WHAT A MORON !!Talk about lack of class . really !!!Waynes World;1313819 wrote:WCAL is a bush league. The fans from Norwayne, Smithville and Northwestern lack class, brains and the will power to have only one sandwich. If there isn't a big & fat store in all of these places, someone is missing out on some major profits.
Rittman, Dalton, Chippewa and Waynedale should become soccer schools because american football is absent at these places. The truly funny thing here is only one of them can get last place. All would be last in most bad small school conferences.
Is Hillsdale even in Wayne County? I'm sure Orrville is and they would fit right in to this pathetic conference. The amusing fact about that is the Red Raiders couldn't win the WCAL either.
The WCAL should thank its lucky stars they have Norwayne. It's their only hope of success in football and they are lucky they are riding that gravy train known as region 13. -

Old RiderI was curious to see how all the teams from Wayne County have benefitted (or not benefitted) from the OHSAA expanding to 8 teams per region back in 1999. So for whats its worth, here you go..
Prior to 1999 the WCAL teams had qualified for the playoffs a total of 12 times. Rittman(86), Smithville(84, 90, 94), Dalton(91, 92, 96), Waynedale(85, 92, 95, 97, 98).
Since 1999 the WCAL teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of 32 times. Rittman(05), Smithville(99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 11), Dalton(01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 09, 10), Waynedale(03, 07, 08, 09),
Chippewa(99), Norwayne(08, 10, 11, 12), Northwestern(05, 06, 07, 12), Hillsdale(09, 10, 12).
And if anyone gives a hoot...Orrville made it 14 times prior to 1999 and has made it 8 times since. I could care less about wooster! -

Wouldn't we need to know how many of the 32 appearences since 1999 were seeds 5 through 8 to get an accurate picture. Same with Orrvilles 8 appearences since the expansion. -

Part of this comes with being in a conference that is traditionally so competitive that its champ(s) often come out with at least one league loss. In an 8-team league, your schedule only has three games of wiggle room to look for strong opponents whose records won't be watered down with inter-league play by default.
How many times, for example, have we seen a WCAL team in a lower seed beat a team in an upper seed? Now, obviously, the more teams you let in, the lower the competition gets in round 1, and the fewer times you'll see that happening, but with only 4 making it in a region, it was very, very possible to go 10-0 and miss the playoffs. Since opening it up, however, only one team has gone 10-0 and missed. It also did allow the first 3-win team to make the playoffs, which allows for an unusually brutal schedule to still not ruin one's chances (that team, Walsh Jesuit of D2R5, was 7th in the region at 3-6, and actually lost by less than a TD to the #2 seed in round 1 of the playoffs).
This is a fair question as well. I decided to check what I could.Red Rum;1316111 wrote:Old Rider,

Smithville finished 5th in 1999 and beat #4 Delphos Jefferson before losing to #8 Sycamore Mohawk. (1 playoff win as a 5-8 seed team)
Smithville finished 5th in 2000 and beat #4 Hemlock Miller and #1 Ashland Crestview before losing to #3 Amanda-Clearcreek. (2 playoff wins as a 5-8 seed team)
Smithville finished 8th in 2001 and beat #1 Amanda-Clearcreek and #4 Sarahsville Shenandoah before losing to #2 Woodsfield Monroe Central (2 playoff wins as a 5-8 seed team)
Smithville finished 7th in 2003 and lost in the first round to #2 Warren JFK. (0 wins as a 5-8 seed team)
Smithville finished 5th in 2004 and beat #4 Columbiana Crestview, #1 Gates Mills Gilmour Academy, and #6 North Lima South Range to be regional champs before losing to Region 19 champ Amanda-Clearcreek. (3 wins as a 5-8 seed team)
Smithville finished 8th in 2011 and lost in the first round to #1 Bucyrus Wynford. (0 wins as a 5-8 seed team)
So, overall, Smithville has a playoff record of 8-6 as a fifth to eighth seeded team. Winning record and one regional championship that wouldn't have happened under the old format. More 2+ win playoff appearances as a 5-8 seed than 0 win appearances.
I didn't include years when they finished #1-#4. -
O-TrapFun fact: Smithville head coach Brent Besancon's first year as the head coach of Smithville brought a 5-5 season. In all of Coach Keith Schrock's years as head coach, he never once had a 5-5 season.

kurty66Thoughts on Norwayne/Liberty game:
Uniontown Lake is a neat venue with great atmosphere.
Liberty doesn't travel well and are pretty quiet. (Even early on - before the massacre)
Liberty band was fairly large and very good. More fans should have come just for them.
Liberty QB seemed to think he could shove Zimmerly aside while rolling out - those plays never ended well for him.
Walls, the quick lil Liberty back, never got much room to show his speed.
How is Joe Dreher only 2nd team WCAL? -

LOL! I certainly never said he did or would. I played under Schrock, and quite honestly, I see his relationship with WCAL football as I see Vince Lombardi's with the NFL.
I somehow knew this was going to be a blood bath. I've been waiting to go to a Norwayne playoff game that has the makings of a good game. Next week, perhaps, with Brookfield winning by almost the exact same score against Manchester tonight?kurty66;1317071 wrote:Thoughts on Norwayne/Liberty game:

Looking at those two scores, it is amazing to think that the two teams that lost these respective games tonight weren't even one-and-done teams. They'd each WON a playoff game!
I'm thinking the Region 13 chances to make a run are better than people give them credit for. There might have indeed been some weak competition through most of the region, but I'm thinking these top two teams can easily make a fight out of any game against any team in the division. -
oldsmithieThis week should be a stiffer test for the Bobcats, but something tells me another rout is about to take place! The difference this week will be the Norwaynes defense. The Bobcat defense is better than it was a year ago and that will make a big difference this week. prediction 42-14.
