I agree with most of this. Your QB did what he had to do to win the game....Btw, nice find, where did he come from? -

Just because Big Red gets their talent from elsewhere, doesn't mean all of the teams do. Has your QB packed up and moved back to Weirton yet or will he wait until graduation like your other Weirton recruit did?skank;969799 wrote:I agree with most of this. Can I call it. I have this game on tape and didn't want to know who won. You guys ruined it for me. :rolleyes:GRAYWOLF;967958 wrote:Very funny stuff. I find it amusing every time the red travels. It sounds like a major expedition to the Orient. With 8 home games these people don't get out of the village much. Good luck to both teams. I hope Dover gets to play one of you next week, maybe? If the red wins LOL no one will be able to live with them. Then again if they lose no one will be able to live with them. -
McKAlumni07I went to the game and it was intense... I've never seen the big red play... I saw mooney week one fight from behind to beat my bulldogs... I thought it was a great game and the calls were bad on both sides ... The saftey(he looked to b on the one to me).. And many other calls... I had a lot of fun and was happy to see a great game and not a blowout.. Congrats to Mooney..

Nice post and good comments on the game. I am just tired of these threads getting hi-jacked into Dover hasnt won anything and Massillon and Big red are invincible. Weird how both schools will be watching from home this week?McKAlumni07;969846 wrote:I went to the game and it was intense... I've never seen the big red play... He didn't take anyone down the field. He got a receiver laid out and the penalty yards got them to mid field. He under threw #14 who made a nice adjustment to get back to the ball. Then they got a 10 yard delay penalty after Big Red stripped the ball and didn't give the ball back to the ref fast enough.Rocket08;969793 wrote:I watched the game where your QB threw an interception to a wide open defender that led to a go ahead TD in the 4th qtr

That Big Red INT was a nice play by the back who recognized the screen set up and made a perfect break on the ball. I already called that the play of the game.
As for being dumb, go ahead and show me the rule where it is a penalty to make helmet to helmet contact. Those hits were not penalties because Murray lead with his arms into the chest of the receiver. Now if you want to discuss if hits like that should be a penalty in HS football that's something else entirely. -

In the first half and part of the third quarter, we were having success with rolling Prather out. On almost every big pass in the first half and the third quarter, we would get Prather on the move and out of the pocket. Toward the end of the third quarter and during the entire fourth quarter, Mooney began bringing pressure from the corners in an attempt to keep Prather in the pocket.killer_ewok;968893 wrote:I thought that Prather played really well. I was impressed. It seemed to me that when Big Red attempted to throw the ball late in the game...Mooney was dialing up the blitz and actually getting to Prather more than they did earlier in the game. I think that may be why we saw a more conservative approach from Steubenville. I thought Mooney's d-line got a better pass rush later in the game as well.
It threw us off at a pivotal point in the game. Our coaching staff adjusted on our last drive and we began attacking the middle of the field, which was wide open due to Mooney focusing on keeping Marcus in the pocket. That is where we had the majority of our success on that last drive.
It was a chess game and our staff had to adjust to some of the things that Mooney had done to adjust to the success that we were having in the first half.
At the end of the day, our offense put together a fantastic drive with the season on the line that resulted in the go-ahead touchdown. Our defense just needed one more stop and we couldn't do it.
I thought our staff did an amazing job. Mooney's run defense was just awesome. As a result, we had to do things which we hadn't done all year, which was to become a pass-first offense. We scored 20 offensive points against a damn good defense in the process. If you would have told me before the game that Big Red would score 22 points, I would have liked our chances with our defense.
Things just didn't go our way. Still, I was proud of the effort. This was not a team that was thought to be a contender before the season started or early in the year. Hard work and diligence by the players and the coaching staff resulted in a team that went toe-to-toe with a very good Mooney team and actually had them on the ropes for three quarters.
I will remember this team quite fondly.

