Orrville Red Rider Football 2011

Mike PlantActually, it's The Daily Record, not the Wooster Daily Record. I had Sat. night off after slogging through the mud at the Boardman regional x-country meet and listened to the game while watching the Buckeyes. I thought Aaron's depiction was pretty close to what I heard - a close game going into the fourth quarter before Orrville pulled away. His story was very balanced and gave plenty of credit to the winners. There wouldve been the same number of stories had Wooster won — one.
as for Lynch, well, maybe that explains why he finished last in the picks. -
Mike Plantand if RRN calls himself old based on his list of best all-time OHS players, then I am really
old -
THE4RINGZThe Daily Record printed by Wooster Republican Printing Company. Somehow W. is at fault again.
Look like you are off the hook this time OQB. -

Without thinking about it very much , Dru Robinson with over 2000 yards in a State Championship would somehow be in my top 10 and I always thought Tom Bolyard was the best I saw as a QB, runner, kicker, and punter.Red Rider Nation;952823 wrote:I think this is a good time of year to hear your opinion: Who is the best 10 players to ever put on that uniform that I never did? Im curious to hear your opinions. Here is my Top 10 of all time. I might be old but will only post the players I saw play. Here is mine:
#10 - Loren Burkey - Great defensive player. If im not mistaken he started all 4 years
#9 - Dan Stultz - yes a kicker. He was awesome. Didnt he set a record in a game for longest kick and then beat it later in same game?
#8 - Kyle Simmons - explosive and very smart. He could find an open receiver or tuck and run if needed
#7 - Clay Tipton - Not much else to say - his father was legendary and he came to play every game. I specifically remember a game his senior year in Struthers against Thornville Sheridan where he kicked some @ss
#6 - Tim Hiller - Loved his game. Big, mobile, strong QB and had a heck of an arm
#5 - Kyle Domer - never was a big guy but was a heck of a RB. Him and Goodard in backfield was a threat
#4 - Mason Monheim - Enough said. THis kid is a beast on both sides of the ball! A workhorse indeed!
#3 - Jason Haley- He hit people harder than I ever saw. He was all over the place!
#2 - Tom Bolyard - He took a beating and kept on ticking. He was a gamer! He was one of the first players I remember watching as a little one!
#1 - The late Jack Leeder - THis guy was an animal! If you needed a yard he got you 10. If you needed a first town he would get you a touchdown.
You must be getting old because if you remember watching Sheridan in Struthers your long distance vision was good because the Sheridan game was in Zanesville -

OK maybe you can help me then. Maybe it was a game against Struthers but I thought it was somewhere near the Youngstown area. The game got real chippy and Bill Rice and Clay Tipton were beasts. -
5knotsHey Mike, don't get too caught up over here.....we just like to complain about everything here...especially when we lose. haha. Fact is all the communities that the DR covers are extremely lucky to still have a local newspaper in this day and age. And truth is, if tsot would have won, it would have been a bigger deal. May have made national news!!! haha. That's OK with me.

Nice topic and should generate a lot of interest and arguments. haha. So hard to compare generations. For one thing, we all know that the older we get the better we were by those that remembered us! haha. I don't think you will ever come up with a consensus. And maybe that's because we have too many great football players. The modern day era players ( since play offs) have had the opportunity to showcase their talent against the best in the state which tends to maybe give more substance to their talents. Tyrone Barnett played for Woody...has to count for something. Chase Hoobler held the record for most tackles in school history until a few games ago. That HAS to count for something when you think of the great defensive players over the years. James Bradley, Renauld Ray, Marcell Denson, Jared Zwick, Thad Tillison, Brent Steiner, Damian Vaughn, Wow that is just off the top of my head. What we have blessed with on the football field is truly amazing.Red Rider Nation;952823 wrote:I think this is a good time of year to hear your opinion: Who is the best 10 players to ever put on that uniform that I never did? I think you are referring to the Struthers playoff game in round 1 of the 87 season. Mo's last season as head coach. We got thumped and there was a bench clearing brawl! I was a ball boy that game and I will never forget how big and nasty those boys seemed to me at that age. In the 86 season we played St. Clairisville and Thornville Sheridan.Red Rider Nation;953007 wrote:OK maybe you can help me then. The only game we played over by Youngstown was in 87 at Struthers against Struthers and lost 21-0. That's probably the game that you remember.Red Rider Nation;953007 wrote:OK maybe you can help me then. Maybe it was a game against Struthers but I thought it was somewhere near the Youngstown area. Hard to argue with any of those names. One guy though sticks out in my mind frrom these names. Can someone please get a hold of one particular person that 5knots named and get him straight? I think most of you know who I am talking about. He is very bitter about Orrville and thats a shame. Thats the only reason he didnt make my top 10. Otherwise he clearly was Top 10 material. Seriously can someone reach out to this guy and get him back to where he was so great at least with the attitude? -

In the last 40 years of Orrville football...THAT'S the top 10 right there. I'd make it a top-11 and squeeze Mason Monheim in there too.Old Rider;953039 wrote:I think you are referring to the Struthers playoff game in round 1 of the 87 season. Mo's last season as head coach. 5knotsOne of our HOF inductees this year had a funny story about coach Tipton and that Struthers game. He said he was standing near Mo when the other team came a charging across the field. He looked at Mo for a little guidance as to how he wanted his players to react. As the story goes, Mo just wiggled his fingers as only he could do.... took a couple steps backwards...and looked at his stud LB and said...."go get 'em boys". hahaha. That is a story for the ages!

5knotsHiller and Brenner were fine football players and became better college athletes and even better citizens and representatives of Orrville football. In that category they would be in my top ten. They were fun to watch for sure....we never thought we were out of game. But success was limited as a team during their years. Wooster and playoff wins were nil. does that factor into creating a list? Just a question...nobody go off on me now. I'd take either one as a son. Nobody is probably more disappointed than those 2 on Woo and playoff losses.

That was a good story and I know there are plenty more just like that. I remember watching that game on VHS for years after that.5knots;953100 wrote:One of our HOF inductees this year had a funny story about coach Tipton and that Struthers game. Unfortunately that same year the basketball team finished their season with a bench clearing brawl against Marlington at the Canton Fieldhouse...seemed like the Riders that year did not accept losing very well! LOL -
