when the actual seating capacity was just 6,000. That was the biggest crowd I ever saw in the stadium. Now the capacity is over 7,000. And the population of the city is smaller. Much smaller. Many things have changed.reddevil90;1080196 wrote:I just hope we can get more then 400 fans out at a few home games this year. I don't even think we got that many on the home side last year. Dean i wish i could have been there to see that!!!! That had to be exciting and a sight to see!! I could only imagine that cause the largest Campbell crowed i ever been in was 3 games!! The 3 games are the 3 playoffs games in 89. Mooney Ursuline and Ironton state game. The Biggest home game was that i remember was the 1990 JFK and Struthers game. after it seemed to die off!! But i do know after Rozum stepped down after the 93 season is when fans dropped off during the 94 season. By the last game of that year i remember walking into the stadium for the last game i turned to my Brother and mom and we all said what a shame. Nobody showed up but about a few hundred people. A far cry from the years before!!
Edit!! I forgot to mention that the last game in 94 was not against Struthers as had been for many years before. I was told by my father who lived in Campbell since the early 50's and attended as much Campbell games as he could "with working a grueling mill schedule back then" was always filled or almost filled! Even during those almost 3 winless seasons. -
omemorialhighwell see what kind of heart this team has after the first game of the season...if i were a player the struthers game alone would motivate my whole offseason regimine. but thats me...

devils89I beleive the devils are going to be very skilled this year with more weapons than they really know what to do with and i know the devils have been working hard so far this offseason in the weightroom and with additional exotic trainings they have a lot of returning starters and players like reyes wigfall brown robbins mcwilson johnson horvath burnett hamilton tarver and more but they also have a really talented freshman class coming up with kids like odea rusnak ditman hughes morris and the balas twins who could see a lot of playing time goodluck next season devils !
