Competitive Balance fails by close vote

jock, get over yourself, the things you say in your posts is expected by every school. It's not like people are sitting around going, "wow, can you believe those Alter kids actually try?" "Can you believe those coaches at Alter actually make kids compete until the very end for playing time?"

And Molin, in your story, the part of "piece of mind", will be played by recruiting.

Once again, I'd ask you to prove it. But you won't be able to. All you can do is level accusations against a school based on nothing more than your hatred of the parochials. You will just point to every good parochial school and say they recruit.

I don't know why some of us even both with you. You have your mind made up. In skank's world, all parochial schools recruit and cheat and don't deserve the titles they win.

You must live a pretty sad life man.

Why don't they all do it, then? If you think all schools have the same level of expectations, or that all teams put forth the same level of effort or energy, or that all teams hit the weights with the same intensity, then that's why you believe the things you say. The NFL has a draft, with the worst teams allowed to pick first to equalize their odds of landing talent, and some teams consistently do better than others. Organizations, players, coaches and lots of other factors make huge differences. It's the same in high school. Programs that consistently win do that because they have put the pieces together. Even where, as in the NFL, you try to "level the playing field", the better programs win. If you don't understand that, which is obviously the case, you'll never understand why changing the rules to give the weaker teams a chance will never work.

They created a new title for him, so he basically was paid that much for coaching.

I think it's easier for me to prove that Harding sucks than you to prove Ursuline recruits. ;)

And by the way, Harding recruits like crazy

Disagree? ask someone from Boardman or Cortland

The point is nobody cares but you. I could care less if they paid him to be the study hall teacher. If they have the resources then more power to them. Most big public schools have excellent booster clubs and they can and do supplement a coaches contract. There is nothing wrong with that. Of course if a parochial school does it that's a horse of a different color, right?

Skank missed the point again. Bigdogg was insinuating that parochial school coaches get more money because of some sinister cult or something illegal. The point I was trying to make is WHO THE HELL CARES WHAT A COACH MAKES!!!!!!! I'm not paying his salary. It's also nice to see that the parochial 7 has been increased by 1. We need the numbers.

The only reason that I know or even care what McDaniels made was that I lived in Warren for part of the time that he was coaching there. I asked a couple of board members what he did besides coach football to earn $90,000, and no one seemed to know. If the money had been coming from a booster club, I wouldn't have cared, but it was coming from a school district which was struggling financially at the time. I am a public school guy, but once we get a few rounds into the playoffs, I root for the Mahoning Valley. There have been times that I have a rooted against Ursuline or Mooney in the early rounds, but I always root for the local teams once we get to state.

Let's limit our discussion to football. Of all sports, football's the one that least depends on having a stable of studs enter your school as freshmen. Especially at the lower levels. A couple of stars can make a difference, but most private schools don't have just a couple of stars. What they have is 11 guys who have prepared themselves, mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally to compete, doing what they're supposed to do every play, as a team, with attitude. Honestly, how many teams lose because the coaches have chosen their "stars" before the season even starts, play favorites, discourage a lot of potential players, give indicators to the team that certain players are better than others, belittle those who they don't like, allow politics (parents) to interfere, rely on pure physical ability rather than teamwork, etc., etc.

Coldwater, Steubenville and Kenton all beat my Alter Knights in the last several years, because they all had a few offensive stars who were taller and/or better than the Alter guys who were playing against them, but also because they had confidence, poise, teamwork, discipline and preparation. But Alter also beat those teams, not because of Alter's stars, but because of Alter's confidence, poise, teamwork,
etc. These teams all were from similar sized schools, and all have won state championships recently. Why would you choose Alter to boost to a higher level? For that matter, why would you boost the others to a higher level?

Your reasons are all specious. Basically, you don't like private schools. It's really that simple. You like that the publics divide the state up and give everyone a full scholarship. Then you argue until you're blue that somehow anybody who doesn't play by those rules is getting an advantage, despite charging families $8,000 a year per kid or more, despite inferior facilities, despite compensation packages for teachers, administrators and coaches that are often 40 to 50 percent below what the public schools pay. In addition, public high schools take way more kids from private grade schools than private high schools take from public grade schools every year, and that's just fine with you. But have one or two or even ten kids go from public grade schools to private high schools and play sports, and you scream bloody murder. And if they get any financial aid - even if they still pay thousands and even though at the public school they get a free ride - and you cry foul. When we say we've had enough of your crap, you start yelling about all the "cheating".

There now, are you starting to see another side to the story? I didn't think so.

OHSAA rules prohibit booster clubs from paying coaches. Private schools get around this rule by enhancing the spouse. Also private schools are not required to open their books. Easy to hide. A lot more people care then you think or there would not have been a vote.

Alter's Ed Domsitz has never been married. Sorry, that's ridiculous. Some schools, public or private, get around the rule by hiring coaches to do other things, like "counseling".
