Week 12... Steubenville(11-0) vs Cardinal Mooney(7-3)

BigYtownRedCouldn't make it tonight. Way to hang around & let the momentum shift back in your direction Cards. My buddy was @ the game (neutral fan) & said it was Big Red's to win but the Red got conservative in the 2nd & 3rd qtrs with great field position. You have to be foolish to let a team like Mooney hang around with the schedule they play. They can come back on anyone & have done it numerous times. Congrats Cards.
Ahhh the penalties. The Steuby announcers said on the -3 yd stop between the 20-25 that the ball came out & BR came out of the pile with it. When the refs said the runner was down someone must have spouted off.
Najee playin lights out & knockin dudes out. That will be OK with the buckeye fans next year. Of course it is cool when Zordich, Beachum or McCarthy do it, right?
Najee fun watchin you play since I saw you knock out Warren Harding kids the summer of your sophomore year. Hope you take full advantage of your skills & brains in college, too bad it isn't for the Longhorns.
Great job Prather. It started out shaky the beginning of the year but you blossomed big time. Hope that Houst gets a few nice house calls as well.
Will be on the Mooney side next week rootin for Dover to not get their first Regional title.
Go Cards
RRR lookin forward to the 2012 addition sorry this one had to end so soon thought you were goin to the SHIP. -

I've heard a few people say that Steuby's final TD was actually out of bounds. I didn't see it, but I'm waiting to hear on that one. If so, then that's a fair trade. LOL.ts1227;968672 wrote:I had fairly neutral observers at the game in my parents. Only tie my dad has to the game was he played under Reno as an assistant coach in 1972 at United Local, lol.
Anyway, he said the Big Red spearing call at the beginning of the final Mooney drive was BS, I'm interested to hear the opinion of others.
He also said the unsportsmanlike one at the end of the drive was warranted, as one player would just not shut up and was asking for it. -
Mooney44CardsI remember when the referees caused Mooney to convert on 4th and 7 with the game on the line. I also remember when the referees gave Steubenville a bad spot on their 4th and 5 play.
Guys, the refs sucked tonight, but they sucked both ways. Don't cheapen how great this game was with the questioning the referees excuse. -

Never saw any Mooney guy say Najee's hits were bad. Why the need for this line?BigYtownRed;968679 wrote:Najee playin lights out & knockin dudes out. That will be OK with the buckeye fans next year. Of course it is cool when Zordich, Beachum or McCarthy do it, right? -

I was at the game. He came down out of bounds. -

In all honesty...that really helped Mooney. If Steubenville got to run another play, Mooney may not have had enough time. I'm fine with the outcome. That just made the game even better!killer_ewok;968685 wrote:I was at the game. He came down out of bounds. -
I Am AhabKudos to Mooney. Sounds like they fought hard. Big Red played a great game by the sound of it but they had a chance to end it on the 4th n 7 and Mooney came up with the play. And then a long fg to win.
Go blow the doors off the trailer next week. -

It is implied by the KBN dudes who aren't biased toward Steuby, they are toward Mooney & they should be just like 106.3FM from Steuby is for Big Red. He's a heat seeking missle knockin cats out, the KBN crew is rootin for Mooney & I am sure they were in 07, 08 & 09. When those great players played, hence the comment. -
sherm03
First off, those are not Mooney guys. Those are Youngstown area announcers. No Mooney people said his hits were dirty. So quit getting your panties in a bunch. Secondly, they literally said they didn't think his play was dirty. So I don't still don't know why you make that comment.BigYtownRed;968703 wrote:"I thought the WKBN guys said "I'm not saying it was dirty, they just have to teach him how to hit without leading with his helmet."

ts1227Yeah, the radio announcers said that while the spear was by no means dirty, he lead with his head.

thePITmanWhat a game. Wow! Back and forth between two of the state's top DIII teams in the nation's top high school football stadium. A beautiful (yet cold) night of football.

