I saw the article date.....the same articles were being written last year, too...thus my comment. -

Hopefully our starting kicker is back on duty for the game this week. Our backup kicker did a knockout job Friday night IMO though regardless.thePITman;559088 wrote:Something I was thinking about... Clear Fork's kickoff return team was not that good, IMO, especially the person who was fielding kicks, who would always have to take a step or two back when catching the ball and having absolutely no momentum when beginning to return the kick. If Genoa kicks deep to Turner & company every time like they did against Clear Fork (angled left, to the 5-10 yard line), I'm sure Orrville will be much better receiving kickoffs and may have more success in the return game than Clear Fork did. -
OQB^Yeah I forgot how Genoa was about 4 deep at every position pretty good for a DIV school!
(note that was just a joke, don't take it as offensive)
As for the candle thing, I'm great it works for you guys. The Rider faithful just think it's a little weird and would rather talk with the lights on so people can see our swag
Let's move on from that topic please!
I really wish we did what Ashland did with their kickoff returns.....have the 4 guys bunched up and as the kicker is approaching the ball spread out into your spot (and change spots each kickoff) so you can't kick away from a certain player. -
OQBAvon Lake has a really nice facility....WOW that is impressive!

Classyposter58 answered the question. Need to lose the Cl from your screen name then title would fit perfect. -
RedRider1BRF,
I studied your route...sounds nice. I think that's the way I'm going.
Here's a map version of BRF's directions.

Go RidersWhat is the best time to leave orrville
-
Go RidersCal preps takes Genoa by 6.
-
RedRider1GoRiders,
If you assume 90 minutes for travel and another 10-15 for traffic (rush hour, stop lights, parking bottleneck, etc). I'd say leave Orrville around 5pm, earlier if you pregame somewhere. You could leave as late as 5:30pm and be fine. Eat at the stadium. Save time & money.
About CalPreps...I'm sure the common opponent (Clear Fork) had a lot to do with that. But Genoa has beaten 2 very good teams in the past 2 weeks.
All the variables (common opponents, schedule strength, etc) wont matter much.....it'll be who plays better on that night. -
OQBI'm going BRF's route as well...and probably leave at 5 maybe a little earlier to go eat.
-
RedRider1BRF,
Are there places to eat after you get off the turnpike? Asking me to drive 90 minutes and NOT stop for food would be like asking Genoa to play more than 1 division 3 opponent per year. -
Con_AlmaThere are plenty of places to eat if you get off at the route 57 exit.
If you get off at route 10 and head over to route 83 your going to have slim pickin's unless you drive into Avon or Avon Lake. -

Yeah...because there are so many schools bigger than DIV within 50 miles of Genoa :rolleyes:RedRider1;559212 wrote:BRF,

Have you ever been up here RR1? There's a whole lot of nuthin as far as you can see.
School enrollment isn't getting any higher up in these parts either. -
OQBHey the comets are going 10-0 and making long runs into the playoffs every year....sure it would be nice to have a tough schedule, but its working for you guys.

What about Sandusky...they're D2...and beat Clear Fork by 17.
Sylvania Northview....they were 3-7.
If you're going to beat bad teams...might as well do it against teams that are going to give you more points. -
clickclickboom^^ Orrville method? beat bad higher division teams... ok now lets hear how they all made the playoffs

I completely agree with you it's just the problem is that there are very few oppurtunities for scheduling to allow for such a thing.RedRider1;559331 wrote:What about Sandusky...they're D2...and beat Clear Fork by 17.

If it was easy to make happen I'm sure it would but when you are a DIV school that is playing well I don't see many higher division schools that would be willing to take a chance as a non league game because they have nothing to gain from it really. -
riders1Next year's Northern Buckeye Conf. won't help out either, replacing DV Gibsonburg 0-10 from the SLL and adding DIV's Fostoria 0-10 and Rossford 0-10 to the NBC, and I would assume DVI Upper Scioto won't be one of the nonleague games and keeping Oak Harbor and Port Clinton are good for a playoff team schedule. Hopefully Fostoria can rebound and get better.

Genoa:
Played zero playoff teams in regular season, three that finished with a winning record - opponents had a combined record of 40-60.
Orrville:
Played FOUR playoff teams, six that finished with a winning record - opponents had a combined record of 59-41.
Let's not have this conversation about who picks on the sisters of the poor and who plays a schedule that prepares them for the playoffs.
But hey...both teams are 2-0 in the playoffs and both have earned the right to be called regional finalists. -

GenoaCometThis whole strength of Genoa's schedule/weak league thing is always entertaining.
Four years ago we were getting our butts handed to us most every Friday night, but baseball, golf and other sports were doing just fine in a fairly well balanced SLL. Four or five years ago SLL football was pretty well balanced too with 3 or 4 teams in the hunt each year. About the same time that Genoa got their new football coaches, Otsego and Elmwood lost theirs (and non-league Oak Harbor) and took a dramatic turn for the worse - leading to the weak schedule we've had the last few years. GTownComet has it exactly right - there are not a lot of D2 and D3 teams AVAILABLE to schedule around here for non-league schedule slots - and to make a dramatic league change based on just 3 or 4 years record in ONE sport seems rather silly. Sure, we might possibly be competitive in the NLL with their D2 and D3 teams right now- but what about 4 years from now? What about all the other sports that would get burdened with a MUCH tougher schedule? These things run in a cycle, and fortunately (or unfortunately) Genoa is at a peak in football at a time when most of the other league schools are in a rut. Looking forward, it seems that the other (former) SLL schools are showing improvement, Oak Harbor and Port Clinton looked much improved this year. Fostoria and Rossford were both playoff caliber teams a couple years ago. I have no doubt that Druesbeck will turn around Rossford in short order, and I can't imagine Fostoria not rebounding quickly. Would a tougher schedule have been nice these last few years? Absolutely! But you play with the hand you're dealt.
My personal opinion - the lack of any kind of close game in the 2009 season played a huge role in the loss to Orville last year. The boys got themselves into a very deep hole early to a very tough team and had to learn how to dig themselves out for the first time in the season in a game with everything on the line. This year they should be better prepared after the tight games with Oak Harbor, Eastwood, OG and CF. -