Rocket08The interesting thing about this game is that good teams were VERY successful running against Mooney. I'm very (pleasantly) surprised that the run defense was so good last night.
I'm not so worried about the pass defense. We gave up a bit but had some huge picks
Big Reds QB was fantastic (as was their play calling)
At the end of the day though, discipline won -

We don't have the luxury of marching out 300+ lb. linemen and overpowering a big defensive line like Mooney. Our offensive line is successful with technique and finesse, not size... And, that works against most teams, just not the ones that out-weight you by 50 lbs. per man.
I also disagree that 'discipline won' last night. I watched Mooney either get flagged for or nearly get flagged for movement on probably 75-percent of their offensive plays. They flirt with it more than any team I have ever seen on any level.
Our defense completely shut down Mooney's offense from their second possession of the game until that long run in the fourth quarter which began their rally with a defensive line that was probably giving up over 50 lbs. per man to the offensive line. I don't think they ever even crossed onto our side of the 50 in that span, aside from a bad punt that put them at our 30 just before the half (a possession which ended in a forced fumble a couple of plays later). That was done through toughness, technique and, yes... discipline... Gap responsibility.
How anyone could watch that Big Red team for four quarters and conclude that they aren't disciplined is beyond me. Why? Because on one play late in the game after a controversial call, one of our players held on to the football for a couple of seconds longer than the official deemed necessary?
If there is one thing that we always have on our side, it is discipline.
That is the reason that, despite rarely lining up a big-time Division I collegiate caliber player, we are consistently amongst the best teams in the state. It isn't done through talent, but hard work, toughness and discipline. -

OVAC/Valley refs never call anything on their teams in OOC games (in Big Red's case, all of them basically since they play so many at home and OOC). I hated when we played at EL when I was in school for that reason.SUPER787;969403 wrote: On the so - called spearing, Murray has been hitting like that all year and has never had a call on it until this game. His technique is to keep both forearms across the chest; that's what caused the ball to pop so far up in the air on the hit on no.10: coming in under the ball.
Looking at he rest of Div.3, I expect Mooney to win the Div.3 Title.

As to whether this particular play was a penalty, the rule clearly states that when in doubt, it is a penalty....and since you seem to be the only person that thinks it was hands down a clean play (and plenty of other neutral observers disagree....iuncluding apparently an official in the stands), perhaps the play was in doubt and therefore it is a penalty.garweft;969925 wrote:As for being dumb, go ahead and show me the rule where it is a penalty to make helmet to helmet contact. Also, this is hilarious:
So apparently, Mooney wasn't disciplined on offense last night so they shouldn't be commended on that, yet Big Red should be commended on shutting down Mooney's offense from their second possession until the 4th quarter despite said Mooney penalties/mistakes.RedBlackAttack wrote:I also disagree that 'discipline won' last night. This post made me laugh. Too bad for Big Red you don't get wins for shutting a team down for three quarters. You have to do it for all four. I'm just shocked you didn't work in the "you had 49 rushing yards on play" garbage. I mean if you break a big play that shouldn't count right?RedBlackAttack;970247 wrote:You are talking about who being successful running against Mooney? St. Eds?

Mortgagestar1Reno would NOT last long in a competitive conference. That's why Steub left the old " All American Conference " 30 years ago. Now Reno schedules a so - so shedule. He wouldn't be close to 200 wins if he had Mooney's schedule. It is what it is.

I Am AhabI agree with the idea that Big Red would not be able to handle Mooneys sched. For all the recruiting talk about SHS they don't pull kids from as big of an area as Mooney (I'm speculating. And this isn't a subtle attack or recruiting accusation. It's open enrollment and if you have a successful program the athletes will come).
B/c Mooney draws kids from a bigger, more populated city they will always be bigger, deeper. Big Red played their toughest schedule in recent years in '09. I believe they went 9-1 but They got banged up too.
I used to be one of the biggest critics of Big Reds sched before 05-06. I think they could add one more Ohio playoff school along teams like Ursuline/ Massillon. I'd like to see them add another DI or DII school and it would do them good.
But a school in this area couldn't handle Mooneys sched. Big Reds sched does the job of getting them a 1 seed but they need to beef it up just enough to be able to keep a home game in week 11 and give them experience against a big physical, athletic team with a big physical line. Mooney is the team they're gonna have to get by to win the region so they need to find a team that mirrors them so they can figure out their weaknesses against such a team before the post season.
That said, Big Red should have won this game against CM. They gave CM too many yards on penalties, bonehead ones at that. And they had CM in a 4th n 7 with a chance to win it. CM made the play and SHS didn't. But in the future they need to get more experience against a bigger physical and athletic team like CM before the fact.
