Orrville Football - 2010

Here's the OCC stats page connection http://occsports.org/football/footballstats.html
And yes he his averaging less per carry than the top rushers in the OCC.

And surprisingly Lichti is 3rd in the OCC in Passing percentage, so just show a little patience in the offense. If I remember when Zwick was a freshman, he looked terrible in the playoff games and the rushing game pulled us through to the finals when he came through with some big passes.

Good points about the QB. I wonder if the picks weren't so many picks for tds if we would be as concerned? Probably not. I agree with Matt and Mason....what they bring that is a bit different than Tre is more of a punishing runner. Mason is 210+ with with a head of steam and a lead blocker like Matt it can punish a defense even if it is only 4 yards. They are all equally fast...in fact Mason and Matt maybe faster straight ahead. You mix it up with a backfield like that and then Tre hits the hole with mason leading and it is a completely different look for a defense. I am excited for tomorrow I think Kyle is going to continue the maturation process and show some more improvement. Let's hope the D can stop a quite strong running game.
  • RedRider1
I should hope that all facets of our offense show improvement.

West Holmes is AVERAGING giving up 50 points a game in their 4 losses.

This should not be a close game.

Early and often. I'd even consider resting Tre this week. He can't have a 60 yard game against Ashland. Need him as close to 100% as possible.
  • 5knots
^ from what I have seen at practice there is plan to change anything as far as resting goes.
  • RedRider1
    I'm sure not....just saying I'd consider it.

I really hope to see some intermediate passing this week.

Coach D talked a lot about last week being "on him." So I hope to see quite a different team. That "coaching & playcalling" drumbeat is going to get louder if not.

Can't believe it's week 6! Wow. Must be all the nice weather making the season sprint along. Looks like another Friday of dry weather. I'm sure it will catch us sooner or later. Aint it great to be the Head Coach of the Riders. You're 4-1 and sitting at 2nd in your Region and we are all clamoring about how bad things are. Haha. I just love Orrville sports. Never satisfied. I think that's what makes us tough.
  • OQB
Exactly 5knots, from the outside people are jealous of us and wish they were 4-1 and 2nd in the region, but not us!! haha, We can always find something that needs improvement and we are never satisfied.
  • BRF
I agree with you, 5knots, and even you, too, O-villeQB08! ;-). (And the reason I type it that way is because I like to! But if you don't like it, just let me know!)
  • riders1
You guys are just jealous because we don't score 50 points a game and play our jv's and freshmen in the second quarter :)

Ok enough cheerleading on this thread. The thread seems to be getting a bit stagnate so lets fire it up again. I picked this quote to raise questions. Drews throwing ability may be "a lot worse" but I believe that his scrambling would make up for that. Kyle has had several times where he clearly should have tucked and run instead of forcing a pass. I don't think that evaluating a QB should be only an arm question. Leadership, running ability and being able to improvise in tough situations are just as important. Can Drew do that better I don't know but I do believe that if he had to scramble for a play and pick up a first down or more he is the better fit. On Kyles defense I do think he had a big run in the Triway win. I would like to see him do more of that if the pass is not there. As far as punting goes Drew has my support he has had a few bad punts but has also had some great ones and a couple of those high punts got very good bounces. I think that Ashland, Clear Fork and Wooster will load the box and say beat us with that QB. If the picks don't end and if Kyle doesn't tuck and run some we are in for some real nail biters.
  • OQB
Everyone forgets that Drew WAS the QB of his class from Jr high to freshman year. There is a reason why he isn't back there, and I would rather have an athletic 6'3" reciever than a 6'3" QB that can't throw the ball well, especially in our offense we go from able to throw the ball ok to not at all. Drew is in the right spot and is a good reciever for us!!
  • Go Riders
I was at those Jr. High and freshman games. I don't remember him totally stinking. I agree there is a reason why he is not QB but I'm not sold that it is because he was that bad throwing. Maybe it is because he is great at receiver. Whatever the reason the big issue is stopping the picks. If Kyle is injured then what? Just putting out controversial questions. Beats reading constant cheerleading.
  • BRF
Thank you for saying that and I am glad that someone saw my point. I would want one of my best athletes touching the ball on every offensive play. However, I accept the decision made and we will roll with it.
  • OQB
Even if Kyle did go down, I think I would rather have Turner back there, even more athletic and could run option. Stewart gets what 3 touches a game if that on offense, that type of playmaker needs to have more touches, maybe give Tre 20 carries, and let Turner have 10 or 12 touches....just an idea. I believe Drew had trouble reading defenses and having to know everything as the QB, he struggled with that.
  • Go Riders
Ok, I agree that Turner getting more touches would be good and agree on 15 to 18 touches for Tre. Turner at Qb ? maybe, maybe Mason? It seems that we put the ball in the hands of a person that needs time to become a play maker (KYLE) and then expect him to get it to a developed play maker(Max,Tre,Mason,Drew,Turner,Rice,Davis). Kyle will become that play maker the question is "will it happen this year?" The kid clearly is the future QB(next 2 yrs.) I just want to make sure we don't shoot ourselves in the foot trying to get to the playoffs. I mean for the record we are not in the playoffs yet. 3 of the 5 next games will be Copley level challanges. Ashland, Clear Fork and Wooster are no push overs.
  • OQB
Yes I agree with you there, absolutely!! But just think, we shoud've won (we did win) verse Copley and we played like crap!! on both sides of the ball. That tells me that we will be in every game we play, but that game when we don't turn the ball over and we capitalize on our opportunities and if the defense keeps playing outstanding football, we can be really dangerous!!! But until then, if we keep playing like we have against those tough teams ahead, were looking at another 6-4 season.
  • OQB
If we play like we are capable, we end the season 9-1. If we continue playing like we have been the best we go is 7-3, and worst is 6-4. Coach Davault will and always has the boys ready to play, but he is not on the field playing it ultimately comes down the the boys executing the gameplan that the coaches make.

