Round 1: Triway Titans 8-2 @ Orrville Red Riders 7-3

  • thePITman
    Yes, Elyria Catholic won 28-21.

Congratulations to Orrville on the big win! Three huge plays by Turner... that kid can play. Great game Riders, and great game Titans! Would have loved to have Kearney who got knocked out and taunted on the 2nd offensive play of the game, but those things happen. Orrville made some huge plays, and we still had our chances.

Great season Titans! Nothing to be ashamed of.

Good luck to Orrville the rest of the way!

Well techincally he did do his talking "on the field" :D

but absolutely keep your mouth shut and play the game! We looked like a certain team we played last year in the playoffs with all those penalties.....

Triway has improved and exploited our weakness in the d- back field. I'm not sure why we can't come up with someone for that spot. I know we've tried multiple people. Why not Kyle Zook. He has the speed. He's a linebacker, but by now he could have learned that position.
  • OQB
Pitman...Triway gave a valiant effort tonight! Kudos goes to them for giving us all we could handle!

Think I heard Orrville had 105 yards in penalties. These personal fouls are ridiculous. Pirman made an impact and Monheim showed why he's the OCC Defensive POY. Great game for Stu. Will be interesting to see the stats, but I didn't think Orrville played extremely well. A lot of big plays but no real sustained drives. Triway showed us how to keep making short passes.

about a 350-290 adv in yardage for Orrville
  • Flash
I have to say I was disappointed in the refs. On Turner's return of the punt we had one illegal block and one out right grab of someones jersey. On one play Triway had 2 guys in motion and no call. On the play that Turner and Polen fought for the ball in the 4th Q. neither of them caught it because it hit the ground before they did, but no one was in position to see it.

Couldn't tell what his injury was or if they actually took him to the hospital. Did you hear anything and is he OK?
  • OQB
Yeah I agree flash...Officiating was not very good tonight!

I was sitting there thinking of my sophomore year against St. Vincent St. Mary and the officials we had for that game....

No Excuses though...shut up and play the game!
  • BRF
Now that my fingers have thawed out, I would like to say congrats to the Titans for their valiant effort tonight and WTG Riders for hanging in there and getting the job done. Pitman, I was almost right when I told you we would win by 1!

    Some thoughts:

In the first half, I think we don't go for two and just kick it. That's too early to do that. We have got to stop having our QB throw on the run. One play in particular stands out to me on that. In the second half, he was on the run full tilt towards the line of scrimmage and could have easily run for the 5 we needed, but instead heaved the ball, incomplete. The personal fouls have GOT TO STOP. Some of them were real momentum killers. And could we please kick the ball on kick-offs? That is absurd. Might as well just lay it on the ground and drill line shots. I'm sick and tired of having the opponents start at mid-field or better. At the end, trying to kill the clock........perhaps the QB could take the snap from under center and hand off to Monheim to pound that yardage we need? Shot gun and pitch outs don't really cut it for me when you are trying to put the game away.

Hats off to the Defense, especially at the end of the game when I was worried they might be out of gas. They sucked up and continued to harass up front and cover in the backfield decently. Great game by Turner. Spectacular punt return for the TD (edit - in spite of the missed penalties!).

The 3rd Quarter seemed to take forever! Heard on the game wrap up that Carmichael launched 46 passes.

That was the most poorly attended play-off game that I have ever been to. Plenty of seats. I don't get it.

I think that we might be playing at Ashland next week.
  • OQB
Couldn't of said it better myself BRF.

Orrville and fair weather fans go hand in hand! I don't get it either!

Mason needs to be lined up at rb with a lead blocker, he is unstoppable!
  • Flash
BRF, I agree about attendance. When I was a kid, everyone from 7th grade on up was at the game. We have no grade school and Middle school attendance. The seniors and Juniors come out, but the student section is empty. My suggestion is let them in free. I'm sure its against league policy to discount the tickets and I'm sure its against Ohsaa policy, but even during the season we've had poor attendance. I guess it easier to stay home and play computer games. I also agree on the QB not knowing when to run and not. The same play your talking about where he threw it hopelessly out of bounds , he had daylight between him and the first down. He had a similar situation in the 4th with 5 yds to a first down when we threw to Lemon in the endzone. He had a blocker in front of him and daylight. Being a soph. is an excuse, but he's almost a junior. Time to take charge and lead by example.
  • OQB
Go on a walk to the restrooms.....you will see the little runs running around all over!

Why have Davis and rice been absent on the offense?
  • OQB
Kyle is at that point in his career where he should know when to run/pass it. his throws are either dead on or not even close....he just needs to be consistent and manage the offense and take.care of the ball.
  • OQB
I wish max would play a little more offense....he just needs to be out there in the critical times in a game...he was 2/2 when thrown to tonight.
  • Flash
OQB I think Lemon's return has taken away from Rice. Can't understand about Davis. The kid wants to make contact seriously. I play him as much as possible and give him chances to do that. Tre is not here next year- Davis is. Ball possession downs- Monheim and Davis , then Davis and Monheim.
  • OQB
Exactly, at the end of the game monheim and Davis should of been in there....considering Tre fumbled there at a critical time in the game!

