Week 12... Steubenville(11-0) vs Cardinal Mooney(7-3)

  • Diehard Rider Fan
Just meant it wasn't a turnover and it would have meant a couple yard deeper route. Nothing to get caught up in. I didn't see the tip as I was sitting right down the line of the pass and I didn't see the officials indicate a tip but I could've missed it.

Big Red was leading 16-7 with 10 min left in the game and had the ball and all the momentum. From what I witnessed, after the safety, Big Red let their foot off the gas so to speak on offense. They went back to a running game(27 Carries for 34yds) that wasn't there most of the evening. Mooney had trouble defending the pass all evening. Prather was getting plenty of time to throw. Why go away from the pass? They had Mooney on the ropes, and they let them off. The last 10 minutes of the game, Reno was outcoached. In respect to Mooney, Big Red didn't give it awy, Mooney just took it.

I thought that Prather played really well. I was impressed. It seemed to me that when Big Red attempted to throw the ball late in the game...Mooney was dialing up the blitz and actually getting to Prather more than they did earlier in the game. I think that may be why we saw a more conservative approach from Steubenville. I thought Mooney's d-line got a better pass rush later in the game as well.

Yeah, I can pretty much agree with that. Very good performance. Damn good.

That being said (gotta give props to Big Red's QB as well, great game), how about PJ Quinn? This kid just gets it done. He isn't a big stat guy but damn has he come a long way since I saw him in week 2 vs Boardman. Kid is just smart and gutsy and gets the job done.

Every year there is talk of one fan base booing an injured player, oblivious to any other circumstance, haha. Pretty sure I remember that happening in the 09 dOver smothering. It's usually by the butt hurt fan base whose team loses and they are desperately trying to cling to some reason why the other team is full of bad people. Not sure why it's goin on here. Maybe stupidity.

I wondered who these penalties were on for Big Red on the last drive. When I saw that it was 49 it didn't surprise me. Not only have I encountered this kid before but just watching the chest thumping, flexing, Etc that goes on after every play its not a shock that such selfish behavior comes back to bite the team in the end.
That is on the coaching staff for not squelching that from the get go. That stuff has been going on for a few years now and it seems like it started with a certain QB taking his helmet off on the sidelines when before you never saw a Big Red player with his helmet off. I didn't think it was allowed.

I don't remember that kind of behavior from the b2b teams. Except some taunting by Davis in the title game in 06. But that should all be stopped immediately. No one likes it, our crowd or outsiders.

On the other hand I can understand the frustration as I heard it was a takeaway on that last drive. But you have to be composed.

Looking at Mooney's schedule reminds us of The Red's schedules prior to 1980.

I'm surprised they couldn't find a better QB anywhere in the school. He stared down his primary; had a slow, deliberate delivery; and got his receivers laid out on more than 1 occasion. Watching him play I really know why Mooney is a running team. Griffin is a talented back and showed it on Mooney's 2nd TD, a nice cut back to find some running room and real good blocking up front to break that.

The play of the game was the INT that put Mooney inside Big Reds 5 with under 6 left to play.

On Big Reds last TD the kid did get 1 foot down before his body fell out of bounds. At the game it looked like he came down out of bounds, but I got to see it on TV, slowed down, from a side angle and the kid made a good play.

Murray didn't spear #14 on that call, he threw 2 forearms into his chest and dislodged the ball. There helmets made contact, but it wasn't a spear (leading with the top of the helmet). The call had more of a feeling of the ref feeling bad for the kid more than anything.

Yeah it sucks not getting the ball after the strip late in the game, but keep your composure and stay in the game. That was a costly mistake. Mooney still could have run the ball twice and made a FG to win it so....?? The kids played the game till the end and earned a win, simple enough.

The only thing I saw that I didn't like was Mooney's apparent lack of concern for the health of #10 after the big hit in the 1st quarter. He took his helmet off and laid on the ground holding his head and writhing in pain. Then 5 minutes later is back in when Mooney gets the ball back on O?? I have a hard time believing he was adequately examined on the sidelines by a qualified medical professional for a concussion. I really hope I'm wrong, but it sure didn't look good.

Personally, I thought there were a lot of bad calls against Mooney. A backward pass by Big Red that should've been a fumble (and consequently a decent loss of yardage) was ruled incomplete. The one Mooney fumble...the ball carrier was clearly down prior to losing the ball. Depending on the rule....potentially some helmet-to-helmet hits early in the game by Big Red.

