Competitive Balance fails by close vote

OK, Let me see if i can post something, and not get bashed.

I STRONGLY disagree with my school not scheduling someone based on the "type" of school they are. I love that for 100+ years we have been known to "play anyone, anytime, anywhere". And then to "prove" a point, we dont schedule certain schools, I hate that. But this whole "competitive balance" crap, and public only playoffs, and blah blah blah is all just crap to me. I only have ONE problem with Ohio HS football playoffs:

8 teams making the post season!!!!!!!!

There is no reason teams that are 5-5 or even 6-4 should be making the playoffs. Take it back to the top 4 of each region.
1.) The season will be shorter.
2.) The season will be shorter
and 3.) THE SEASON WILL BE SHORTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No reason that footballers are still playing going into basketball season. Football should be done by Thanksgiving, not friggin Christmas!!!!!

I agree with you 100%. I also think that there are too many divisions. I would like to see 4 divisions like we have in basketball.

Yes, but I dont see them ever reducing the divisions. But the worst move they ever did was expanding the playoffs to the top 8 teams. SMH

I don't see them reducing the 8 teams either becaue it doubles the team in the tournament, and it is all about $$$$$. I think it is more likely that the tournament would be increased before it is reduced.

I know. It has always been about money. Not to turn this into a C-Bus vs Stark County debate,,,,,,,, But I think that is why it (State Championship Games) has been held in Stark for so long now. EVERYONE makes bookoo $$$$$$$$

But, going back to 4 teams per region is just me wishfully thinking!!! LOL

I agree 110% coyotes. I would see no problem at all going back to the top 4 teams per region. But as has been pointed out, it would be expanded before it gets reduced. Yes, it's about money. But it's also about the soccer mom mentality that everyone deserves a shot at the championship, even when they don't.

I wouldn't be in favor of going back to 4 teams per division. Last year in the finals, Wayne was an 8 seed in Region 4, Maple Heights and Coldwater were 5 seeds. The Harbins are way too imprecise to cut it off at 4 teams based on Harbins. You could shorten the season to 9 games and show some mercy to teams who don't win many. But cutting it off at 4 in very deep regions wouldn't be a great idea. I think the way it is now is just about right, with the exception that 15 games is a long time.

On the other hand, a team that survives that long really has accomplished something in winning. Why cut down the challenge? Play the best, beat the best and you can say you are the best.

Yeah. Cutting down to 4, while it would eliminate some of the lesser teams, would also eliminate some very good teams who happen to have a couple extra losses because they play in, say, the MAC OR are a smaller school in a conference with larger ones. The last two years, top-seeded North Union in one D5 region has been eliminated in the first round by an eight. And by the scores (23-0 to 5-5 Hamilton Badin and 28-3 to 7-3 St. Henry), you'd be hard-pressed to guess which team was the top seed and which one was the lowest seed.

This is true. By and large, we are not seeing Anything close to 5-8 seeds getting smoked. One year recently, all 4 lower seeds advanced in the first round in a region. I think 8 is about right given the system in place, if you add any you will start to get those predictable blowouts which shows you have added too many. The top 8 have regularly shown they belong, though.

I think this copetitive balance was a good idea . They need to keep pressing this thing everyyear until we have fairness

I dont even care . We won our title and our school got another two . To tell you the truth I dont care who we play . Bring em all on lets do it ..Aint scared to play anybody win or lose... I actually am thinking of alot of the other public schools especially at the lower divisions who may have a great team every 25 or 30 years like say Toronto back in 2000 when they could of maybe made state but by the time they played there 3rd playoff game they were alot thiner but had to play against a Newark Catholic team ,which for years has been the best team in the city of Newark ..How bout D-4 Kettering Alter who just kills D-1 Kettering Fairmont .. How about Delphos St John competeing for D-6 every year .. Nobody ever hears of Delphose Jefferson .. Wonder why ....If you want to talk about Mooney or Ursulin fine .. I cant say anything other than they have great programs ..They do what they have to do ,they get the best kids in Y town which is a huge metro area but yet they are smaller schools especially Ursulin .. I love when my Red takes on those guys .. win or lose I aint scared of them I played against Ursulin back in the day we beat them I remember playing Mooney and seeing them in the stands beat our arses . I cant stand them but that is a competetive thing .. I respect them for sure I do like to see them whip on out of state teams especially big schools I just think they should as well as many other teams moved up a division or two and guess what if the shoe fits and that applies to Big Red Im fine with it .. us and Mooney at the D-2 level is fine I am for competitive balance .. I have my championship I truely am thinking of the small town pubic schools the D-6 type Id liked to have seen Shadyside get a title and you cant call them a crappy team because they won 4 playoff games to get to the big one .. We at Big Red can take care of ourselves ,its our little public school brothers that I think about .. you can believe me or not dont really care

The problem with the small publics I've seen is that they beat up on one another but don't test themselves until the playoffs. When a team that's been playing against higher level (and higher division) competition plays against a team its own size that hasn't played against tougher competition, is it any surprise that the tested team wins? I'm thinking of Alter versus Carlisle or Massey. I can't explain Alter versus Alder that way, though. Alder usually plays up a little during the season. If you look at the leagues most smaller, rural teams play in, it explains a lot.

Shadyside would have gotten blown out by McComb.

Because they are not as deep as alot of strong private schools one or two injuries can wreck a whole season in some instances
