Week 13: Genoa (12-0) vs. Orrville (9-3)

We do have a few teams on our schedule that play the spread. None of them have the athletes like you do. If we can get to your QB we will be okay. I am not 100% sold on our secondary.

We kept CF at bay until we had a couple breakdowns on a screen and a play action that went big. that was also the first time we saw the wing T or whatever you call it. It is assignment football and until you see it it is difficult not to get caught up running back and forth trying to find the ball...kind of like raquet ball if you ever play with someone who knows what they are doing...I am the guy running to every corner! I digress. the biggest advantage for us this year facing Genoa is that we had CF in week 9. We've seen it (the offense) and it is fresh in our memory..believe me it is fresh! Doesn't mean Genoa cannot have success against us I just think it is an advantage for our team to have that CF game under our belt. Just like it was an advantage to have Ashland(Fuller) and Triway(Carmichael) under our belt facing EC.

On the flip side, has anyone really tried to spread Genoa out this year? I don't know. Maybe Comet guys could fill us in. When we spread you out it is with Truner (4.41) , Brenner (6'3,6'4" with a 33 inch vertical), Pirman 6'5 (4.51 speed), Monheim our LB/RB and we sometimes keep Simpson in the backfield or split him as well. that may be hard to simulate in practice just like it was hard for our scout team to simulate CF. thoughts?

We have seen the spread but NOTHING like we are going to see Friday... If you can keep your Soph. QB from being rattled we will be in a nail biter but I will be shocked if he doesn't have someone pressuring him almost every throw.

5knots, I was not predicting anything, I was just saying that the two teams themselves are very similar in what we have and do.

Genoa is going to give our run defense a big test Friday no doubt about that.

Just a faster typer...it is all good

    5knots-
We have been 10-0 the past 3 years because 80% of the teams we face try to run the spread.......but they don't have the personnel to be doing it.
    How's that?
You gotta have the personnel for the spread to do it effectively IMO

I don't see this a game of two halves like last year (Orrville 1st half Genoa 2nd half). I see this more like a chess match with Chinese Checker thrown in. It will be close the entire game. The team that can not turn the ball over or give up yards on stupid penalties wins the game.

I wouldn't consider our QB a sophomore anymore...same goes for your running back.

We are in week 3 of the postseason and both teams playing really good football right now. Maybe this is the week we see the old Orrville spread offense (when I played). Throw the ball 40 times a game and see what happens. I hope we don't do that because we have a really good running game, something we didn't have back then. We are better when we are balanced and keeping the defense guessing what we are going to do.

The chess match between coaches is going to be interesting.

Both teams have kickers who have made big field goals this year as well.

Two great coaches facing off. They know how to face diversity...Not like John Boles when I played.

    Good point!

Any word on Genoa's kicker...I know he was bang up a little.

Agree...When you make it to the post season especially week 13...you are battle tested...

Absolutely, and you should have seen just about everything (defensively and offensively)

Did some stat pecking on Kyle Lichti today....by my numbers he had 8 INT's after his first 4 starts. He only has 12 for the season, meaning over his last 7 games, he's only thrown 4 picks.

His decision making has really progressed nicely.

And turnovers as a team have gone way down. We stood at 16 through 5 games, but only had 7 over the final 5 regular season games. I know Tre fumbled once in week 11...but have we turned the ball over other than that?

You walk in that school you can feel it in the air, you can see it in the students eyes and you can view it in the trophy cases.... and yes you can even smell it down by the locker rooms...

Tradition starts somewhere...... Orrvilles started many moon ago.. Genoas seems to have started 3ish years ago. I hope your community sees that and can keep it pumping.........

When I was a wee lad of 7-8 I knew I was a Rider. It was something that was very strong across the elementary schools. even though we weren't on the field or on the courts or mats... we knew without question we were RED RIDERS........

Has the Comet pride filtered into your K-8 grades?
Football has always had a great tradition and following at Genoa at all levels. Our peewee and middle school programs always have a good number of kids and usually finish with very good records. Genoa has had very good HS teams in the past, but were never quite able to break into the region top 4 for a play-off spot. The mid 90s to mid-00's were (with a few exceptions) kind of a lost decade with a lot of turn-over in coaches - something that can effectively clobber just about any program.

When it comes down to it, these two football programs, schools, and communities probably have a lot more in common re. sportsmanship, pride, work ethic, etc. than we are usually willing to admit.

(Wow - who ever would have thought a year ago we'd actually be having a civil discussion between Comets and Red Riders?)

Kyle has improved so much from the first half of the year. All we need him to do is manage the game, and make about 15 passes. He has really taken that role on and being very efficient.