I don't know...seeing some complaining about the refs by some Big Red folks on Facebook/Twitter and wondering if they realize they got a lot of calls/non-calls that went their way.

Anyways, great game. Lived up to the hype. Both teams put on a show. Congrats to Big Red on a nice season. Good luck to Mooney going forward.
There are no helmet to helmet and no unguarded receiver penalties in Ohio HS football. There is spearing which is leading with the top of the helmet.

There are bad calls and no calls in every game, nothing to complain about. Plenty of false starts by Mooney that weren't called, holding on both sides, and little here and there stuff that would even out in the end anyway.

It was a great game by 2 of the best programs in the state regardless of division. I wish the out come was a little different, but that's true of all but 6 teams at the end of the year. Here's to hoping Big Red can make it 12 straight playoff appearances next year.

Were you on the Mooney sidelines during the game? You have no idea what you are even talking about. Mooney had three doctors on the sideline last night. I'm sure he was adequately examined.

As for quinn say what you want, but he is getting ready for and getting ready to play next week

NFHS Point of Emphasis Rules wrote:Initiating Contact to the Head
    – It is illegal for a member of either team to use any other part of the body or equipment to initiate contact to the head. Contact to the helmet of another player could be one of the three specific illegal helmet contact fouls, or it could also be a personal foul for unnecessary roughness as defined by Rule 9-4-3g. This is not limited to acts by the defense (such as the defensive back making the "big hit" on the receiver, or the linebacker making the blow against a back out of the backfield), but such prohibition against contact to the helmet extends to all players on all parts of the field. When in doubt, it should be a foul.

Just so we're clear, the OHSAA is a member of NFHS and uses their rulebook.

Rules are only for other teams. Not little red. That is unless it is to their advantage. Like I said in an earlier post, just a "little" bit of discipline and this game goes in their win column.

Good observations. Channel 9 had some great shots of our receiver coming down in bounds with the ball. This kid has a great pair of hands and will be back next year.
On the so - called spearing, Murray has been hitting like that all year and has never had a call on it until this game. His technique is to keep both forearms across the chest; that's what caused the ball to pop so far up in the air on the hit on no.10: coming in under the ball.
Looking at he rest of Div.3, I expect Mooney to win the Div.3 Title.
    Cheers:thumbup:

He didn't INITIATE contact to the head.... he INITIATED 2 forearms into the chest, the helmets made incidental contact after the initial contact, that's not a foul. At best it falls under the when in doubt rule, ie. the ref felt bad because the poor judgement of a subpar QB got one of his receivers blown up for the 2nd time that night.

LOL at semantics and at you calling our QB subpar. With the game on the line he seemed to make all the plays while Big Red's QB practically handed Mooney the game.

Isn't that the only thing that counts. Hope you guys have a good dry cleaner in Steubenville. Like the new uni's. Maybe you should try to keep your players in check and you might have won this one. Good luck in basketball this year. Mooney just owns Steubenville. And Fecko owns Reno.

No reason to crawl and hide, Mooney won by keeping their head in the game and taking advantage of opportunities. That game could have went either way and someone had to lose. Big Red had plenty of opportunities to get off the field on that last drive and didn't. Instead they gave up half the field in penalties and lost.

I think that was quite obvious, but Mooney fans will definately see if differently.

I don't know what game you watched, but big reds qb looked a whole lot better on their last drive than mooney's did. There big mistake was throwing the ball like 5 straight times when they were deep on mooney's side with 2:30 left. 2nd and around 4 yards inside the 20 with just over 2 minutes to play.... run the ball once or twice and get some time off the clock.

I asked a question on Twitter and a buddy of mine who is a Big Red alum/fan and attended the game last night texted me this.....

"As for helmet to helmet in HS, I don't know the exact ruling, but there was an OHSAA official in the stands talking to guys in front me, and said that that first hit, could have warranted an ejection. He also said there are 2 people in the stands per official watching them. Those guys last night probably won't see another game this year."

I watched the game where your QB threw an interception to a wide open defender that led to a go ahead TD in the 4th qtr

I also watched a game where the Mooney QB took his team down on a drive that led to a winning FG

Next week I'll be watching a game, and I'll see that same QB again, because he led his team to a win