I would encourage any of you that are able to attend practices....especially in the summer. Coach D encourages it so don't feel like you are in the way. Many of your questions would be answered. Unless you watch what is going on in practice which is where a coach can evaluate a kid you would probably agree more with personnel decisions. Turner is a great athlete....a running back he has not shown as of yet to be. In space look out! in traffic, breaking tackles not so much yet....doesn't mean he is not capable..needs to get stronger. I love Drew. he is that kind of kid who wants to win and will try to find a way. He is not a QB......that's not saying he could not get the job done on pure desire and heart but he is way more valuable at wide out with his height, vertical and long arms. From a wildcat...yeah, I could see that. The interception problem is real, like I said earlier I wonder if we would be as upset if their were not so many for tds? The progression is there. He is a very smart kid and needs our support. I can tell you this...he has the support of the players, they encourage him throughout the game and pick him up when he heeds that..........that is very important. Beat West Holmes! Very tough running game, not good defense, should be interesting.
  • OQB
Thank you for clearing my point up a little bit. Drew is our number 1 receiver, but has been non-existent since that Triway game. We need to get him te ball on slant patterns and let him use his size to break tackles. Kyle will be fine guys trust me he is up to his head in responsibility, but is handling himself in a very mature way. He will get the int's fixed.

The frustration from a fan standpoint is that coming into the year the expectations were mixed....and then they see a team come together with some great players all over the field and think, wow, we have a pretty good team, so now expectations are very high. That's great. That's Orrville. We knew coming in this year the QB spot was the question. He has a great first game vs Triway.....which by the way is the only DIV team we have played....and the expectations shoot thru the roof because that early pre season question has been answered. Triway is no slouch..they have walked thru their other games and are 7th in our region. We have a very tough schedule....it will pay off...we get ourselves to the DIV playoffs, which is the goal, I think we will be better football team. I think we play a few rounds until we find a team any better than those that we have played already. Tonight we need to take a step forward offensively, then we can be at ease a little.
  • Go Riders
Ok different subject but still stirring the controversy pot. Do we have to go to a practice to see wether or not Matt D. has the running talent to deserve a lead block from somebody when they let him run the ball? Does Mason only deserve to run with a lead block 30 - 40% of the time? In my opinion when Tre is at tail and we run the H with no lead block that is a play off for Tre without forcing him to run off the field.

Excellent quote. The question on the opposite side of that is..."can wooster and clear fork stop our weapons?" Ashland always brings a strong D...thats why right now, we're the underdogs (but that how we like it) in that game.

Some of Kyle's picks have been on tipped passes...but just as many have been on poor decisions. Live to play another down....tuck it and run or throw it away.

There's a serious mental edge over Wooster and Clear Fork.....CF has never beat us (if it was going to happen, it would have happened at their place last year). They had all the weapons and a dominant ground game (just like this year)....but we still found a way to win....and then did it convincingly 2 weeks later at our place.

Woo game will be a great atmosphere. Here's to both being 8-1 heading in to that one.

5knots, good point...only in Orrville could the team be #2 in the region and 4-1 and we complain. Good thing we don't live in Doylestown.

I think it's pretty obvious from in-game action that he has the ability. Give him a lead block or 2 and he could be a real good back. Just don't see the harm in giving Tre no more than 20 touches tonight....then Mason and Matt a combined 20. Maybe it motivates Tre to put up some big numbers and not being content with 4.6 yds per carry.

Some of limited carries to Mason is a result of Coaches caution on a little hip thing going on. Long range plan for this team is to extend to week 12 and beyond....long way to go. Has meant Tre is carrying the burden for now...doesn't always mean that. We have 3-4 guys on this team if we have them go down out team changes dramatically. No sense writing who that is...we all know. Keeping them healthy and on the field right now is the focus. can't argue with that I guess....even if the kid says give me the ball...kids are a little more short sighted. Let's just get this win and we start talking about the challenge Ashland will pose.
  • OQB
Why does Tre not get a little precaution from the coaches, every week the kid is limping around why not limit his carries too?
