  You can always contend with a great QB. You can still survive key injuries and inconsistency if your QB is always on top of everything.
  
  Building a team around an elite D and depth takes time. The Bengals are doing it right now, but even then, that plan can be derailed by injuries at any time.
  
  It's much easier said than done to build either. Finding an elite, elite QB is difficult, but building a dominant and deep defense takes more than a year. It has to be an organizational change from the ground up. The Browns have messed up so many draft picks in the last 5 years outside of not finding an elite QB.

  You've already proven to be incorrect this, as many posters have pointed out. Can't judge Shelton pick 3 games into his rookie season, even a dipshit like yourself should know that.
  
  Shelton has been inconsistent, I've seen flashed he needs to become more consistent.

  Shelton's MO in college was to beat up on bad teams and disappear when it counted most.
  
  In the NFL even the "bad teams" have good players, so his disappearing the first 3 games and having exactly zero impact on the run game is entirely consistent with his career up to this point.
  
  He would have been there when we picked at 18. No one was lusting after him like the Browns were, which given our track record of 1st round picks under Ray Farmer explains why it should be no surprise he is failing.

  The Seahawks nearly went back to back Superbowls with a top running game and bottom half of the league passing game.
  
  That was the last 2 years.

  But yet you still don't understand that about half of the SBs won over the last 10-15 years have been won by run/defense teams, and half by elite QB/throwing teams.

  Subjective analysis. And 15 years ago is irrelevant. The Patriots won with an okay defense, no RB, and a top tier passing game. This year, the dominant teams again seem to have an okay defense, no RB, and a top tier passing game. What does this year have to do with the Ravens defense of 15 years ago?

  I heard some of Pettine's press conference and the dude is full blown delusional at this point.
  
  His empty emotionless flatliner bullshit has run it's course. If he can't ever bring himself to get worked up over poor play the players sure as hell won't either.
  
  He blames everyone but himself and his best friend O'Neil for why the defense sucks, and it is old at this point.
  
  O'Neil should have been replaced after last year, and he is even worse this year. I know he is Pettine's boy and all, but putting your job and career on the line for a guy that is most definitely in over his head is pure idiocy.
  
  The big take away from today is Pettine might be the most stubborn coach we have ever had in the history of this city, and nothing is going to change as long as he is employed no matter how bad things get.

  The he only thing subjective is that you keep ignoring facts to suit you or opinion.
  
  Regardless if you are talking 15 years, 10 years, whatever about half of the recent SB winners were based on run/defense with a serviceable QB while the other half were elite QBs.

  I have been a huge Pettine supporter. But after today and the press conference, he has me scratching my head like are you really that fucking dumb and arrogant? When JFF fumbled he has to protect it better. McCown fumbles and he says well oline needs to do better. He has an agenda against JFF. And I'm not one to usually think like this

  I am beginning to think Pettine doesn't understand how to stop the run.
  
  His year in Buffalo they were 28th, year after he left they were 18th, and Rex has them at #2 now.
  
  Cleveland was 18th in Rush defense before Pettine got here, and were then 32 last year and 32 this year.
  
  Things get worse when he arrives, and better when he leaves.
  
  He might just be in way over his head.

  I just look at this team and SMH. How could we have squandered soooo any draft picks?...and how do the people responsible still have jobs. Obviously, everybody misses occasionally, but to miss so many takes real ineptitude.