Is lemon better than pirman though....
  • THE4RINGZ
They were giving Kearny a sideline concussion test. He never left the sidelines and returned in street clothes in the second half.

Haha. We ended up having about 6-7 Triway fans tailgating, and RedRider1 even joined us for some chatter for a good while. Burgers and hot dogs were good!

(2)If Triway dont lose Kearney....He just might of been the difference in the ballgame!!!!

(3)Congrats Orrville...move on out and keep representing
    (1) Agreed about Turner. He's a stud! More bubble screens like you did with Sam Miller are in order, I think. Just get the ball in his hands. Period!
    (2) Losing Kearney was HUGE! He was the #3 WR on our team, IMO, and the most improved player in our receiving corp this year, also IMO. He would have helped us stretch the field. His replacement was our #6 WR on the depth chart, basically. But that is part of the game.
    (3) Agreed. Good luck, Orrville! I'm now a Manchester Panther and an Orrville Red Rider. No. I'm never an Orrville Red Rider, but I'll root for you! ;)

Thanks to you and all the Orrville fans for the kind comments. I hope you now see why I was optimistic going into this game. I knew what our team was capable of, and we played close to that tonight. Neither played great, but the game itself WAS great. Congrats to Orrville, as well!
    1_beast;546500 wrote:about a 350-290 adv in yardage for Orrville
    Here are my numbers:
Orrville - 372 total yards of offense (253 passing, 119 rushing)
Triway - 248 total yards of offense (211 passing, 37 rushing)

The refs were definitely inconsistent tonight for both sides. It was interesting, though, having OHSAA members who were grading the officials, and they sat right next to us in the press box. Haha! Very interesting commentary that one normally doesn't get to hear. It was pretty neat. Orrville finished with 7 penalties for 95 yards. Triway had 7 penalties for 45 yards.
4QuarterPounders;546503 wrote:Couldn't tell what his injury was or if they actually took him to the hospital. Did you hear anything and is he OK?
I am awaiting a response to see if he is OK. He was down for a while and looked to be in bad pain but hopped up a minute later. I'll update everyone when I hear something. My guess is it was a concussion, and we know the new rule this year that if someone has a concussion, they're out for the rest of the game. No questions asked.
BRF;546518 wrote:The 3rd Quarter seemed to take forever! Heard on the game wrap up that Carmichael launched 46 passes.
Here was Carmichael's line: 18 completions, 46 attempts, 211 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT (he only went 5-for-15, 32 yds, 1 TD in the first half)
OrrvilleQB;546528 wrote:Mason needs to be lined up at rb with a lead blocker, he is unstoppable!

Agreed! Monheim was tough to stop when he had the ball in his hands. If you have short yardage, give it to him. He won't get tackled behind the line, that's for sure. He finished with 6 carries for 20 yards (runs of 2, 5, 2, 5, 5, 1). But he's one of those guys that if you give him more carries, he could carry a team... and you have two guys that can do that! (Simpson had 28 rushes for 120 yards and 1 TD)

All in all, it was a fun game to watch, but I'm sad to see our team's season end. We had a great season when many fans, including me, had mediocre expectations for our Triway Titan team. But this group of seniors and their supporting cast along with all our coaches showed the true heart they have and will always be winners (I think they probably went down as the winningest class in our school history, but just a guess.) Keep your head up, Titans! We can have a pretty nice team next year, too!

Good luck, Orrville! Represent the area well. You were 2 of our 3 losses. Keep winning!

    Congrats Orville!!!

I did see coach snoddy tonight with a smile on his face :)
  • RedRider1
Great game...but so disjointed. Turner was the difference. How many games has he singlehandedly won for us this year? 2 or 3 anyway. Get him the ball more.

His 2 TD catches went for 144 yards and his 70 yd punt return put him over 200 all-purpose yards on just his 3 TD touches. One of the all-time great Orrville playoff performances.

Our last three playoff games have been decided by a total of 4 points.

Triway just never got that one big pass play to swing the momentum. Too many drops on their end.
  • OQB
It was nice seeing all you guys tonight at the game...sorry I didn't get to talk to you pitman.

Turner is just on a different level! Wow, I am so happy he is just a junior!

SOUNDS LIKE A VERY GOOD GAME WITH THE UPDATES I WAS GETTING
  • Flash
Pitman is class. As Rider fans we've given him some sh**, but he's taken the upper path. A good evaluation of the game and Triway's improvement. As Riders we don't want to lose to the purple, but the tone of our rivalry should be respect for the opponent. I think that has been fostered in our basketball rivalry, where after every game we pray as a group. Can you really hate someone after you've prayed with them? We don't want to lose to Triway, but respect your opponent and fear none.