Isn't that the only thing that counts. Hope you guys have a good dry cleaner in Steubenville. Like the new uni's. Maybe you should try to keep your players in check and you might have won this one. Good luck in basketball this year. Mooney just owns Steubenville. And Fecko owns Reno. -
OQBWow, great game!
This was one of the hardest hitting football games I've seen in awhile! -
2002sunsetThis was one of the greatest games I have ever witnessed. Hats off to Mooney. Steubenville did enough to win and I really believe they played the better game but all that matters is the score. This one hurts. The 3 hits by Big Red were unreal. If anyone in the D3 is better than either of these teams, I would be surprised.
-
genghis dongHAHA! Loved the Big Red fans booing the Mooney player while he was hurt. Guess you were right red and black you guys really know how to show an opposing team you respect them. Keep crying about the disrespect and we will enjoy playing dover next week. You know the same dover team you and your cronies talked crap about all week. They are still playing. Hope you guys get new Bball uni's

garweftIt was a good game, too bad it came down to some questionable calls on the last drive.

The spearing call your dad referred to was a bad call; picture perfect text book hit that jarred the ball loose. Steuby had several of those hits that jarred the ball loose.ts1227;968672 wrote:I had fairly neutral observers at the game in my parents. This game was lost on 3 straight penalties on B.R, with 1:40 on the clock, by the same bonehead. He claimed to have taken the ball from the runner and wouldn't give it back to the referee in time, so ref called a delay of game on this bonehead. Then he kept mouthing off at the ref and got two more unsportsman like penalties. Three by the same kid and just like that, Mooney is in field goal range with 9 secs to go and won the game. I have seen a lot of football in my days, but what this kid did to the rest of the team was plain stupidity.
NO CHEERS! -
Diehard Rider FanGreat game! The helmet to helmet call was absolutely legit, as well as the unsportsmanlike call on the last drive. Its a lot more about BR losing composure than it was about Mooney taking that game. The BR players seem way too high strung for a team thats been there before. That seems to come from the coaching staff as they were out of control, almost desperate, all game long. I commented to my son after the backward pass that was called incomplete by BR that there was a big difference in how each coaching staff was handling the pressure of this game and to expect Mooney to hang around and be in this thing at the end. As an outsider I would lay this loss on the coaches. The players seemed to play like the coaches coach. Just an opinion from an outsiders perspective.
-
oldsmithieIn all honesty the Big Red fans were not booing that a player from Mooney got hurt. The booing was for the call! The fans gave that player a round of applause when he got up! This was one of the best and most hard fought games I have ever witnessed!

Full ThrottleSuper 787,Your so right about #49 i beleive.Couldnt have picked a worse time to lose his composure.Sure did hurt the team.

killer_ewokQuestion....are helmet-to-helmet hits illegal in High School football?
Personally, I thought there were a lot of bad calls against Mooney. A backward pass by Big Red that should've been a fumble (and consequently a decent loss of yardage) was ruled incomplete. The one Mooney fumble...the ball carrier was clearly down prior to losing the ball. Depending on the rule....potentially some helmet-to-helmet hits early in the game by Big Red.
I don't know...seeing some complaining about the refs by some Big Red folks on Facebook/Twitter and wondering if they realize they got a lot of calls/non-calls that went their way.
Anyways, great game. Lived up to the hype. Both teams put on a show. Congrats to Big Red on a nice season. Good luck to Mooney going forward. -

Are you talking about when Big Red threw left to the flat and the ball was fumbled around a bit? That WAS a forward pass. It was attempted to be thrown in front of the receiver in the flats, but it was tipped at the line by a defender, altering the path of the ball, which would also explain why the receiver had to adjust himself to go back for the ball, thus causing the fumble/miscue. The initial direction/trajectory of the pass was forward, but went backward after being tipped slightly.Diehard Rider Fan;968831 wrote:I commented to my son after the backward pass that was called incomplete by BR... -

Was sitting relatively close to where that play happened. Must've missed it being tipped as it appeared to be an unaltered backward pass to me when it happened live. -
Diehard Rider FanOther than the one on the last drive I didn't see any others. The backward pass was definitely a bad call but it would have only yielded a 2 or 3 yd loss so pretty insignificant. I would like to see the replay on the fumble by #4, couldn't tell exactly when that ball came out. The ref on the Steuby sideline missed a bad facemask. Seriously though, with just 5 guys trying to keep up with 22 boys, they did a pretty good job.

Didn't Big Red pick up a 4th down conversion by the nose of the ball on the following play? Having a little trouble remembering if it was but if so, I'd say a few yards is pretty significant in that case.
